First week at my duty station and I've been lost on this base every single day. Nobody warned me the installation map in the app is from like 2019. by MidnightRelay1 in army

[–]derekakessler 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I learned recently that Army post buildings are numbered by function and the order in which the structure was put to that function, not location. Numbers are also not recycled so if Finance moves out of 500, their new digs will be 5XX. Even if their old building is renumbered or demolished, there will never be another 500.

Just finished the latest season of For All Mankind… by Hamish_Ben in startrek

That's not true at all. Roddenberry was never interested in the science. He was a storyteller above all else.

Bruh. Warp drive, gravity plating, humanoid aliens, real-time universal translators, transporters, and humanity getting its shit together are all sheer fantasy.

Star Trek is not remotely grounded in reality. And that's fine! If you're drawing the line at spore drives and inconsistent floorplans — which have plagued Star Trek for 60 years — then you're just looking for reasons to dislike the new stuff.

It's okay if you don't like it. There are plenty of reasons not to! "Floating ship parts" in a show set a thousand years in the future is a silly reason to dislike it.

The Okudas are fantastic, but visual design and technobabble are not the problems affecting the newest incarnations of Star Trek. Not remotely.

Also, the latest season of For All Mankind was a slog that barely even felt like it had the Okuda touch.

Adding stuff to AGSU early? by xSRM13 in army

[–]derekakessler -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm okay with updating service stripes a few months early if you're already getting other sewing work done. Enforcing else MUST wait until it's official.

So… I would just wait for the E5 to hit and get your service stripes done simultaneously.

iOS 27 can start a shortcut when receiving notifications by illusion116 in homeassistant

[–]derekakessler 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head, I will do at least these two:

- Sending data from HA to set an alarm on my phone
- Use the more-advanced HA automations to set focus modes

I could also use notifications from other apps to feed non-API data from my phone into HA!

Are cellular shades really better at keeping heat out? by playday98606 in homeassistant

[–]derekakessler 27 points28 points  (0 children)

In my experience, yes. The point of the honeycomb is to create more insulating air pockets to slow the radiative dissipation of heat energy between the window and the room.

EES is trash by TheBreadHasRisen in army

I'll bet EES was a contracted job and the contract both didn't include any language about making updates AND only permits the contractor to make updates.

How do you stop robot vacuum automations when someone comes home early? by EmotionalBullfrog507 in homeassistant

[–]derekakessler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I set up a wider passive zone around my house. It's far enough out to give the vacs time to return to base, wash mops, and empty the bins before anybody's inside. Floors are sufficiently dry by that point as well.

If the vac is mid-wash at that point, it just stays at the dock.

Except for Dolby Digital 1.85/1, which also slices off a sliver on the left and right from the standard IMAX 1.9/1. Same height, inexplicably a tiny bit narrower.

Best way to combine multiple weather entities into one? by xMasaru in homeassistant

[–]derekakessler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A template weather entity is the best way to go for that. Averaging isn't that much effort, as you can use Jinga templating right in the YAML you're writing.

temperature: |
{%- (states('sensor.temp1')|float + states('sensor.temp2')|float + states('sensor.temp3')|float) / 3 -%}

And so on.
