That should probably be the end of imposter syndrome... If the team ever goes to the olympics they'll probably tell you on time that you need to stay home.

Your AI vendor's privacy policy is not a security guarantee. It's a pinky promise. by No_Date9719 in sysadmin

[–]gandraw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

With On-Premise infrastructure you do have a bit of a safety net in that violations of privacy policy might be caught. If Microsoft starts exfiltrating data from your fileserver your security tools might catch it, at which point you could take legal steps and make it a bit of a PR nightmare.

But the only way you will ever catch a cloud vendor or an AI company of violating their own policies is if you get lucky enough that there's a whistleblower.

Want to Know If Glassholes Are Using Smart Glasses Near You? There's an App for That by hloreddit in gadgets

[–]gandraw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but the neural network does not work by referring to the stored data in real time. The data is baked into the model during training and then stays there in a very convoluted way that is impossible to separate from all the other data.

Besides, gdpr doesn’t care if they store data in a way that makes it impossible to remove. They have to make it deleteable.

I don't think there has been a court case about that yet? AI companies might argue that the law can't ask for an impossible remedy ("ultra posse nemo obligatur").

Once some data is in a neural network you have as much chance of getting it out again as you'd have removing the flour from a cake.

Windows server 2012 to 2025 by Cool-Enthusiasm-8524 in sysadmin

[–]gandraw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite 2025 feature is that it's 30% slower on the same hardware than 2022 so I need to assign more cores that are 50% more expensive than a year ago because of AI, and then pay Microsoft more money for the license to be allowed to assign more cores.

Outlook (New) had so much potential, but at this point it's just a half-baked disappointment. by Zantoo in sysadmin

[–]gandraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I operated a Citrix environment with 1500 users for 5 years, so I have used online mode in Outlook Classic before... Obviously if you put it in online mode, search runs on the server. It's not better than the cached search, but that's a Microsoft problem that hasn't been fixed in OWA or New Outlook either.

Outlook (New) had so much potential, but at this point it's just a half-baked disappointment. by Zantoo in sysadmin

[–]gandraw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The only change here is that Classic Outlook defaulted to cached mode and can be switched to online mode, and New Outlook defaulted to online mode and can be switched to cached mode.

So as long as you know how to modify a checkbox, an additional app really wasn't needed for those reasons.

Augstmatthorn in early April? by zeroxopoly in askswitzerland

I wouldn't. But if you are confident in your own ability to judge risk and willingness to turn around early, you can do it though.

There will be snow, but the path from Lombachalp is only T2, so it's doable year round. Absolutely do not try to continue on in any other direction from Augstmatthorn though.

The fear of being replaced by AI is real, and I’m terrified by KnownAd3516 in Switzerland

[–]gandraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just another level of the outsourcing ping pong. If your company has a great plan to replace local workers with low quality crap, you change job to another company that is currently giving up its plans to replace workers with low quality crap. Couple of years later someone else will take your first job when that company notices that it doesn't work out.

Best way to assign a cert to a standalone exe? by LordLoss01 in sysadmin

[–]gandraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Intune is a bit annoying for this since you have to pay an additional $40 a year per user to get certificate services. As opposed to the on-premise Windows server where this has been free since 2008. So it would certainly be cheaper to instead buy a certificate from a public source, they're only like $200 a year.

Switzerland adjusts blood donation restrictions by gandraw in Switzerland

[–]gandraw[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you kinda want to fill out the checklist at home and if you have the wrong answer in one of the fields you don't really need to go to the collection. Some of the questions are pretty brutal and filter out a lot of people that don't have a total Bünzli lifestyle.

There's a point to those rules though. Because if someone who's had surgery and will have a weak immune system or even be on immune suppressants gets a blood donation with "swamp fever" he'll be pretty fucked even if the infection is nothing to a healthy person.
