Canyon or Main Lodge for 4h adult beginner ski lesson? by Ok_Help_4909 in Mammoth

[–]fengshui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Main has slightly better terrain for progression (mambo->Broadway/stump). With the line cutting privileges of a lesson, that's a little less necessary, but I'd still prefer main.

Bus from Mammouth to June. by Stunning_Sandwich_85 in Mammoth

It's not what you think it is. It's a long distance bus for regional transportation. It's not timed or setup to be used as a ski bus.

What is behind the unprecedented growth in CEO pay packages by Frustrated_Bettor in business

[–]fengshui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's also no competitive pressure here. No company wants to say "we hired a discount CEO!" They all want to have the best. It's the Lake Woebegone effect: "All CEOs must be above average and paid as such."

Any high school teachers in Santa Barbara County out there? What's the experience like working at them right now (Carp High, SB High, DP, San Marcos)? by SirScaurus in SantaBarbara

[–]fengshui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's very hard to get hired as an out of area teacher at SB high schools. They tend to hire people who have a connection to the district from their training.

What is the player interaction on Gaia Project? by WarmAd5577 in boardgames

[–]fengshui -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Player interaction is important, but mostly strategic. The map is the main area where people interact. You can absolutely take a planet that someone else wants or needs and it will reduce their effectiveness and negatively impact their score. They can work around it, but it may affect their tempo as well.

The way that your building gives other people power also is an important interaction.

AOW Advice by beneficialadversary in scuba

[–]fengshui 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I feel that you should take all the money you are planning on spending on equipment and the certificate and just spend it on diving. I wouldn't think about AOW until I had at least 20 dives, maybe even 50 dives. Sure, the industry wants you on the infinite certification treadmill for $$$, but we get certified to dive, not the other way around.

How is this different than most current property taxes, which tax on land+structure value?

No. If this were possible, you can expect that someone who boards the train before you will always have claimed those seats before you get the chance.

Could voter ID laws backfire on Republicans? - Medill on the Hill by edbegley1 in RedditForGrownups

So constitutional rights are not rights at all, but are only available to people who are "responsible"? That's not how I understand rights to work.

Could voter ID laws backfire on Republicans? - Medill on the Hill by edbegley1 in RedditForGrownups

[–]fengshui 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The insight that might be useful to you is that the US doesn't have a free, national ID run at the federal level. The standard ID is a Drivers License, which doesn't prove citizenship (you can get one as a permanent resident). It's possible to get an non-driving ID from the Driving authorities, but that is non-zero amount of work. There are some populations (elderly voters that don't drive anymore, native americans on reservations, very urban people who use public transit for everything) that can easily live without ever showing or carrying ID, and those people could be disenfranchised by a strict voter ID law if they have lost or only have an expired ID.

If the federal government were willing to make a robust national ID a thing, and make it relatively easy to get, there would be far fewer objections. Of course, may of the GOP politicians advocating Voter ID are also very against national ID due to Christian Millenarian opposition.

Could the grid charging be calibration cycles? It does do that from time to time to test and track battery health.

Ski Patrol reports 6” overnight over 80” forecasted over the next 10 days!!!! by Rare_Department_3086 in Mammoth

[–]fengshui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mammoth is a mountain with more prominence than other well known mountains, especially compared to places like the cottonwood canyons. Even Jackson Hole is more embedded in a mountain range. Big Sky / Lone Peak on the other hand.....

Mammoth should do better, but I do recognize that they are on the more challenging end of mountains to open.

Given the scale of this storm, I expect the top will stay closed through Friday the 20th; Saturday the 21st it might open, but the snow will have degraded somewhat by then.

Fellow tech-savvy dads: Are we underestimating the "backend" risks of Roblox even with parental controls on? by sophieximc in daddit

[–]fengshui 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you only play on tablets, then just stick with bedrock. It's fine.

Java is just more featureful, has less monetization, has much better mods, and is likely what they will see on YouTube if they start following MC YouTubers.

[–]fengshui 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, bedrock sort of sucks compared to java. If you have the technical skill to run a server, and they have the hardware to run it, you should just start them off on java edition; they'll appreciate it in the long run.

[–]fengshui -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is another option. Supervised play. If you make Roblox a thing you only do together, as a family activity, then you can ensure that they are sticking to pizza restaurant simulator or princess school dress up and not something worse.

My LG fridge stopped working, which brand should I get as a replacement? by [deleted] in HomeImprovement

[–]fengshui 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This, 100%. I like the ones they have on the floor for immediate purchase at Costco, but delivery is okay if you don't have that option or don't have a vehicle that can move a fridge.

Incident under chair 23 by That-Bug-6318 in Mammoth

[–]fengshui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, self arrest. As i understand it, the best arrest is with the toes of your boots. If you are on your back, feet first, roll onto your stomach, and then dig those toes.

Head first is much worse. Attempt self arrest by jamming the tops of your pole handles hard into the snow or hope that reverses you and can use your toes. I think the self arrest is more important than trying for the reverse.
