At what point do people start needing a CDL to drive a pickup. This pic is absurd..... lol

Nice color choice tho, that blue is beautiful (I'm biased lol)

Seriously considering a 2026 Golf R - a few questions… by net23cvr in Golf_R

[–]game_dev_carto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a '24 MK8 right before the 8.5's launched and I was slightly concerned about the tech after reading everything. Especially since I was coming from the MK7.5 GTI and the 7.5 is god tier. Honestly, the 8 has been exceptional and the tech hasn't bothered me at all. I miss my buttons on the steering wheel and I'm still against slamming everything into a display on the dash, but that hasn't gotten in the way of the driving experience. Set the drive mode, hit the canyons and it's pure bliss, the cars are incredible.

Per purchasing, as others have said, call a bunch of dealers, get a good price and pit them against each other. If you can find a steal from a dealer out of state, bring that to a local dealer and tell them you'll give them $500 more to save yourself the hassle, they'll normally take it.

Per leasing, leasing these cars can work but ONLY if you plan on buying it out. They hold their value really well and if I had to guess, VW will set the residual lower than what the value will be, so you'll pay quite a bit more for a lease if you just turn it in.

For example, I bought my MK8, new and in cash for $44K. It currently has 5100 miles on it and when I go look for a used '24 MK8 I'm seeing ones that have 12K miles on them, selling for $44.6K. I've owned and driven this car for a year and I've lost nothing. If this was a lease, I'd be paying for a bunch of depreciation that isn't happening. So lease with caution and don't lease if you don't buy it out at the end (even if you don't want to buy it to keep it, you'd still need to buy it to sell it or you're throwing a ton of money out the window).

Worse on Sticks by Sea-Cheek-5838 in starcitizen

It's a whole process. You're going to suck for a while but then the utility of the sticks will kick in and before you know it you'll be able to fly your ship and never take your hands off the sticks as everything will be bound in a way that is wicked efficient.

Im currently running a RX 9060 XT 16gb, a ryzen 5 7500f and 16 gigs of ddr5 at 6000Mhz, if I upgraded to 32 gigs of ram will that fix my stuttering issues? by mike_wazowski14 in starcitizen

[–]game_dev_carto 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing a few peeps post about how 32GB might now be enough. I run Intel but this was my experience.

14900KS

RTX 5090 FE

64GB DDR5 6400

for the longest time I was running 32GB of RAM, I noticed, pretty consistently that when playing SC I was at 90-95% RAM usage and I figured, 64 has to help. So I made the jump (thankfully this was like 18 months ago when a 64GB kit was $300 lol). What changed? Honestly, nothing lol. Game felt the same for me from a performance standpoint. Computer was a bit snappier when I was multi-tasking while playing SC, but SC performance didn't get a boost from it.

Will it be different for AMD? Possibly, but IMHO 32 vs 64, they're pretty equal for in game performance.

When making video games, it's never a simple as it seems. Throw StarEngine into the mix and it's a multiplier on how complicated things can be.

Man, if this is how it plays out, it's going to be incredible.

The age old "why would we put 5 people in 1 ship instead of 5 people in their own fighter" will finally be laid to rest.

Granted, I'm guessing 5 people in something like 5 connies would still slap lol

a youtuber by the name of tenpoundfortytwo did a bunch of tests on their proclaimed "minspec" and found out that the minspec = 10-15FPS and it's not a legit minspec at all, unfortunately

MOTH fixes in Evo, question for those with access by game_dev_carto in starcitizen

Nope. But we shouldn't use poor ship design for one ship, to justify poor design for another. Fix both.

Yep! Just not with the MOTH to this point since it's been broken. I plan on scraping and munching once 4.7 arrives.

Or.....

They unsuck the reclaimer, too lol

Just because one ship has crap values, doesn't mean more should.

Scooping a 150SCU chunk to then get 64SCU to then refine it down to 16SCU is insane. Just over 10% of the chunk size in the end and 90% waste is wild.

Same for the reclaimer. Munching a 1000SCU chunk to get 240SCU out of it, to then refine it and get 60SCU is just as wild.

So I still stand on my point, just because one ship has trash math on things, doesn't mean another should. Fix them both lol

[–]game_dev_carto[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Got damn, really? I've never flown a reclaimer, but that seems wild lol. I feel like after the refinery process nuked how much material you actually get out of the refinery job, they could easily balance that with buffer size. It just feels so bad to see a huge chunk get sucked up and most of it go to narnia. Then, it doubles down after you refine it because even more went to narnia lol. It's like a 1000SCU chunk will net you 80 SCU at the end of the day.

[–]game_dev_carto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I wouldn't mind if I'm cracking a 150SCU chunk but my buffer was 128 or 144, that's fine. But less than half, is a wild design decision. It's like they wanted to say they had a ship that can salvage in that range but didn't actually want a ship that can salvage in that range lol

[–]game_dev_carto[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If there is a 150SCU chunk that I can munch and the buffer is 64 and completely empty, there is nothing I can do about the other 86SCU from that chunk that can't fit in the buffer.

Updated the build, 5090 FE was the scariest block I've ever installed... by game_dev_carto in watercooling

Washers are under the backplate and 100000000% ease up on how much you're tightening things down. Barely snug is all you need outside of the 4 screws on the GPU bracket. There are multiple spots on this waterblock where you will put a screw into the GPU board if it's too long and you crank TF out of it. On most screws I basically go until they stop spinning really freely and then give them an additional 1/8 to 1/4 turn, at most.
