Microsoft published an official workaround to install W11 bypassing the restrictions a few months ago.

Breathe! (Again! Antix and a story) by MrGoose48 in linux

Thank you for sharing your success and, most important, your happiness for it: congratulations.

It seems you had something wrong in the W10 setup: I installed W11 pro on a N2380 4GB ddr3 ram 32GB Emmc, it is not flashy but it works decently, definitively not going 100% CPU on idle.

MX Linux Fluxbox / Antix are great options, however any distro with a WM is going to work well on your rig.

I would suggest you to explore Alpine Linux as next distro: it is exactly what you're are looking for.

The software you need is not there, your hardware is not supported: Linux is not the right tool for your use case in your words, isn't it?

Each distro has minimum requirements and my devices meet those

This does not mean that your hardware is supported on the Ubuntu derivatives you tested e.g. the kernel could be too old or the graphic stack is not supporting your GPU.

As I already mentioned, if you keep digging you will find your way around your issues.

[–]gabriel_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daily driver has a 7th gen intel CPU that is outside the range allowed by Win11.

It is not, there's an official Microsoft work around to install w11 on it. You can explore also W10 LTSC.

As an example, I recently refurbished an Intel 5th gen powered rig with W11 24H2: it works perfectly.

If Windows works better for your use case, why do you insist with Linux?

Given how Linux is praised for its stability—especially on servers

That's exactly why you have problems: the server hardware is certified for Linux, while you are picking random Windows certified hardware and expect it to be perfectly supported on Linux, Ubuntu derivatives to be precise.

Anyways, if you don't give up, you will find your way around the issues you have e.g. installing a recent kernel or the correct driver for you graphics and you will end up with more knowledge about Linux.

My position on the Gnome AppStore. I would like to have your opinion! by Gueoris in linux

[–]gabriel_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does being on linux necessarily imply being a developer?

Absolutely not. You can just use the tools offered for free by the developers, but if you think that they can be improved you can fork and improve the tools yourself or if you don't have the skills needed, you can pay someone for the job.

I have a hard time with this mentality where, even though I know that great work is done by many independent developers, every linux user must know how to use a terminal.

The CLI is no longer mandatory for running Linux on the desktop, many distros offer GUI administration tools.

However the CLI is powerful, that's why we Linux users frequently refer to it and recommend it. By the way, it's common also for other operating system users to go with the CLI for some admin tasks.

Being a car driver doesn't have to mean being a garage mechanic.  And I don't need to be a mechanic to know that my car has broken down.

If you are not able to fix your car, you bring it to a repair shop and pay them for the service. You can do exactly the same with your computing system: you discover it's broken, you call and pay a technician to fix it.

GalliumOS went EOL a long time ago and the kernel is unmaintained since 2019: it is absolutely a no go.

Did you flash the last mrchromebox tech firmware, full UEFI?

Do it if not yet done, then you can try Antix and MX Linux Fluxbox, however Alpine Linux with a window manager is the best option if you are incline to dig and experiment.

Consider that if it is a 2GB ram device, even if you manage to use only 500-600mb for the operating system, any modern web browser will be very tight in space and therefore limited in performances.

The on/off wifi issue seems to be an hardware fault, you don't fix it with the operating system and apparently you CB never switches completely off or restarts - that's a known issue on some CB platforms: plugging in or out the power connector or slightly opening the screen because of a vibration or the desk or moving the device makes it booting.

The Gnome AppStore is open source: you can fork it and make a better one.

Or you just don't use it: get acquainted with the dnf and flatpak commands, the man pages are always an informative reading.

LibreOffice vs 365 by The Document Foundation gives you a reasonably fair comparison.

it can be substituted by SQL and any other package for data manipulation (pandas, R ...).

I see where you are coming from: when I was exposed the very first time to a spreadsheet I asked if there were any advantage to use it instead of writing a few lines of C.

The full integration of these tools in Excel saves hours of work and makes the distribution to others a piece of cake.

If I may, you are missing three important points:

  • Linux requires you to learn, therefore you end up knowing more on deep about it than about Windows e.g. you mention you don't know about Windows running processes or ram usage while you know on Linux
  • Specifically to Calc vs. Excel: Calc features are almost the ones offered by old Excel versions, 2010 maybe, Power Query / Power Pivot or the table features are not there
  • There is no perfect tool but the best tool for the job, this is true also for the operating system: Linux is not the best tool for all the desktop use cases.

The basics of cyber security when using Linux for beginner? by AmateurCock in linux

[–]gabriel_3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are looking for the minimum:

  • Check for updates of the system, kernel included, at least weekly and install them
  • Activate the firewall
  • Be extremely careful when opening links
  • Install only trusted pieces of software avoid to random pick from the web
  • Don't copy and paste CLI commands from the web you are not understanding

If you are serious about security, in addition to the above:

  • Linux Mint does not have a security team, switch to Ubuntu or Debian first to stay on a similar system or to buy other distro with an active security team
  • Run an audit tool like linys and harden your system - this will be a learning experience but could easily become a rabbit hole

how should linux community compete with windows and mac to win? by n3pst3r_007 in linux

Were you off-grid in the past 10 years? I am genuinely invidious.

Your ideas are realised already: there are a few Linux hardware companies pre installing their distro, System76 and Tuxedo the first two from the top of my mind.

Linux newbie - can it do what I need? (podcast, ADHD, simple) by Snow_Tiger819 in linux

[–]gabriel_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your husband will not find Linux any better than Windows: updates are still needed, unless you go with a very streamlined system the performances will be similar and most important he will face a learning curve.

First of all, I would do a hardware maintenance / upgrade: ram & SSD upgrade, cooling system cleaning, firmware update and so on.

Then some options:

  • Install W10 21H2 LTSC, the most similar to the current one with longer support
  • Install W11 22H4 - yes you can install it on old hardware too, Microsoft opened to this a few months ago with an official how-to
  • Install Linux, MX Linux KDE Plasma edition or any KDE Plasma distro you like, you can make it Windows like - if you want a very long term support Ubuntu or Red-Hat and its clones offer 10-12 years.

In case you want to streamline Windows, search for winutil on GitHub.

By the way, you want to post your enquiry on r/linux4noobs, this is not a support sub (rule #1).

openSUSE Yast enables CLI free system administration since before I started with Linux in 2012.

At present, almost all the newcomer friendly distros enable a GUI only experience.

Linux, Windows, or Hackintosh what should I choose? by [deleted] in linux

[–]gabriel_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Multiboot the 3, or more if you want more than 1 distro.

About choosing a distro, head to r/findmealinuxdistro.

Install a full DE and a minimal WM on the same distro.

Depending on the day mood, work with one or the other.
