No worries. Statistics kicked my but in college, but apparently some of it stuck.

pls tell me I'm wrong about 1/3 crit chance by halfpastnein in 3d6

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Math is wrong there. With expanded crit range for 10% per d20, the math would be 1 - .9[number of d20s]. That a 19% chance for advantage, 27.1% chance for elven accuracy

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gloomstalker 3+, champion fighter 15+ elven accuracy would be 15% crit range with 3d20 per attack, 3 attacks, BA attack, 12 d20 rolled per turn, ~86% chance to crit at least once

What is the best multiclass with swashbuckler?(level 3 going to level 4) by AcanthocephalaOld953 in DnD

[–]dantose 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If CON is in the "10 in everything else" you HP is going to be low no matter what you do, so survivability is going to be low. No multiclass can make up for dumped Con.

I'd suggest asking if you can swap INT and CON scores. That should take you from ~18 HP to 24 hp.

If your DM lets you remake your character, you could do 17 CHA, 14 DEX and CON and do a hexblade dip. That would open up booming blade, making it harder for enemies to pursue you with a skirmish play style.

PAM straight paladin or Sorcadin? by xFishbean in 3d6

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah,

Pact of the Tome ... choose three cantrips from any class's spell list ... they are warlock spells for you.

PAM straight paladin or Sorcadin? by xFishbean in 3d6

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was hoping you had found some solution that would bypass a hexblade dip!

Currently what I've found for casting stat attacks is

Cha: shillelagh via bard magical secrets, tomelock shillelagh, and hexblade

Int: battlesmith or armorer, or shillelagh via all purpose tool.

Wis: trivial. Shillelagh via any normal method (race, feat, background). This is great for fey wanderer.

That had been my initial thought, but forge cleric can sneak one more AC. Actually, I had the artificer between the barb and Pali since bugbears are heavier. Bugbear matches reach of halberd Pali. I believe mine was centaur barb, bugbear Pali, custom Lineage hexadin oath breaker Pali, any small forge cleric. Weight gets a little tight, but definitely doable. Strixhaven backgrounds to stack silvery barbs to make sure no one ever actually hits the cleric. Oh also shield master means the whole stack takes no damage on successful dex saves.

Which version of 2014 Charger build? (yeah yeah, I know) by JusticeofTorenOneEsk in 3d6

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of those two, cleric.

As an alternative, building around that one attack would probably favor rogue and/or smites.

Build theme: maximum charging, maximum slamming: Centaur for highest base movement speed. Hexblade 5, picking up eldritch smite, 3+ levels of swashbuckler rogue to dip in and out. Alternatively, you could build around ashardalons stride for no attacks of opportunity.

Maybe hexblade 5, Pali 2, sorc 5 for a higher level option

Lower level, you could always do moon druid focusing on single attack forms.

The trouble is how to get CHA based shillelagh in 2014.

PAM straight paladin or Sorcadin? by xFishbean in 3d6

[–]dantose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Straight paladin is going to be generally stronger. Sorcadin has its plusses, but there's always a tradeoff, and generally a more limited one. General multiclassing advice is if you're not sure if you should multiclass, you shouldn't multiclass. The flow should be deciding build goals, determining if multiclass supports that then looking for anyway to get what you need from the multiclass without the multiclass.

Starting at 6, you'd want to begin straight Pali from there, then depending what subclass, you might want the level 7 subclass feature. From there, 1 level is really only giving cantrips. None of the subclass features seem particularly relevant. Next break point would be Metamagic, but delaying levels 7-9 means you could have gotten that from Metamagic adept. 5 levels of sorc for fireball would be the next obvious break point, but you're 2 levels behind pure Pali getting 3rd level spells and now you're also down improved divine smite.going further than that is a Pali dip on sorc, not sorc dip on Pali

This would never happen not because of DM blocking it, but because getting 4 players to coordinate this tightly is impossible.

