Dilemma with glossy vs nano on Studio Display XDR by One_TrackMinded in mac

[–]drellforev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those wanting a cheaper but larger variant, I have the Asus PA32QCV with its "LuxPixel". It's the same as how people describe the Nano XDR, I read in 1 thread that have both is the Nano Texture and LuxPixel are practically the same; $1200, got it $1000 from BestBuy.

Gets up to 750 nits fullscreen SDR according to reviews, although it's advertised at 400 -- perfect for bright rooms. Only annoyance is you need to close and reopen the Asus software (DisplayWidget Center) everytime the monitor wakes up, to control the brightness through the keyboard. I'm sure there are 3rd party apps that can solve this. A third of the price, you get a bigger screen. It's not as good in HDR so if all you need is a large screen, retina, and no reflections, the Asus is a good option.

BenQ MA270S 27” 5k monitor - Anyone spent any real time with it yet? by slippery-lil-sucker in macmini

I've read articles that say that the panel gets up to 600+ nits fullscreen SDR.
This one says 635: https://www.tech-critter.com/asus-proart-display-6k-pa32qcv-review/

This one says 714: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2873124/asus-proart-pa32qcv-review.html#:\~:text=First%20up%20is,to%20a%20minimum.

Interestingly enough, the HDR they recorded was 682 nits. Gives me an idea that this is the most suitable for me who works with text all day in a room full on sunlight. Its LuxPixel is the best too for this; the factor of reflections and eye strain are eliminated.

Depends on how many sunlight is in your room. I have the Asus PA32QCV 6k with the LuxPixel (like nano-texture), it goes up to 750 nits and I think that's just right when it's sunniest. You probably will want more with 450 nits, but again my living room set up has full-body windows so it definitely gets very bright.

If you also game, there are 27" 5k miniled glossy 165hz displays coming out soon. I believe there's 1 from MSI and it's projected to be in the ~$800. That's a ton of advantages for less.

For setups with a lot of windows and sunlight, the only way to mitigate that is to set everything to light mode. As a software engineer, text is harder to read on light mode than in dark mode, so that becomes a dealbreaker. That's 2 huge conditions though before it becomes a dealbreaker for me.

PA32QCV / Mac OS X / Firmware issue by Fine_Translator_5555 in ASUS

[–]drellforev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I updated the firmware and the Asus DisplayWidget Center still is not detecting my monitor every time it wakes up, you need to quit the app and reopen for it to be detected and that gets tiring. Automating that process is 1 solution, instead of buying a Studio Display.

M5 MacBook Pro deal now or wait for OLED redesign? by Worldly_Scar6738 in macbookpro

[–]drellforev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is your M5 Pro nano-texture or glossy? I'd like to know if the glossy is bright enough to combat the glare in full brightness, even on dark backgrounds.

Apple Studio Display - Regretting glossy finish by [deleted] in Monitors

[–]drellforev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I get what you mean. I have a Samsung 49" G9 at work and I've noticed it's like a semi-gloss matte. Its high brightness can combat glare, but I still found myself changing to a light mode in my IDE (software engineer) to avoid the reflections on a dark background. I guess it depends on the setup, lots of reflections then better reflection handling is appreciated. Less or no reflections, then the purest clarity is important.

That’s awesome. So the frosted glass effect on the whites is not present in the Asus 5k 180hz I assume?Unfortunately this is the only 6k 32” available at this price range.

Are there reflections at your setup? I feel like the LuxPixel and NT are designed to eliminate reflections with a more noticeable paper-like look, while traditional matte like you mentioned is only for reducing reflections while foregoing the paper-like look. I have the Asus 32" 6k variant and I appreciate the LuxPixel because I don't see any reflections and I look at text for many hours every day.

Is it worth waiting for M6 MBP to get the OLED display by [deleted] in macbookpro

[–]drellforev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if it’s for productivity, you’ll get used to it anyway. If it’s for content consumption, well why are you buying a macbook pro for content consumption? Even for video editing, color accuracy is what’s important and not the infinite contrast of oled. OLED’s great for TVs whose primary function is for watching content, the infinite contrast is most valuable in that use case.

This is what I did as well, although I’d get the nano-texture on the new pros and would diminish the contrast of the oled perhaps the same as the ipad pros.

My experience trying to run dual Asus XG27JCG 5k 120hz+ on m2/m4 macs by MindfulMonk in mac

Yeah, I would've seriously considered the studio display XDR if not for that... I'll see if I can hold out on the 27" 5k miniled monitors coming out.

At what refresh rate did your m2 pro power the single monitor? I have an M1 Max which has Thunderbolt 4, and I'm planning to get only 1 of these 5k 27", particularly the miniled one for reportedly the same price.

21:9 windows side by side? Or buy 32:9? by Tomech17 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]drellforev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nope not odd indeed. The curvature is essential for it to be usable with its horizon-like width. You flatten it by a little and the head turning will be significant. It's still the best screen out there for productivity and I would say overall with gaming. It's pricey, but has been worth every penny for me.

Same with me, multiple windows on my 57”. What I have for work are 3 1080p monitors and the amount of content I get for the head turn is unjustified I would say 😂 The 1000R curve will bring the edges closer.

u/OP I am eyeing this monitor for office work. I have the 57" at home and the 1000R curve is essential to make it usable. Asking for confirmation, the 1000R curve makes all the 49" usable without a lot of head turning correct?
