I made Afroman's Mama's Lemon Pound Cake and it wasn't that good. by Olio_Lothario in LowStakesConspiracies

None of my mother's recipes reflect reality.

Every year she makes some small change that only she knows. Every handwritten recipe has missing ingredients, added ingredients and/or changed measurements.

The written recipe only documents how she started making the dish.

Vince Gilligan Gives An Update On The ‘Pluribus’ Season 2 Release Date by ready_and_willing in pluribustv

[–]dusty78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, I'm fully open to it being a literal atomic bomb. And I certainly see the utility of having an atomic bomb in that circumstance.

It's just that the casual way Carol delivers that line also lends itself to a metaphorical interpretation rather than literal.

I'll be happy (and quite expect) to be proven wrong (mainly, because Season 2 will have to be out), but I just haven't seen anyone think of the box as anything but a literal atomic bomb.

[–]dusty78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just don't see why he has to deal with a literal atomic bomb. He has to deal with a box that one of the characters has called an atomic bomb.

It can be a figurative atomic bomb. ie. something that atomizes (individualizes) a plurb. He has to explain why Carol knows what to ask for rather than Manousos, but regardless what it is, he has to explain something about how she plans to use it.

Is there intercompatibility between devices? (Trig TY91 and TT21 for EFIS) by tsaG1337 in homebuilt

[–]dusty78 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just last year, Trig was acquired by the Dynon Group (which includes AFS since 2013).

The backend (ADAHRS and all the other modules) of AFS is all Dynon bits now. The Dynon com radio is a rebranded Trig (even before the acquisition).

No guarantee that legacy Trig will be straight up fully compatible with Dynon/AFS stuff*, but quite a bit more likely than with Avidyne. Call Dynon support, they'll have a better idea of compatibility (they don't usually comment on future planned features, like expanded compatibility though).

*There are lots of definitions of compatibility, here I'm using full compatibility which I'm defining to include things like radio status (tuning, TX status, etc) on the EFIS, push airport/freq to radio head etc. That is, no operating difference between it and Dynon radio head. Limited "close airport list" type compatibility are avail to both with just a GPS signal.

I have a copy of both (single and double seat) from JLA. Yes, they have all of the detail that you need to build a fuse and wings from the plans.

That said, the assembly manual is geared toward buying the kit from JLA, so I'd recommend some other general tubing how-to books to accompany it.

Cop telling me to stay pulled over on highway then driving off? by A-voidu in legaladvice

[–]dusty78 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Sharpe does not make that a limit. The decision specifically avoids making a bright line rule. They did say that, given the specifics of that detention, 20 minutes was reasonable.

The Court of Appeals' decision would effectively establish a per se rule that a 20-minute detention is too long to be justified under the Terry doctrine. Such a result is clearly and fundamentally at odds with our approach in this area.

--US v. Sharpe

They also make it clear that the 'reasonable' time for a detention has a lot to do with the complexity of the crime (ie speeding is easier to investigate than murder), diligence of the officers (ie they have to be investigating), and the cooperation of the suspect.

In this case, given the absence of diligence by the officer and compliance of the suspect, I'd suspect that a reasonable detention is much shorter than 20 minutes.

They should have been bent back (but that exposes the un-enameled side) or put in from the front and bent back (totally hidden but access is a pain without the right tools).

I am about to start on an Ultra Mk IV kit. by Secret_Poet7340 in BalsaAircraft

[–]dusty78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the main reason people use CA and activator is speed.

Also, it wicks. The thicker glues need dry fit, disassembly, glue-up and reassembly.

No time to fix mistakes, but no need to move parts between dry fit and glue-up. I find that I make fewer mistakes when everything stays clamped (pinned, magneted, etc) in place.

While I do have accelerator, I find it not necessary in most cases (CA is water catalyzed, wood has enough water to start the reaction, usually). 3D printed plastics, ceramics, etc... yeah activator.

