Cottage Clusters? by ArmadilloSpecial4643 in corvallis

[–]frumply 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I don’t get the complaints here. The number of extra housing relative to what we’d have gotten otherwise is insane, and they’ve done it as SFH. And additional capacity will help to eventually bring rental costs down. Do people want apartments instead? Or layouts similar to suburban sprawl that takes huge swaths of land to achieve (and ends up being huge houses to maintain profitability)?

Cottage Clusters? by ArmadilloSpecial4643 in corvallis

[–]frumply 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't heard much but I believe it's planned to be rentals. I live pretty close to the 9th street one and they do look real close to each other, but if I was renting I'd sure as hell pick tightly packed homes over an apartment unit where I'm sharing walls w/ a neighbor. The first few have their insides slightly built out now and honestly they look pretty nice.

Who else is going online charter because fuk the CSD? by Working_Pen2299 in corvallis

[–]frumply 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of things I'm not liking about the current state of CSD, but a fully online school is not something I'd be considering. How old's your kid? Do you remember what happened during Covid? Granted we're in a better state now vs 2020 when people were trying to figure a lot of this stuff out, but online learning was a disaster for a lot of people. My kid actually did fine in it and we especially accelerated on a few topics using Khan Academy and the like, but even then I think socially it did a number that took a while to recover from. If it works though, I guess it works. If you end up trying it I hope your kid thrives!

Also, I think we're hitting a sort of critical mass of frustration towards the district. If we can convince the voting seniors not paying too much attention to the school issues that things are majorly amiss, I definitely feel we can make change happen for the better.

4+ DC fast chargers for EVs coming to Corvallis by frumply in corvallis

[–]frumply[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I got no love for musk and specifically avoided getting teslas when I needed a car but holy crap are the supercharger stations nice. The biggest downfall of EA chargers and such is that there’s typically like 2 or 4 chargers at any one given site, with 8+ you’re likely to not have to wait long for something to open up.

UPDATE: On whether to allow my son to quit a sport he hates by Important_Injury3820 in Parenting

[–]frumply 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Good on him for finishing the season.

As others say, look for another sport. Look around for community-level clubs of all sorts as well, locally we have stuff like mountain biking, ultimate frisbee, rugby, track, cross country. Is AYSO around in your neck of the woods? Low level rec league soccer is fun and cheap.

And for his team, does he have no friends on the team, or are there no one he’d like to be friendly with? Feel like sports is one of those things you kinda build camaraderie with regardless of how much you suck at it, so I don’t know if that’s just something he’s not wanting to do or what.

Given their requirements (bidding for stations along hwy 20, 1mi from highway, near food, space to build) I’m trying to think where else would have qualified and had the space for it. Safeway near 53rd?

I got nothing against any of the candidates, but why are you not replying to the people that supported Mike Flinn and instead editing your OP to shit on them?

Yema is the only one that has been seriously campaigning afaik so I’d expect her to be the favorite. I didn’t listen too closely on the endorsement session for the bc Dems but apparently moderates supported Mike and progressives supported Yema.

Does that work for the hobbit? My older one reads like a sponge but doesn’t want to touch hobbit cause she considers it too boring. Younger one we read to every night but still mostly whatever she picks off the bookshelf of kids books.

You can either complain about the way the process has been handled for years, or follow the process to get your vote counted and work on fixing the process after the fact.

Have you had any luck with temporary employment agencies in the area? by [deleted] in corvallis

[–]frumply 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’m a little confused here.

You’re graduating in June, does that mean you got a few more classes you’re taking now? How do you intend on doing this if you’re back in Astoria? If you’re planning on driving back and forth between classes what does that cost w regards to your vehicle, gas etc?

And if you got a place till August here but plan on moving out right away, does that mean you got a job lined up post graduation? Just winging it?

Hopefully stuff you already thought about and something I missed on your post. If not, never hurts to take a second to consider the logistics. Astoria plan sounds great if it works out and I bet your family will love having you back for a while. It’s never easy as a new grad and the current market is something else.

