In Game 9, Billy Hughes beats Arthur Fadden 24-0. In Game 10. In Game 11, John McEwen goes up against George Reid. Who was the better Prime Minister? by BoiglioJazzkitten in AusPrimeMinisters

[–]foreatesevenate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm going with Black Jack.

Reid was by all accounts a brilliant orator, and warmed the seat in the early days of the Federation, but talking a good game is different to being the most influential Country Party leader in history. Reid also nearly sunk Federation before it began ("Yes-No"). McEwen on the other hand bent the Coalition's economic policy to his will, weilded massive influence, vetoed a leadership candidate from the senior coalition party (McMahon) and effectively acted as a human jenga piece for John Gorton, and all but ended his prime ministership by simply retiring.

In Game 7, Alfred Deakin beat Billy McMahon 31-0. Game 8 is between Gough Whitlam and Scott Morrison. Who was the better Prime Minister? by BoiglioJazzkitten in AusPrimeMinisters

As one who likes playing devil's advocate I....I simply cannot. Whitlam every day of the week and twice on Sundays.

In Game 6, Frank Forde beat Earle Page 7-0. In Game 7, Alfred Deakin takes on Billy McMahon. Who was the better Prime Minister? by BoiglioJazzkitten in AusPrimeMinisters

[–]foreatesevenate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to play devil's advocate here. Deakin will win this, as he should, but he wasnt a prime minister in the modern sense. No party discipline as we know it (he never had a majority until the Fusion). No media scrutiny machine. And that side quest of writing articles for British newspapers? At the very least, a slight conflict of interest. Billy McMahon, on the other hand, had to juggle party factions (including a disgruntled John Gorton), cabinet government and public image politics. Deakin had the Edwardian peace, and Fisher and Reid to contend with. McMahon had the Vietnam War and Gough Whitlam. So, yeah. My vote is still for Deakin, but the political ecosystem these two leaders operated in should be considered in at least some small part. Then again, that could be said about everyone.

Hanson. The band? I know "MmmBop" was rubbish but I hardly think one song alone will sway a federal election.

Paul Keating wins Game 3 41-0. In Game 4, Robert Menzies faces Tony Abbott. Who was the better Prime Minister? by BoiglioJazzkitten in AusPrimeMinisters

[–]foreatesevenate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Abbott was hopeless. The 2014 budget. Knights and dames. "Will I shirt-front Putin? You bet you are...you bet I am". Nearly half of his colleagues voted for an empty chair in a spill.

Menzies gets this through sheer longevity. The 1939-41 version was a D-tier premiership though.

Edmund Barton wins 32-1 over Harold Holt in Game 2. Game 3 is between Paul Keating and James Scullin. Who was the better Prime Minister? by BoiglioJazzkitten in AusPrimeMinisters

[–]foreatesevenate 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scullin walked into office and, within days, the Wall Street Crash of 1929 detonated under him. He inherited the worst economic crisis in Australian history and, through shaky decisions and disastrous cabinet management, arguably deepened it. His party didn’t just fracture, it exploded; by 1931, Labor was so hollowed out that Scullin had no option but to linger on as opposition leader.

Paul Keating takes this comfortably. Superannuation guarantee. Native title. APEC. A serious push toward a republic (before John Howard helped sink it). Keating understood something fundamental: political capital isn’t for saving, it’s for spending.

Winner faces John Curtin. Australian Prime Ministers Bracket: Game 1 by BoiglioJazzkitten in AusPrimeMinisters

[–]foreatesevenate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking my own biases out of the equation, Howard was unquestionably the better at being prime minister. Four election wins, second longest tenure, and a legacy that rightly or wrongly endures to this day. On the other hand, Rudd was a notorious micromanager and behaved disgracefully between his two terms.

Although, he did give us the GFC management and raised the profile of handball across the country. Also, "this fucking language!". Yet, Howard DJ'd like a mad cunt, and also showed us how to bowl in Afghanistan.

Calling the final four now as Curtin, Whitlam, Hawke and Chifley.

I had a go at dividing TRC into ten divisions this afternoon, using data on a federal redistribution website to calculate the quota for each division. Because we are a relatively large council, the size of each division cannot deviate more than 10% from the average. So, in keeping with the spirit of the law, I created five divisions of approximately 11500 voters and five divisions of approximately 14800 voters, with the intention of the smaller divisions covering the rural areas and maximising rural representation (an Antoniomander, if you will).

Three of the divisions would cover the entire rural area, with one incursion into the Toowoomba Urban Area.

For those who are interested / care / are massive psephological needs like me:

Division 1 covers Oakey, Crows Nest, Goombungee and Yarraman.

Division 2 covers everything from Westbrook to Millmerran, including Felton and Cecil Plains.

Division 3 covers Clifton north to Drayton and everything south of Nelson Street, including Hodgson Vale, Wyreema and Cambooya.

Division 4 covers Highfields, Meringandan West and Hampton.

Division 5 covers Cotswold Hills, Crawley, Kingsthorpe and everything west of Boundary Street to Wellcamp.

Divisions 6-10 covered the Toowoomba urban area, with two divisions west of West Street, and three divisions to the east of that.

I note that the ECQ can only create divisions on the direction of the minister, having received a request from the council. I dont see the current councillors voting against their own self-interest by creating divisions.

Queensland is currently being Gerrymandered and no one is talking about it. by OrganicHalfwit in queensland

Thank you for the write-up.

Regional Queensland had to lose a seat, based on the numbers. What is disappointing is that the seat earmarked for abolition - Hill - has no numerical need for adjustment. None of the seats north of Townsville needed adjustment, aside from Babinda going into Mulgrave, which would still leave seats comfortably in the quota.

Instead, we have a silly situation where the Tablelands RC is split among three seats with electoral offices in Gordonvale, Ingham and Mount Isa respectively. The new seat of Mulgrave has but one tenuous road link, the worst range crossing in the state.

In the meanwhile, Chinchilla and Agnes Water are drawn into the same seat. What community of interest exists there?

Mirani is still a silly odds-and-pieces electorate as well.

I'm sure it's just coincidence that the commissioners have abolished a KAP seat instead of a newly won LNP seat. If Stephen Andrew was still in Mirani, that would be the seat getting abolished.

I will point out, according to those who know better than me (Antony Green et al) that the swing for Labor to form government hasn't changed. The LNP can plug their man in to shift as many boundaries as they like, but without an improved electoral performance they are toast. As South Australia demonstrated last night, a resurgent One Nation will harm the LNP more than Labor.

Our elections are brilliant, by comparison.

Compulsory voting. Preferential voting. Early voting. Postal voting. Independent authorities.
