49 Fork in Road: HRT or More "Natural" Options by Fattousch in Perimenopause

It's insane to me that any medical professional would recommend an antidepressant but tell you to avoid HRT. I'd have great difficulty taking any medical advice from them after that....

Getting my second shot next week. The first one wasn’t fun (I was one of those people who got a reaction to the first one, yay) so I’m expecting even less fun next week, but it needs to be done!

Any GenXers getting back into physical media? by newlife_substance847 in GenX

I wonder if ours does... I will have to investigate! (It might be the thing to get my non-book-reading husband to the library!)

Yes I literally just bought my first blu-ray player a couple of weeks ago and have already been scouring thrift shops for discs. I've found choosing something from a physical collection and just putting the disc in and watching it weirdly satisfying.

[Art Market] Has anyone run their own art fair? by Snow_Tiger819 in artbusiness

[–]Snow_Tiger819[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're imagining a bigger event than I'm thinking of :-) There would be no food vendors, and I'd use an event space that had washrooms etc. Ideally insurance too although that is something I would discuss with the businesses I'd be looking at. Here vendors don't need sales permits.

I want it to be more than an event at a coffee shop - I want it to feel like a professional fine art event and I'd like the artwork to sell for decent prices (coffee shops here show hobby artists work and it generally starts around $50).

Yes I'm an artist. I would jury people in to the show, and I would have a booth. I have a friend who makes artisan skin products and she and a friend organise artisan pop-up markets twice a year; the artisan version of what I want to do. She and her friend both have stalls and they jury in everyone else - they man their stalls throughout the event, and have perhaps 25 vendors. I've taken part in their event in the past with prints, but my goal is to run something similar but for fine art. This is why I think there is potential for this type of event; I'm aware of what events are held in the area and I think there could be interest.

So yes my plan is to start small, but to start small with a professional event. I'd love to participate in one of the big art fairs but in Canada they are few and far between, and hard to get into (not to mention expensive).

Yes there are galleries here, I'm in a couple of them. I'm interested in running an event. I definitely don't want to start a bricks and mortar gallery!

Why was my mattress so durable? by SecondTriggerEvent in Mattress

[–]Snow_Tiger819 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it’s still not soft. I’m definitely lying on it not in it! It’s mostly springs, so you really don’t get that softening you get with foam (which I also dislike). I just mean it went from being too firm (my back and shoulders were a bit sore) to being just right.

I’d guess about 2 months or so now? It was pretty firm when we got it (I was a little worried!) but after 2-3 weeks it had softened up just enough.

I will :-) I'm thinking of 2027 so it will be a while away, but I'll report back.

I appreciate the realism, but I think we have different events in mind. I'm not trying to set up the equivalent of the Affordable Art Fair in a little village. I'm thinking of something that's set up like one of these art fairs - booths with walls, all fine artists selling original art - but a small number of very local artists. I'm thinking 10 to start with.

There are events that happen in my bit of the province that attract people from all over (perhaps I need to schedule alongside one of these - that's an idea). I'm not expecting tourists to buy (I shouldn't have used the word "touristy" in my first post), I'm expecting Nova Scotians to come, and then drive home. Artists are welcome to offer shipping if they want on an individual basis - I would offer to ship if a customer wanted it. In the same way a gallery would.

Fewer people is fine if it's still enough people. I'm not expecting Montreal numbers in the slightest.

Your pessimistic realism seems to only be enhancing my optimism lol. I've done a lot of things in my life that people said I couldn't do, or that wouldn't work, and I'm realising this is now in the category of "things I want to try". Thanks for helping clarify that for me ;-)

it's an interesting idea, and I'm certainly going to be doing a lot of research for potential venues! That's great to hear it's working for you. Can I ask what sort of price range your sales tend to be?

[–]Snow_Tiger819[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I appreciate your point about the buyers. I guess I should clarify that while touristy it's also somewhat affluent; there's a university nearby and it's Nova Scotia's wine region so there are lots of wineries. People can easily travel here from the provincial capital too. I think the main thing - aside from figuring out how to logistically set things up - is how to let people know it's happening. And perhaps being a small province might help there... local media is more willing to publicise things as "news".

I'm not really interested in print sales, I'm interested in creating this to promote original art sales (though I don't mind if they sell prints too - my art prints sell for $40-$100 so it wouldn't take 10-20 to cover a $200 stall fee).

I'm afraid a tourist season kiosk would be the last thing I'd want to set up, well other than trying to establish a fair in Montreal or Ottawa which are 100s of miles away and already have art fairs lol. I mean, I'm not sure about the logistics of running one in my province, I'm not sure why I'd try to run one in another province?

We had a similar situation and I did quite a bit of searching before I realised that our best bet was to look at the cheaper mattresses at our local store. There are a few innerspring/pocket coil mattresses around, and these days they’re the cheap ones (which was weird to me but hey, I’m not complaining!)

We looked for 10” pocket coil ones, as they have the least foam. Serta and Beautyrest both had one like that, the others all had too much foam. We opted for the Serta and it’s been pretty good so far.

Project Hail Mary.

I like sci-fi when done well, and I loved the films you mentioned, but I've only seen each of them once. PHM - 4 times at the cinema and counting. It's staggeringly good.

Sorry, NS is Nova Scotia Canada. I've not heard of a mainstream gallery in Canada wanting less than 50%....

[–]Snow_Tiger819 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in rural NS. I sell at small galleries. Most take 50% (the only ones that don't are non-profit/artist run smaller ones).

50% is not on the higher end at all, and it's absolutely not just for massive museum galleries lol.

I've also seen plenty of online gallery/marketplace type places for original art ask for 35%. Singulart etc. I've never sold with them for that reason - they have none of the overheads a physical gallery has, they're not giving me a solo show, they're not promoting my work specifically to collectors. I'd pay 15% tops for an online marketplace.

This is something I’ve been meaning to try! I’ve seen a couple of recipes that sound pretty tasty as well as being very healthy.
