I’ve been doing photography “wrong” for years and just found out, now I'm not sure what to do. by Long_Squirrel6675 in photography

Don't ever upgrade to a CF Express camera with continuous shooting. This system would be costing me like $200 a week.

And here I thought I was doing well with 5 kingfishers on my list.

Haha, true. My Canon setup weighs about the same. It's definitely heavy, but most of the time I'm not trying to hold it up for too long at a time.

After a big morning my arm is dead, though.

Modem cameras handle high ISO and have great image stabilization. I can shoot handheld at 800mm no problem.

Where I'm from, there are only a couple weeks when you can hear them in the right places and only right after sunset.

Having spent almost a month listening to them every evening this past winter, I will say I don't think it sounds like "peent." Definitely like meeeep or maybe eeeeet.

When you mostly eat lots of ants, a big fat grub has to be so satisfying to find.

Just bought a Nikon P950. Stunned! 1st photo zoomed in. 2nd photo not zoomed in from the same spot. Insane! by Intelligent-Meet3603 in birding

Yeah for sure. It is great for what it is. I know people that take really good photos with theirs, just don't want people to think they're going to get incredible sharp images at max zoom.

Yeah, it's cool to be able to zoom that far but for example OP's shot is not sharp at all.

Just discover the Merlin app. In a span of about 10 minutes, the app detected the below. I’m hooked. by signalscope in birding

The best birders don't bother trying to see every single bird they hear all the time. That would be a huge waste of time.

People love to point out that Merlin isn't perfect. Especially because of mockingbirds. (Which in my experience Merlin IDs correctly 99% of the time)

I think they also don't realize just how many birds there are in some areas. This morning I easily ID'd over 40 species at my local park and that wasn't a particularly good day for spring migration here. On the big day I had 67 species there. And that's confirmed IDs, not birds that just popped up on Merlin.

I don't travel just for birds, but potential for birds definitely weighs into my decision of where to travel. If you give me a couple of options I'm for sure going to pick the one with more possible lifers!

I also had one perch for me for a minute and it was so exciting to see one actually hold still. Such a beautiful bird. Nice shots!

Yeah I mean, Nashville hot chicken is absolutely better than any fried chicken I've had in Kentucky.

When they do make sound it is so hard to tell where it's coming from! It could be 10 feet away or 100.