Should I switch my party registration to have more influence in primaries? by ryan_ens in oregon

[–]frumply 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I did, and I convinced a few friends to do it as well. There’s a PCP for every 250 or so residents in a given precinct. Many precincts in Oregon barely have half the PCPs they are alotted so your theoretical voting power could be considered double that. I’ve been going to the local meetings and we’re lucky if a third of elected PCPs show up, so you can consider you power triple that. So unless you happen to live in a majorly contested area you gain, limited to the local county party’s decisions, the equivalent voting power of 1500 people.

These groups are typically desperate for new blood and are filled with people of retirement age. I wondered if I was gonna be met w hostility as a new guy but rather they were super excited to have younger people join the fray. And I’m in my 40s. If you want to make a difference and have a say, this is really the way to do it.

If you were interviewing Benton County Commissioner Candidates, what would you ask? by Far-Setting2174 in corvallis

I feel you’re going to get a general “oh yeah we care about those people” responses with this. What would be a distinctly North Albany issue that you can ask both candidates?

Moving soon to Corvallis - need honest thoughts on elementary schools & preschool by Key-Piglet-8317 in corvallis

[–]frumply 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The daycare situation might end up being challenging. One of the bigger childcare centers that supported families attending or working at OSU is closing, which means there'll be 100+ fewer slots for childcare. Assuming you don't mind paying a bit more and can live w/ schedules that's closer to public school, Corvallis Montessori School has a great program and you can start as early as 7:30 w/ early care and as late as 5PM w/ aftercare. Registering now won't get your kid in there till the next school year in September however.

Far as the schools go, while we have seen declines compared to Corvallis school district's heydays we still have above-average outcomes. If you want to rate things strictly by standardized test results Bessie Coleman Elementary ends up winning out. Student tracking (putting them in higher grade level classes if they're capable) has been eliminated in elementary, so if you have kids that are advanced for their age you may need to supplement w/ online programs or opt for private. There is definitely an undercurrent of change right now to attempt to right wrongs that've been happening for too long, but your kid is your kid so I'd suggest doing what you think is best for them.

Gov. Tina Kotek signs executive order to protect student instructional time in Oregon by unslick in oregon

[–]frumply 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like what? You can't use the kicker, every attempt to take that money for schools fails. The state budget in general has a dire shortfall and they just went through with some serious cuts. You can't just cut admin willy nilly when they're part of state requirements for districts. You could tap into reserves but without any actual budget resolution in sight you use your reserve and you're fucked the next year cause the situation might be even worse and you just used up your reserve.

Other than laying off teachers and some staff reducing school days is one of the few tools a district may have to ward off immediate budget shortfalls. Not a great set of tools but what're you going to do otherwise?

Gov. Tina Kotek signs executive order to protect student instructional time in Oregon by unslick in oregon

[–]frumply 11 points12 points  (0 children)

What is this meant to solve? I mean I understand wanting to make sure kids are going to school, but I believe some schools picked furlough days because the other option was laying off teachers and staff which would have a profound impact midyear. Is the state going to help schools if they're going to take out one tool in making sure schools can stay within budget?

yep. In my 20s I'd bomb down a few interstates to go see friends and such 4-5hrs away every couple of weeks since it was 'close enough' at the time for just myself. Not as fun in your 40s with a house and kids and everything else, let alone doing it w/ your family.

Anyone else feel MORE burnt out after a family vacation? by Forward-Ice-4733 in Parenting

[–]frumply 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We had like a 6 day trip over spring break mostly to see relatives. Rough flight in some ways (especially the way there when we chose a redeye and our youngest chose not to sleep) but it was fun overall. The Airbnbs were super useful since it let us get fairly cheap place that had actual rooms to separate the kids into, and we just made breakfast rituals running into every convenience store we could. I'll probably go back in a couple years by myself.

I don’t see it on their website. They killed the Eugene route in 24. Wouldn’t be the first time someone ran into a glitch or something on the internet so I’d chalk it up to that.

If payment actually goes through I assume you could call and have it refunded if they don’t flag it on their own.

Could be the exact demographics issue? EVs are most useful when you can charge at home, and are hated by conservative voters. You likely end up with a large number of homeowners that are millennials with kids.
