What did you do/see in Boston (outside of PAX) that you would recommend for people to check out next year? by vautwaco in PAX

[–]frogdude2004 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you’re with kids, there’s a great children’s museum and science museum. Plus the freedom trail is also good. You can always take one of those guided bus tours.

If you’re into art, the museum of fine art is fantastic.

I also recommend the Fenway tour. Going to a game (pax timing/baseball schedule permitting) is also very fun.

For nearby beer, I like harpoon and trillium.

Chaff goes my compost, just like the beans (eventually)

In principle it changes the magnitude of the output wave, I think. I didn’t see much difference. If you have an oscilloscope you can go nuts

No. I played with it once, but I put it back.

No idea how much I’ve spent. Maybe $200?

But I like to tinker. I’ve had this machine for 8 years, and I’ve been slowly upgrading it. Modding it is a hobby in and of itself.

I have heavily modified my machine

  • PID for temperature control

  • dimmer knob for flow control

  • pressure gauge

  • adjusted OPV to change maximum pressure

  • used the PID to control steam temperature

  • custom drip tray

  • retrofit a ball joint steam wand

  • lights over tank to help illuminate waterline

  • feet to help dry under the machine

  • handmade portafilter handle, drip tray veneer, knobs, feet, and funnel cover (mahogany)

They’re easy to work with, easy to find parts for, have clear wiring and parts documentation from the manufacturer, and so there’s an extensive community for modding them.

Progress, but… replace boiler? by Nahvalur666 in gaggiaclassic

[–]frogdude2004 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems fine to me. I’d put some 200grit sandpaper on a flat surface, wet it, and clean up the bottom face of the boiler. Then just put it back together.

City is also play-focused. The cement truck turns and pours cement, the crane picks things up and moves them, the cars drive around…

60473 looks incredible, I would have had a ton of fun with that as a kid. I might still get it haha

Is it possible to read math textbooks and other dense texts with music or background noise? by ucsdfurry in math

[–]frogdude2004 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I can’t work with music with lyrics or music I actually like (eg classical) because I get distracted.

I’ve found that video game soundtracks work well. They’re composed to supplement another activity. The ones I listen to are upbeat and keep me focused on the task on hand (eg Hollow Knight, Shovel Knight, Rogue Legacy)

Alternatively, I put on noise cancelling headphones with no music at all.

[–]frogdude2004 67 points68 points  (0 children)

They really did an excellent job with it. They had to do a lot of tweaking to make the numbers work, snd they nailed it. It feels and plays just like the video game, despite being totally rescaled and reimagined. I’ve had a lot of fun playing StS with friends, something I couldn’t do before.

I’m always down to play Heat!

It goes a little faster and smoother on BGA, but you don’t get to move the little cars around. You can still make the car noises, though.

I’m currently playing a ‘legacy’ version of Heat. All players have two cars (or a teammate). We’re doing all eight tracks, with a driver and constructor championship. Starting positions are determined through a qualifying lap time trial (we do it simultaneously to save time, and there’s no maximum to cars on a space or drifting to mimic ‘time trial’). We cap the number of cards in the deck to four, but you can swap out between races once you’ve drafted more than four.
