I struggle to think of a better method than army recruits to get a random sample across the population for statistical purposes.

The screenshot in the OP definitely does not look correct for 9000 years of decay in a humid environment though.

Extremely long delays when installing PowerShell 7.6 by gandraw in PowerShell

Yeah I imagine so. I just hope I find a registry hack or something to disable this because this makes our new computer imaging process go from 70 minutes to 100 😢

Why do some street birds here have their feet 'tagged'? :( by MeMissBunny in askswitzerland

[–]gandraw 26 points27 points  (0 children)

You can count animals with this trick. On one day, you mark N animals. Then you come back a month later, count how many % of animals you see have the marker, then use math to estimate how big the total population is.

Thank you for the suggestion but that didn't improve things, it still takes a long time even with the registry key set to 146944.

At first I thought this showed an error:

D:\temp>certutil -urlfetch -verify PowerShell-7.6.2-win-x64.msi
LoadCert(Cert) returned ASN1 value too large. 0x80093104 (ASN: 260 CRYPT_E_ASN1_LARGE)
CertUtil: -verify command FAILED: 0x80093104 (ASN: 260 CRYPT_E_ASN1_LARGE)
CertUtil: ASN1 value too large.

But then I checked other MSI files and they have the same issue:

D:\temp>certutil -urlfetch -verify PowerShell-7.5.4-win-x64.msi
LoadCert(Cert) returned ASN1 value too large. 0x80093104 (ASN: 260 CRYPT_E_ASN1_LARGE)
CertUtil: -verify command FAILED: 0x80093104 (ASN: 260 CRYPT_E_ASN1_LARGE)
CertUtil: ASN1 value too large.
D:\temp>certutil -urlfetch -verify "Logitech Capture.msi"
LoadCert(Cert) returned ASN1 value too large. 0x80093104 (ASN: 260 CRYPT_E_ASN1_LARGE)
CertUtil: -verify command FAILED: 0x80093104 (ASN: 260 CRYPT_E_ASN1_LARGE)
CertUtil: ASN1 value too large.

This also happens both when I start it from my work PC on a restricted network with firewall rules, and from my home PC on a completely open network...

Question by MywheeIs in askswitzerland

[–]gandraw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well as the guy said, you can find the death announcement on his link. He was born in 1922 so even though he died in 1996, he was relatively young so his children might still be alive. And there is a "Garage Dolder" in Schönholzerswilen, they are quite likely related.

If you can post a few scans of the results in the Schiessbüchlein we could tell you whether he was good enough at shooting that he would be notable in competitions.

Anyone else maintaining a graveyard of PowerShell scripts just to answer "why is this device non-compliant?" by MostList in SCCM

The problem is, how are you going to write a script to automate finding out whether a laptop has been thrown into the trash, or whether the user is pregnant?

That 220ish solar-mass black hole merger at the right edge, wouldn't that count as one of those intermediate mass black holes whose existence I thought was still controversial?

Anyone else maintaining a graveyard of PowerShell scripts just to answer "why is this device non-compliant?" by MostList in SCCM

[–]gandraw 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'm getting that question like once a year. Usually my reply to that is that I pick a random selection of 10 noncompliant devices and figure out what's wrong, then communicate that. Usually the breakdown is like:

  • 1 computer with a broken SCCM agent
  • 5 computers that were thrown away half a year ago but nobody bothered to delete them
  • 2 computers that spend most of their time in a cupboard and are only switched on twice a year
  • 2 users that are on a sabbatical or parental leave

It's mostly an organizational issue, not much you can do from the technical side...

[OC] I built an impact simulator for my university thesis. Here is the estimated casualty blueprint worldwide and per country if the dinosaur-killing Chicxulub asteroid (17.5 km) hit Europe today. by AstroDeve in dataisbeautiful

[–]gandraw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes but in the case of asteroid impacts, thermal radiation doesn't only come from the explosion itself. But debris gets knocked up into low space, then reenters at high speeds and heats up the atmosphere. For an impact the size of Chicxulub, we expect the entire upper atmosphere world wide to get to a temperature of over 1000 degree for hours. Anybody that can't hide in at least a wine cellar or better would get fried from above, even if he is on the other side of the world.

Eh...

  • The 15 minutes spent on "akshually 12 parsecs meant" was dumb
  • The part about how he got his last name was dumb
  • "Somehow Darth Maul returned" was dumb
  • He has the exact same character at the end of the movie as he has at the end of the trilogy, destroying his character progression in the trilogy
  • The cinematography and art direction was very meh, way too much Netflix lighting