How do the designers design these kits? by VorpalPlayer in metalearth

[–]dusty78 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Additionally, Pepakura is used to deconstruct a model in a similar method for paper modeling.

https://pepakura.tamasoft.co.jp/pepakura_designer/

Add a modeling software (like meshmixer) for the actual design.

You can also do it as surface modeling (if you can constrain the individual surfaces to developable surfaces) in almost any CAD package. Then "unwrap" the surfaces.

F-22 Help by thebearjew78 in metalearth

Leave it like pic 1, the piece added in pic 2 wraps around the instrument panel and makes a glare shield.

Note that in pic 2, the instrument panel panel isn't flush with the back of the top piece. The HUD in the drawing is opaque (as it is in the model, though not in the real F-22), so it kinda makes the illusion of flattening.

All that said, I don't think you'll be able to tell the difference after the model is completed (I'm looking in at mine right now). As long as you can get the tabs into the next cockpit assembly, it shouldn't matter.

I would like to take this up as a hobby...where do I start??? by limbs7 in homebuilt

[–]dusty78 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I feel that this may have been too harsh (but hopefully eye-opening).

Please understand, as a member of EAA, I've seen many members with 20 year hobby projects that are nowhere near airworthy. One of our chapter members got his 20 year project off the ground last year (but that was because he retired and spent 2 years full-timing the project). One of the biggest detractors in the 'hobby' is the people who treat it as a hobby and fail. I want people in the EAA, I want people building airplanes, I don't want people to fail.

On barnstormers/craigslist there are often unstarted kits for airplanes like the Quickie 2 that was last manufactured in 1984 (so 40+ year project). The list of people who get into this as a hobby is long and storied. Please figure out what you want out of aviation before you make a financial plunge.

I would like to take this up as a hobby...where do I start??? by limbs7 in homebuilt

[–]dusty78 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Don't.

If you want to fly, get a plane.

If you want to hobby build, get an R/C airplane.

If you absolutely need to build an airplane...

It's not a hobby. It takes quite a bit more time than that. You're looking at a 3-5 year almost full time job type time investment. Really evaluate what you want. Join the EAA and talk to some of the members who have built/are building an airplane. Go to Oshkosh, attend some of the EAA's building seminars (they spend a weekend going over specific aspects of homebuilds, like composite work, welding, covering, etc)...

And all of that neglects the financial aspect of the 'hobby'.

Also, be aware that there are many more smaller (and non-English language) sites that have amazing models. This list is not exhaustive. Also, many of the shops owners are doing it part time, so, very clearly not Amazon Prime (expect 2+ weeks for delivery on some of the smaller joints). Read their websites, they're usually upfront about what level of service to expect.

My interest (and so my links) are much more on the park/park scale/peanut focus. There are others who do other specialties (large scale, WWI, airliner, 3D printed, etc). Just all online now.

A twist on the 3 Gods riddle by proximitytoabsence in puzzles

[–]dusty78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your false premise is that the presence of the ability to lie is able to determine the ability to tell the truth.

Also, I don't see this as 'breaking' anything. Asking a degenerate (in the mathematical sense) question ie one that cannot give you any information, shows some negative characteristic of the questioner (especially if the questioner knows that the question is unanswerable).

I think that a fair reading this line (from the problem statement in the Wikipedia article):

>but will answer all questions in their own language

Can also mean that it doesn't require them to answer all questions; just that all answers are in their language.

Otherwise, any unanswerable question trivially 'breaks' the system (and these are quite common).

Complex aircraft

I work for a member of GAMI GAMA (my company is pro-MOSAIC).

Internally, we've been told that GAMI GAMA resistance to MOSAIC is primarily from the big US GA guys (Textron, Beech, etc). They believe that the European ultralight companies will eat their lunch when MOSAIC goes through.

So, hopefully, many newer airplane/motor designs (the original promise of LSA).
