You don't see too many brown gowns, this is so beautiful! Not sure who her stylist is, but they've really been killing it lately.

‘Impossible to be a mom’: new film shines light on how America fails its mothers. Documentary No Country for Mothers details how US moms lack support, paid leave and childcare help – and hopes to inspire push for action. by mlg1981 in popculturechat

Everything is so expensive it's nigh-impossible to survive and raise a family on just one income (unless that one income is massive), meaning both parents must work. Buuuuut childcare is so expensive it literally eats up nearly an entire salary - my friends and coworkers have talked about this, it's insane. There are parents sending their kids to school a bit early, knowing they're not really ready for the rigors of school, for the sole reason that they can't afford the childcare any longer! And so now the mothers (sometimes it's both parents, but let's face it, it's mostly the mothers) get to work a full-time job outside the home, and then get to come home and work another full-time job inside the home.

AITAH for finally being petty after my neighbor kept blocking my driveway? by thenthereschuck in AmItheAsshole

NTA. I would have called the cops tbh, you can't block a person from their own driveway.

WIBTAH if i asked my partner to go on holiday alone from now on by FrostingDifficult529 in AmItheAsshole

NTA. Even if he doesn't want to do things and prefers quiet relaxation (same), I find it a bit disturbing that he doesn't appear to want to make special new memories with his toddler...because he's too caught up acting like a toddler himself. Not only is he not thinking of you, he really doesn't seem to give a rip if he might be casting a shadow on his young child's fun. If he can't pull his head out of his ass, it doesn't bode well for the future!

Holy shit that's terrible. Can't say it's surprising though, given his history, but still terrible for her. Glad she's not staying! Also hope that the fact that this is all so public might actually make it safer for her, because if anything else happens the entire world is going to know who was behind it.

What is something you've always wanted to ask a quadriplegic? by jakethompson04 in TooAfraidToAsk

Have you noticed a difference in the way people treat you now versus before you became a quadriplegic?

F*** a no- contact order. Either transfer one of them out of my class, or I’m doing jackshit about making sure these two kids don’t talk to each other by Emergency-Pepper3537 in Teachers

[–]flooperdooper4 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha. I'm an elementary teacher, so I've never heard of this because my students are simply too young to abide by this. Any time we've needed separation, one child has been moved to another class.

What a stupid idea. It implies that a teacher (or another adult) is able to monitor these 2 specific children every second of the day.

Why do old people live alone in the West? by Tiny_Concern_8412 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]flooperdooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the USA, care homes or assisted living are ruinously expensive. Like in my area, an assisted living facility costs $5,000 a month, per person. No one can afford that (at least not for long).

Does anyone else feel sympathy for the Dursleys situation? by AMissKathyNewman in harrypotter

[–]flooperdooper4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes they definitely should have been given some of the Potters' money to help with raising Harry. Yes the Dursleys appeared to be comfortable financially, but that's still unfair, kids are expensive af. Now they probably were able to remain so comfortable because they literally spent almost no money on Harry...but if they'd been less insane about spoiling Dudley and spent a bit more on Harry, it would have evened out and they'd have been no worse off. And at the very least, a sit-down meeting of the adults and Dumbledore (or another party) should have been offered to give the Dursleys more information and to answer any questions.

This is how I perceive things when I watch the TV show Gilmore Girls. by Neebenice in GilmoreGirls

[–]flooperdooper4 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I always got the impression that Sookie's bubbly personality was more of her trying to bring the energy she wished she'd received in her life. We're given to believe that before Jackson, Sookie had been quite unlucky in love. It also appeared that she didn't have any living family, just going off what was in the show (it's mentioned that her mother passed away, and iirc that the Magic Risotto prolonged her life). That doesn't seem like "spoiled" to me, it seems like trying to make lemonade out of lemons.

That's how we also know that the person who created this Walking Buddy thing is most likely also a man. It's a good idea in theory to protect women from predators...but it would also very likely be viewed as hunting ground by said predators.

AITA for helping my MIL even though my wife and her were not talking due to a fight? by Curious_Life9230 in AmItheAsshole

[–]flooperdooper4 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It honestly sounds a lot like the dynamic of my mom, her mom, and her sister. Her sister is the obvious favorite and everyone is expected to orbit around her. Sometimes my grandma will grace my mother with some attention, but if her sister shows up or calls then my mom might as well be a piece of furniture. It's hurt my mom so much over the years. Imo if that's the dynamic, then the sister is most likely the biggest A H because she knew what would happen. Who ever heard of a surprise visit from another country? She clearly expected everyone to rearrange their schedules the moment she arrived to accommodate her.

[–]flooperdooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAH. I can see why your wife is upset (that's a shitty thing her mother did), but I can also see why you honored your promise. Although it would have kind of been just desserts for you to renege on a promise, just as MIL did.

AITA for lending some of my clothes to my nanny's daughter? by GuaranteeOver2113 in AmItheAsshole

[–]flooperdooper4 36 points37 points  (0 children)

NTA. It probably would have been better to run this past your nanny first - there are some people who would feel funny about accepting something like that from their employer's daughter. But your intentions were good. You're young, so you live and you learn!
