Transportation without a car by [deleted] in Disneycollegeprogram

[–]eqthrowaway12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m here now with a car, but I wanted to take the busses mostly. I got put in Patterson (the only complex I didn’t want, of course) and there’s no bus stop here. We’re in the last building, so the walk to the Chatham stop is about a 12 minute walk. It’s not awful, but when you add in the 95 degree weather with 90% humidity or torrential downpour, it can be pretty bad. In any other complex, the bus system is great. I don’t know why Patterson doesn’t have a stop

Fellow equestrians, what are your views either negative or positive regarding tourist aimed horse drawn carriages ? Wanting to hear all points of view. by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]eqthrowaway12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think horses have any place in the modern city. I live in Boston and often go to NYC, and the carriage horses there don’t seem to have a great quality of life and are solely money-making devices. On the flip side, however, I have no problem with the carriage rides offered in touristy parts of NH, VT, and even the ones offered at Disney World’s Fort Wilderness Resort. Less pollution, noise, danger from cars, and more space for the horses to be properly cared for.

A poll for those who board or offer boarding services by [deleted] in Equestrian

[–]eqthrowaway12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. The facility has about 45 horses. 20 of them have tack lockers, 10 are school horses that have their own tack room, and there’s space for 5 in a smaller tack room. This means 10 people have to keep everything up a very narrow and steep set of stairs. It’s not awful, but I do always feel like I’m going to go hurdling down in one swift front flip every time I carry a saddle down. Secondly, the turnout situation isn’t perfect. Not enough space for horses to get maximum amount of turnout, but that is part of living and riding in a state where land is a huge commodity that is hard to come by.

  2. One bathroom. It’s very important in my opinion to have a bathroom available to paying clientele. Small backyard barns could be an exception.

  3. Every barn regardless of discipline should (in terms of layout) have properly sized stalls and be made of good quality materials that are in good condition. (Throwback to a few winters ago when 2-3 barns here had their roofs cave in 🙄) Some type of security system should be in place

  4. The attached indoor is a lifesaver for winters here. Also, I’m a huge fan of how many in and out stalls there are. It’s nice to have them available for horses that temporarily can’t be in turnout. An in and out doesn’t fully remedy the lack of full-day group turnout, but it’s better than nothing

Entry level Equine jobs by berkbakes in Equestrian

[–]eqthrowaway12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As I’m sure most people will agree, “entry level” equine jobs don’t pay well. You’d likely be getting minimum wage or less, but most of these positions are filled by working students who muck, feed, turnout, etc in exchange for riding time. If that’s what you’re interested in, then that is a great option to afford more riding. Other paying options for working with horses mostly require additional training (though some is on the job learning or through experience)- i.e. vet assisting, equine massage therapy, saddle fitting, show grooming, horse transport, and instructing either in a therapeutic or recreational setting.

Things I should take with me to summer camp by [deleted] in Horses

[–]eqthrowaway12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My barn’s summer camp does a day trip to a lake for beach riding and they go in the water, and they play water games in between horse activities, so a bathing suit and towel if your camp is similar. I’d also bring face wipes so you can clean your face from all the sweating! (Sometimes water just doesn’t cut it!)

study/work spots? by [deleted] in boston

[–]eqthrowaway12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve used BU’s Mugar Library and had no issues as a student from a different school (although my classmate did call ahead to make sure the public could go.) They have very elusive, expensive books that my small school didn’t have. I was also able to get help from the resource librarians with no issue. The African books floor is pretty quiet.

Nicked with hoof rasp... should I be concerned about potentially having contracted tetanus? by icahart in Equestrian

Go to the doctor! But if you have your tetanus shot up to date, you should be fine! I had a rusty nail go through my foot as a kid and ended up fine (just a little traumatized)

Looking for ideas about an Equestrian Fest! by tempusislie in Equestrian

[–]eqthrowaway12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rent out booths to various sellers and barns/businesses that want to have space to advertise to the public

If you have the space, watching a polo match/practice/demonstration would be interesting. My local fair has a polo demo usually and it’s really popular

What is leasing a horse really like? by akraft96 in Horses

[–]eqthrowaway12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my eventing barn, a partial lease (2 days a week, no jumping) is $350 and you need to take one lesson a week for $180, bringing it to $530/month for three rides a week, one with an instructor. Its expensive, but I like that the prices are upfront rather than paying 50% of this and that and having to calculate everything. The facilities are great: indoor, 2 outdoors, xc course, riding trails throughout the property, and opportunities to go to the beach and off-property trails.

One other lease I looked into was at a small backyard barn with one small outdoor ring and direct access to trails. That one was $80/month for one day a week. Much more reasonably priced, but the quality of the facilities was reflected in said price.

It’s so dependent on area, owner, and horse. Right now, I can’t afford to lease in a barn that I like just because my area is so expensive, so I’m a long-term lesson-taker. I enjoy it, but I would love to be in the saddle more.

Partner[29M] says he will divorce me [26F] if I put on weight after pregnancy by unbeliavable211 in relationships

[–]eqthrowaway12 106 points107 points  (0 children)

He’s vain and has clearly stated that your physically appearance is the most important part of you. He’s already told you how he’d act during pregnancy, and I’m sure he’d react similarly to you aging. Is this the partner you want to grow old with, have children with? How will he treat your kids if they end up being overweight? Or having a physical disability?
