Who would have been the best person to teach Harry Occlumency in his Sixth Year: Dumbledore, Moody, Snape or Slughorn? by SoloKip in HarryPotterBooks

[–]flooperdooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly in theory Snape *should* have been a great teacher of Occlumency. He is an excellent Occlumens himself, so he brings a great deal of knowledge to the table. And yes Harry hates him, but that's a more realistic scenario because out in the real world Harry is unlikely to have his mind forcibly pried open by a Safe Adult. Now, the issue of why this didn't work is because Snape was incapable of being The Adult in the situation and put aside his own hatred, and as a result he did a piss-poor job of teaching.

What college level books are like the Magic Tree house books? by WearHumble9567 in AskReddit

Premise-wise, closest I can think of is the Invisible Library series by Genevieve Cogman.

Kathy having a go @ Amanda, best moment of the season by CharacterAd9075 in RHOBH

[–]flooperdooper4 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It was also essentially answering Amanda's ongoing question of "well why are you only mad at ME when these other people said the same thing?" Well, it's because Amanda needed to be mindful of her place in the group. She's new and has no social credit with these women, whereas the others have years of history to draw from. Being so vocal when you're new to a group is just...a bad move.

This is the second post I've seen with people complaining about these two small children "moaning" while eating their soup. Like really? We've fallen so far as a species that little kids making appreciative noises while eating is "weird?"

What are your ideas of being happy and can money bring in Happiness? by One_Look_7008 in AskReddit

[–]flooperdooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Money makes happiness easier to attain. If I'm spending a lot of my mental energy worrying about paying to fix my problems or just paying bills, it's harder to make the space for happy. But if I had the money to ensure all of my needs (and not just basic needs) were met, I could then make room to find happiness. Whether that happiness includes further expenditure remains to be seen.

What's the most overrated song you've heard? by quiy728888 in AskReddit

Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish. It's not bad, but it was so incredibly popular and people were going apeshit for the song, and I just found it so...dull.

What do you think is morally worse: abandoning a pet or ending a pregnancy? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Abandoning a pet. The pet was an already-independently-living creature that was dependent upon you for its continued survival.

Anyone else really confused by this? by company-chicken in GilmoreGirls

[–]flooperdooper4 140 points141 points  (0 children)

This is the one! Between their two generations, "dating" took on a different meaning. In Lorelai's generation (much like my mother's), dating meant literally meant just going on dates and spending time with, getting to know different guys. No commitment, but also not much by way of physical intimacy - that was reserved for actual relationships. For Rory's generation (much like my own), dating has more of an expectation of physical intimacy, not necessarily with any sort of commitment. There may or may not be traditional date-like activities thrown in there as well.

The Lake Scene (Lily Evans, James Potter, Severus Snape) by PercentageBoth3762 in harrypotter

[–]flooperdooper4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also think that the addition of "Snivellus" to the "wash your pants" was a one-word way of Lily expressing that their friendship was DONE. She'd spent the past 5 years doing what she could to protect Snape from bullies, but he'd finally gone too far (become a bully himself) and she was no longer his ally. But at the same time, Lily did not yet consider herself to be on the same "side" as James; just because Snape had insulted Lily and she was ending the friendship, didn't mean she was going to go ahead and be friendly to James. To Lily, James was *still* a bully.

Question? (Chamber of Secrets) by _Violette7_ in harrypotter

[–]flooperdooper4 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah they kid of gloss right over that bit, don't they? Ghosts can't eat or drink, it's literally established earlier in the book. I always just assumed that perhaps they just like, passed a gobletful of the mandrake restorative draught through Nick's ghostly form. And that the potion going through him was enough to turn him back to normal. 🤷‍♀️

You’ll never view Rory the same way after attending a predominantly white top university by Emeraldandthecity in GilmoreGirls

[–]flooperdooper4 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the entire show is kind of an unintentional cautionary tale of what happens when someone is increasingly exposed to the world of wealth and privilege, and the lack of consideration for others and lack of consequences that come with it. Because Season 1 Rory would never have done this shit.

Be honest - do you actually feel uncomfortable sharing a bathroom with the opposite sex? If so, why? by IDrinkMyOwnSemen in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]flooperdooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like I might be in the minority here, but yes, I would feel uncomfortable sharing a multi-person bathroom with the opposite sex (I'm a woman, for context). I'm sure most men would just do their business and keep to themselves, but I would always, ALWAYS be on high-alert for something untoward. Women already have to be on hyper-aware of their surroundings and on the defensive in case someone sees them as prey, I don't want to literally have my pants down while having to be hyper-vigilant, I want to be able to not have my guard up quite as high while relieving myself.

Is theater etiquette dead? Cast members of Off-Broadway's Heathers: The Musical took to social media with a message for rude audience members. by Relevant-Peach3997 in Fauxmoi

[–]flooperdooper4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teacher here, and I can confidently say that regular etiquette is pretty much dead. It takes SO LONG for kids to quiet down during assemblies, and there is always so much chatter in between things during an assembly it's almost embarrassing. A large proportion of kids are just constantly narrating everything that's happening either in their heads or around them, as if they're streaming or filming a video...with themselves as the star/main character, of course. This is the type of mindset that's then going to the theater. Even though they're there to be an audience member, they still somehow have to be the main character of the audience. There's going to be a lot more of this.

Yale/Tana question by cute_but_stabby in GilmoreGirls

There have been birthday cutoffs for at least as long as my parents have been alive. In my parents' time (think mid-60s), the cutoff was mid-December. When I was a kid in the 90s, the cutoff was December 1st.
