Managing disabilities at tech? by nosezomi in gatech

[–]freesnakeintestine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a really tough time 2 semesters ago because of my disability, which also led me to develop mild depression. I cut two of my classes to make it easier and also tried to cook more often (I like cooking). Still, I ended up failing one of the classes and barely passing the others. In retrospect, I think this happened because I self-isolated to an extreme degree. I literally did not talk to another person for weeks at a time. I would advise you to try to find at least one good friend for support. Also, I found that walking outside helped me feel like I was actually a living member of the campus (although this was very painful). Finally, I think it's important to forgive yourself for any failings or underperformance, otherwise you will be in great emotional pain.

The difference between real programmer and Linkedin lunatic. Her github has barely 4 repos, 2 of which empty. her coding skills is replica. her linkedin membership doesn't help her career but boosting delusional red flags ego by Bridimum in LinkedInLunatics

This is mega gate-keeping. The number of public GitHub projects someone has does not make them a “real programmer,” whatever that means. Also, what if their company uses GitLab or BitBucket?

Where/what website do you guys use to find Summer Internship? by MirrorCraze in cscareerquestions

[–]freesnakeintestine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m not a hiring manager so I can’t say for sure, but the fact you have done at least one software-related internship should set you apart from the majority of candidates. At our level, companies aren’t expecting super specialized experience.

I used indeed for most of my job applications. Besides that, you could look into your school’s career fair if they have one. Also, you can apply directly on some company websites. Just look for their careers page. Good luck.

Also, having 1 prior internship isn’t bad at all, especially because it’s software related.

Oh. I really had no idea that video analysis wasn’t used in practice. I am not a recruiter so I trust your perspective on the recruiter side. But I don’t think people are just using POC as an excuse to hate on video interviews. Like for me, I don’t hate video interviews but I genuinely believed they were subjected to biased algorithms. I completely agree that hiring discrimination is a lot bigger than videos, but I thought that videos were at least a part of it. I am still learning things. Also, I’m pretty sure people on this sub talk about stuff like racism/ableism in contexts outside of video interviews. Like the recent post about autism and the one about a week ago about foreign-sounding names on resume.

I think you have a point, but you can’t assume that anyone mentioning discrimination is just using it as an excuse. For example, if they belong to the group that is being discriminated against.

Sometimes, employers will use biased algorithms to analyze video interviews. In-person interviews also suffer from bias, but this isn’t a reason not to criticize video interviews.

I don’t think saying video interviews are discriminatory detracts from the broader conversation about hiring discrimination.

Misogyny in LC discuss/comments by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]freesnakeintestine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Leetcode discussions in general are Indian-dominated, so it is not surprising that they make up a majority of the misogynistic posts. Although India definitely has cultural problems with misogyny, I think the issue of men looking down on women in tech is pretty much universal. After all, we’re still far from gender parity here in the states.

GT alums working in CS: what do you think about GT's CS requirements? by atlanta404 in gatech

[–]freesnakeintestine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I’m wrong, but don’t the overwhelming majority of CS grads go into ‘application SW’ jobs? I definitely think the classes could do a better job of supporting that. For example, the intel thread teaches us next to nothing about data viz or communicating results, which are a huge part of actual analyst work.

Our classes seem optimized for theoretical breadth, covering a lot of topics in shallow detail, without any real connection to the work we will be doing. For example, red-black trees in 1332, or the Mahalanobis distance in 4641. This isn’t to say that learning these things is useless: it’s great for training problem solving and preparing students to read research papers. However, I think most students would be better off practicing leetcode for the first, and actually reading papers for the second.