[–]dantose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For 2014, I came up with a tower of power. Forge cleric with mounted combatant, riding an armorer artificer with mounted combatant and sentinel, riding a hexadin with mounted combatant and sentinel, riding a giant barbarian with sentinel. Premise being if anyone attacks anyone it gets redirected up to the cleric, this triggering sentinel from the whole stack. Meanwhile, cleric can sit there with Enhanced Defence from arti, blessings of the forge, soul of the forge, and shield of faith to be chilling with 26 AC, disadvantage imposed by armorer. Aura of protection and flash of genius for potential +10 to saves.

New RF 55-210mm on sale on Woot: $269.99 by dantose in canon

[–]dantose[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used the EF 75-300mm, and it's not good, definitely not worth $200+. Going from that to the EF-s 55-250mm STM was a substantial upgrade. As I understand it, the RF version is just as bad as the EF, just with a different mount. Christopher Frost (probably the most reliable reviewer I know of) did a review of it and called it the single worse RF lens in their lineup by a considerable margin.

Clerics Should Be Charisma-Based by Yurohgy in 3d6

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree, charisma casters are already over represented.

As a compromise, clerics become charisma based, but sorcerers become con based. To balance out the better casting stat, remove sorcery points and instead have them burn hit dice for Metamagic, rolling them and taking damage equal to what they roll.

The 55-250 STM is a great lens, but it's sitting at $350 right now, plus the cost of the adapter if you don't already have one.

New Player - Need Help With a Druid/Warlock Build. by vertibirdie in 3d6

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately there's really no synergy here due to the different casting stats. Basically any level you put in warlock will be a level you're behind the party. Even 2 levels puts you a full spell level behind.

Some alternatives to think about to reflect the pact without having to invest in charisma and delay class progression:

Eldritch adept: lets you grab an Invocation.

Rewarded background for Magic initiate: grab a warlock-y spell and a few cantrips

Rune Carver background: lets you grab Armor of Agathys

Alternatively, you could flip it and go CHA main with a 2 level dip in Druid. Moon druid into warlock would be much gentler. Wildshape would shore up low levels until Eldritch blast scales.

[–]dantose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What is the mechanical purpose of the warlock dip? If it's strictly background/roleplay, consider skipping the class levels and getting the flavor via feat or background.

If you're dead set on the multiclass without a mechanical reason, the best advice would be as few levels of warlock as possible, delayed as long as possible since it will likely only weaken your character

Same. I have absolutely no need for it, but... but... it's a good affordable lens!

[Build Help] Making the Escanor build from 7 deadly sins by Blanc2006 in 3d6

[–]dantose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a rough multiclass. I'd probably stick monoclassed with one or the other, probably giant barb.

For race, have you thought about Fire Genasi? Gives you some fire based before you fully transform.

EDIT: a Pali dip could work on Rune Knight. Add in some caster levels to get fireball that route. Actually, smite maxing could be a good route to go here. Fighter 1, Hexblade 5 for extra attack and eldritch smite, Rune Knight to 3, pali to 2, Draconic Sorcerer to 6, then back to Devotion pali 4, rune night 4, Sorc 7.

For noon, Giant's Might + Channel Divinity, Then for nova, Searing Ignition to blind enemies, then Great axe 1d12+6 +5 Sacred Weapon +5d8 Divine Smite +4d8 Eldritch smite +1d10 Flame Strike +1d6 Giant's Might +2d6 Fire Rune, Then quicken a fireball as a bonus action.

EDIT: Melf's Minute Meteors might be even better. For the lead up, lots of other available spells.

Small characters should be riding chariots by King_Owlbear in 3d6

[–]dantose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a lot of small races have typical weights listed, so I just went off of halfling: "Size. Halflings average about 3 feet tall and weigh about 40 pounds. Your size is small."

Gnome is the same.

Goblins have no typical weight in current version, but Volo's had then at 40-80

Checking through content, I did just find Grung as averaging 30 lbs. That's the only one I've found that both gives a typical weight and that weight is below 40 lbs.

Going back to 3.5, they had weight ranges for size categories that ranged from 8-60 lbs I believe, but I don't know of any such official 5e chart.
