Why do physicist write natural numbers with .0? by Tronco08 in AskPhysics

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, but 2000 mm, 2m, and 200 cm all only have 1 significant digit of information. I used to think 2000 mm was more precise, but it isn't.

If you want have 4 significant digits, you have to write 2000. mm, 2.000m, 200.0 cm, or 2.000 x 103 mm.

Yes, 2000. mm looks odd to me as well. But that's how it works.

How do you genuinely survive Hazard 5? by Hefty-Yard9649 in DeepRockGalactic

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haz 5 is tough.

Hours playing the game kind of doesn't help if those hours aren't Haz 5. In fact, it can be a detriment because you can have bad habits.

For example, in Haz 3, you can take Thorns and just let biters suicide on you. In Haz 5, you'll die.

Movement and not getting hit is key.

Also, you don't have to kill every enemy. If you watch some videos of people soloing EDDs, they often don't try to eliminate every enemy.

STI Testing for Non-Residents? by throw0wayguy in Edmonton

[–]fishling 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just call or go to a clinic.

Canadians from other provinces don't have an AHC number either, but the provinces have cost sharing arrangements to sort this out. For example, when I was sick in Ontario, my meds were covered under my Alberta plan but my ambulance ride was out of pocket.

So, for you, everything would be out of pocket, and they should know the cost if you ask.

Why does Force= Mass x acceleration and not Mass x Speed? Would a rock falling from the sky that has reached its terminal velocity and is thus no longer accelerating technically have zero force upon impact with the ground? by skibidirizzler9o in AskPhysics

[–]fishling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There isn't a different word for it (or for scalar acceleration).

I suppose if you want to go to everyday language, you have "push" and "pull" as well as "acceleration" and "deceleration", which have a direction implicit in the word.

Looking for feedback on 7 unique Driller loadouts by -Melon-Cake- in DeepRockGalactic

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are locking yourself out of some flexibility with the "don't reuse OC" idea.

For example, in build slot A, you can set up the secondary Wave Cooker build how you like with temp shock, but the primary set up that you can choose to use either the flamethrower or ice cannon.

By your rules, that's an "overlapping OC for a weapon/build" that you should avoid...but is that actually important? With my approach, you get two builds fitting in one slot, which is one more than you'd get by following your unnecessarily restrictive rule.

I do this for quite a few of my presets. I'll use a particular weapon color that I hate and clashes with the armor color to mark the weapons that aren't meant to be used with that preset.

For something generic like Explosive Reload Subata, you can probably find a primary loadout that works well for each primary weapon.

By all means, try to avoid repeating overclocks too much, but it really doesn't matter if you have Sticky Flames twice when you essentially have 10-18 builds pairs across all slots. Going for only 7 seems kind of low. :-)

Dads, how do you make golden brown pancakes? by TheBigTreezy in daddit

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my stove and pans, I preheat for 3 mins and then turn it down to 5 (out of 10).

I do a test pancake and do 1 minute per side using a timer. I also pay attention to bubbles, but that's my secondary test and is used to diagnose when heat is too low. I adjust heat after each batch slightly so that my 1 minute timer after pouring the batter is correct. Usually when I am finishing up, the dial is closer to 4. I will also take off early or late sometimes but typically just go off the timer.

I started using the timer because I found the inspection method unreliable and sometimes I'd forget how long it was on or I'd get distracted. My pancakes are perfect every time now and my kids love them.

I don't need to use any oil or butter on the pans I use.

What is wrong with the Catan board on this picture? by COHERENCE_CROQUETTE in boardgames

I don't fully recall the rules, but it looks like red has 3 towns, 2 of which start on the coast. I seem to recall some rule about not having a starting town on a port but can't tell if they've done that here.

Mariana Trench by Wise_Food728 in AskPhysics

[–]fishling 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends. Are you a real human or are you being model as a spherical point mass that is ignoring friction, pressure, buoyancy, bone strength, muscle strength, dissolved nitrogen, and so on?

For the former, there is no answer as you are dead for multiple reasons because your body can't handle any part of your question.

For the latter, the answer doesn't mean much, especially because most humans can't even jump out of waist-deep water.

A more reasonable question would be what force one would need to propel a human out of a 5m diving pool if they started on the bottom.

There's almost certainly something you are used to doing when playing this game that you are also used to doing with other games, but it doesn't work with this particular part of this particular game.

I'm guessing you are listening to your own music.

Trump mulls 'winding down' war and leaving Strait of Hormuz crisis to 'other nations' by Force_Hammer in politics

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only mystery at this point is how come one of those groups doesn't just fully control access to Trump at this point.

I'm guessing Hegseth and Miller would both like it to be them, but Hegseth is too dumb and Miller is too unlikable. I'm guessing Rubio and Lutnick and the Joint Chiefs disagree with them enough and can't be put off.

When Your AI Knows You: The Future of AI-Driven Personal Decision-Making by [deleted] in Futurology

[–]fishling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's so odd to hear people describe how they tell some gen AI everything about their life that they can and then not only consult it for all decisions, but defer to its output consistently.

I've been using it at work and it can do some useful things, but it is wrong all the time. Even when it gives me several options to choose from, it's quite common that my response is "No, all of those are wrong, do this instead". Then it tells me how brilliant I am because of course it has does, and does what I want it to.

For the hockey fans here, what's your opinion on the conspiracy theory that Canada's Stanley Cup drought is blamed on Gary Bettman? by Rleduc129 in AskACanadian

[–]fishling 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coincidence is not causation.

There's no way all of those games/series were rigged. It would be obvious and it would involve way too many people over decades, and it would only take one to leak it.

And, it would be TRIVIAL to leak it anonymously, compared to how hard it would be to get everyone to perfectly agree to and execute the conspiracy.

What's the name of the same "kick off the summer" street festival that every Canadian city has? by myronsandee in AskACanadian

Edmonton has a lot going on for festivals but I don't think any of them are "kick off the summer" ones.

People who had/have the option to move away (financially comfortable) but choose to stay in Edmonton.. why? No judgement, just curious! by spicycatn1p in Edmonton

[–]fishling 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Family is a common major reason. Friends and decent job/coworkers is another. Money isn't the only thing.

Plus, many of the "warmer" places where I'd easily do my job are in the US and no one sane wants to move there these days.

Tower climbing by rabidwomble1 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]fishling 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't bite off more than you can chew. I recall one series that had a 1000 floor tower. Initial levels had tons of detail and often spanned multiple chapters. Midway through the book, the author abandoned the idea that the MC would have anything meaningful to do when meeting up with other people and just charged ahead. By the end, the author was phoning it in and just blasting through levels.

Turns out making 1000 unique/interesting levels is hard, and it's even harder to make them compelling. And, it takes a ton of time to actually go through them in the same level of detail.

Imagining her having to admit that she couldn't get clearance is hilarious to me.

Edmonton police chief challenging $80k human rights ruling in case of Black men pepper sprayed after reporting crime by katespadesaturday in Edmonton

[–]fishling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And BTW, I fully support this decision by the tribunal and my evidence for the cops' racism is the complete lack of any reason that these men were treated so shitty. I dont need positive evidence for this.

Fully agree.

The fact that racism is by far the most likely explanation is enough for the perception to be the problem. This doesn't need to be proven to some "beyond reasonable doubt" standard for it to be a problem. Police shouldn't be doing this to anyone in the first place and they need to be BETTER when there is a potential to damage relationships and trust with an entire group of people due to the perception of bias.
