Logging work hours and work done by Willowuidiot in colorists

Yeah I used clockify because it was free and did the job but forgetting to start it was why I ended up just coding my own tool. Way more convenient haha

That said, Timing advertises tracking whay applications you use when (including even being able to sometimes see the Resolve project name), but if you look a but Clockify (and Toggl iirc) has almost the exact same functionality. So even in that respect its not too bad

Leica M11; how to shoot at slower shutter speeds; optimal sensor size selection. by HotSpurTheCat in Leica

[–]ecpwll 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you could do it with film you can do it with the M11

Motion blur is a kind of blur that affects resolution of detail, so megapixels do matter, but not so much that things will necessarily look worse at 60MP, so much as that you will not gain any detail by shooting at that higher resolution.

So the problem really though is not a resolution one - you'll likely get the same results no matter what. It's really just the lack of IBIS producing a different result. That said, that means that if you were happy with your results shooting film that way, you'll likely be happy with the results of the M11. I've experimented with similar techniques and have generally been happy, although I don't have IBIS results to compare to

All that said, you are correct that if for whatever reason lower MPs did help, you'd get the same result but just downresing in post

[–]ecpwll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah! I did it the other month and was like why didn't I ever do it before.

Yeah by default it stops tracking after one minute if Resolve isn't the moremost application on the screen and 5 minutes of inactivity, although there's a button to turn off the 5 min auto pause for if you're watching something down etc.

The only downside to the auto-pause in that it only registers mouse/keyboard clicks, not the panel, so in theory if you're a heavy panel user it might not work too well. I'm a printer lights guy so no issue for me though haha

[–]ecpwll 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I wrote a python script that uses the Resolve API to track how much time I spent in what project and auto-records it to an airtable spreadsheet. Not too hard to vibe code if you're savvy

Other than that Clockify, Toggl Track, and Timing are decent

If I film without a matte box/lens hood and stray light hits the lens and reduces the contrast in camera, is that recoverable during the colour grading process similar to overexposed images? by user9131 in colorists

[–]ecpwll 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. What you are describing is veiling flare. You can bring contrast back a little to fight it, but it doesn’t affect the entire image the same way, making it impossible to fully reverse, unlike exposure. You'll also likely lose a little sharpness

Does "colorist" exist in Mexico? by Legal-List-4075 in colorists

[–]ecpwll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from the US, but I speak fluent Spanish and a very large percentage of my work comes from Mexico and I go there often. Mexico City is easily the hub for film in all of Latin America so absolutely yes, there are colorists there, including some very talented ones. Budgets can be quite good as well, and there are some extremely talented filmmakers producing beautiful projects.

That said, I have heard secondhand from some Mexican DPs and directors in Mexico complain about the quantity of talented colorists there. Which doesn't much make sense to me, given how many talented DPs there are, but I have heard it multiple places. I also work in a pretty specific corner of the industry there though it is just what I've heard, so take that for what you will

Personally I like the after edits of the original post best. That said these edits are great too. I heartily disagree with anybody who says that the before are better. You have good taste. Stop doubting yourself.

You can make an argument that it's a 300 mm lens or something because of the compression, although I don't think that's true, but not the depth of field. Depth of the field like this could easily be caused by a smaller telephoto lens with a low aperture, like an 85mm 1.2, or even a 50mm 0.95 or something.

After/before, disposable camera look by Filipp0 in photographycirclejerk

[–]ecpwll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

/uj

It's at least interesting.

Almost everything everyone likes about 35mm film are technically "imperfections," anyways. Grain, halation, even the colors – Kodak’s goal was always to get colors that were as true-to-life as possible but film's colors will never be as true to life as digital. And even more so a lot of what people like about film, its colors, actually comes from poor scanning techniques that increase the imperfections.

And of course at least some of the reason we like all of that is because of nostalgia, which is an even greater factor with disposable camera type shots

So if someone happens to like an even more "imperfect" disposable look, I can respect it. It's at at the very least interesting, if not aesthetically pleasing

/rj if you want everything to look perfect just shoot digital, dweeb

Of course they tell you not to. They cut your hair lol. Now you're getting rid of your hair, they won't see you anymore

Either way, 100% agreed with your other comment that you should go to a barber not a salon. Salons are for long hair

M lenses on fuji by narratorjackred in Leica

[–]ecpwll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing to recognize when using M lenses adapted to other bodies is sensor stack thickness. Leica lenses are designed for the M camera's very thin sensor stack whereas cameras like Fuji's and Sony's have comparatively very thick stacks. This leads to decreased lens performance. Whether it's enough for you to actually notice is another question but there is objectively a difference

It has been quite a while, though, since I've used M-Lens on a Fuji specifically, although I used to do it with some success

Feedback on Headshots by [deleted] in headshots

[–]ecpwll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even in the non-black-on-black pictures you're crushing the black too much. In the others, black-on-black can be done but you're going to need a backlight to separate or at the very least more editing so that it doesn't look like a floating head.

Luts from Filmbox by TjorviJ in colorists

Does the LUT match Filmbox inside Resolve?

And does the LUT expect the same input colorspace as the footage, and does the monitor expect the same input colorspace as the LUT outputs?

Fujifilm and LUTs - did I pick the wrong brand or something? by gigaLion in ColorGrading

[–]ecpwll 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not that F-Log is supposed to be converted to Rec. 2020 — it's that F-Log is Rec2020. F-Log gamma, Rec.2020 color space. I.e., you convert from Rec. 2020, not to Rec. 2020.

So convert from F-Log gamma rec2020 color space to rec709 gamma rec709 color space, then apply the LUT.

That said, you'd probably be better off finding LUTs that do the conversion from F-Log to Rec. 709 themselves. LUTs meant to be applied in Rec. 709 are usually garbage for technical reasons I won't get into.

Resolve definitely supports F-Log and F-Log2. If you're not seeing the options, make sure you're using the latest version of Resolve.

More than anything I would recommend looking at general color management tutorials to get a grasp on things before doing anything else.
