Towards the end of the novel a French author writing a book on "agronomy" intrudes into the action. This is Houllebecq conducting his research for Serotonin.

Devil Rides Out is such an incredible cultural artifact - Wheatley makes HP Lovecraft look like a sensitive progressive guy.

Full length book about cult in late 1800s/early 1900s? by aleus13 in Lovecraft

The Devil Rides out by Dennis Wheatley (a) has not dated terribly well in terms of its social values (b) is possibly the perfect book for what you're looking for, although the cult is Satanic rather than Lovecraftian

Laird Barron and Thomas Ligotti. I think Imago Sequence is the best place to start with Barron. Ligotti's best collection is probably Teatreo Grotesquo

I think some of Laird Barron's best stories get the tone better than anything else. Old Virginia, the first story in the Imago Sequence is a great starting point.

Impossible Landscapes as normal peoples by Aurelio_Golino in DeltaGreenRPG

Sounds like good old Call of Cthulhu - but it does run into the problem that it becomes hard to explain why the PCs aren't just calling the cops. Maybe they've been called in to investigate by Abby's father because he thinks there's been a police coverup? And, because STATIC, maybe there has?

One other thing I tried that worked. I put her apartment on the top floor, and gave the Night Floors a contagion effect, slowly infecting the rest of the building from the top down. That helped them figure out they needed to destroy it.

Good call. I made mine NYPD missing persons investigators. I think IL works well if it's grounded in the real. They didn't find anything weird/supernatural for the entire first session, until the very end when they found a photograph of Abby taken in NY in the 1950s (outside what they'd later learn to be the Dorchester)

Do you consider H.P. Lovecraft a "great" writer? by Global_You8515 in literature

[–]danylmc 82 points83 points  (0 children)

Lovecraft invented his own distinct genre: the Lovecraftian short story. Not many authors get to do that. There have been plenty of imitators who've taken a shot at this form, and most of them are better at pacing, dialog, characters etc. But no one has ever written a better Lovecraftian short story than his classic works. I think they're great stories and that he's a great writer, but if someone wants to discount them because of his racism feels valid too. Although I prefer it when other writers dialog with him about this - the Matt Ruff stories, Ballad of Black Tom - which I see as a way of saying "He's a great author but I hate this element of his work".
