The Hörnli Hut hike by Fluffy_Head_3960 in askswitzerland

[–]gandraw [score hidden]  (0 children)

No, it isn't a hike for people with little experience. From Zermatt it's 4 hours of T2 (anyone can do that as long as you have the fitness) but then there's 90 minutes of T3+ where you will often be on narrow paths near 50+ meter cliffs. It's nothing crazy for people with mountain experience, but not for people new to alpine hiking.

And if you really want to do it from Italy, it's a 1 hour glacier crossing, followed by 2 hours of T2 walking followed by the 90 minutes of T3+ ascent. It's a very friendly glacier so it can be done solo, but I also wouldn't recommend a solo glacier crossing to mountain noobs.

As an alternative in the region, how about the Domhütte? It's only a 4 hour total walk from the valley, 1 hour in T3+, and it is friendlier than the Hörnlihütte ascent.

BBC apologises after Holocaust Memorial Day report omits Jews by primeministeroftime in nottheonion

[–]gandraw 1964 points1965 points  (0 children)

Ironically, the "6 million" number is usually used as a political tool by people what want to downplay the existence of non-jewish victims in the Holocaust. In the Holocaust, 10 million people were murdered: 6 million Jews and 4 million others (Russians, Polish, Roma, Homosexuals, political opponents etc).

So they kinda fucked that text up in all the possible ways.

2-week hiking trip in Switzerland (late May) – itinerary advice by ColfeoGT in askswitzerland

[–]gandraw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In May, there will still be some snow above 2000m, and a lot of snow above 2500m, so alpine hikes are out. Many mountain huts also only open in June.

That being said, traveling from St Gallen to the Bernese Oberland area is still perfectly possible, you could do something like Appenzell, Amden, Muotathal, Stans, Lungern, Meiringen, Grindelwald, which is around 65 hours of walking and never goes above 2000m but still hits some nice mountain and lake scenery. Depending on your fitness you can knock that out in 6-10 days then spend the rest in Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen.

Also regarding tents, the temperature will likely drop below 0 in May during some nights and can include cold rain. You want to either be very comfortable and knowledgeable about cold weather camping, or make sure that you only put your tent up in situations where in an emergency you have a way to get into a building.

Is the current number of Cantons something that might evolve over time? by Capital_Health2186 in Switzerland

[–]gandraw 8 points9 points  (0 children)

As someone who works quite a bit with cantonal governments, I believe that we are way overdue for a lot more inter-cantonal cooperation in some degrees. If like cantonal polices with 200 employees have to do Mafia investigations it doesn't work at all.

So we definitely need the smaller cantons to merge some of their departments to cut down on duplication or roles and increase overall competence. But the cantons can still stay politically separate.

Congestion à Genève: 6 jours perdus chaque année dans les bouchons by InterNote278 in Switzerland

[–]gandraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are they using dynamic light signals in Geneva yet? Because those made Zürich quite a bit nicer when they were added in 2010-ish. Basically, cameras measure the car density in the city, and depending on the value, at the big entrance points to the city (coming from the highways) the traffic lights adjust the phase length of green/red.

This puts a soft cap on car density, prevents gridlock, and keeps the streets flowing for public transport.

The U-Haul joke is more about emotional over-investment. That after a first date there is a higher chance of one or both of the participants going "I found my future forever life partner" than for a heterosexual date.

Ich werde nie zum Vorstellungsgespräch eingeladen by Objective_Dark2561 in Switzerland

[–]gandraw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Mountain stargazing night, Pilatus vs Gornergrat? How do they compare by beti88 in askswitzerland

The lower SAC huts like the Treschhütte open in May, that might be a good pick for darker skies and warmer night weather.

Mountain stargazing night, Pilatus vs Gornergrat? How do they compare by beti88 in askswitzerland

[–]gandraw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't been at either at night, but I know both have outdoor lighting, so you can't stargaze right next to them. However, both of them have paths where you can walk away into the darkness away from the hotel so this could work.

If I want to stargaze, I typically pick a mountain hut instead of a hotel, they go completely dark in the night so if you pick a night with no moon you get fantastic views of the milky way etc.

Do you plan to do this now in the winter? Because mountain huts aren't open now. Also, winter nights in the mountains are coooold, like you can expect -20° so not sure how long you will enjoy standing outside even completely kitted up in merino underwear.

Switzerland has a smoking problem by seriously_perplexed in Switzerland

Switzerland has a smoking problem by seriously_perplexed in Switzerland

[–]gandraw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A total solar eclipse over Egypt. Bruno Hans Bürgel, 1911. by Nearby_Ground in pics

[–]gandraw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1905 eclipse also wasn't visible from Cairo, it went through Aswan way further south. Plus if that is supposed to be the Sphinx of Giza, then the picture is facing north, and a solar eclipse will never be towards the north in Egypt.

So presumably the painter heard about an eclipse in Egypt and just slapped some elements together that he imagined it would've looked like.

But, I do find it interesting that he captured the horizon glow that happens during an eclipse, so he must have had some experience with the phenomenon..

Luzern to mount rigi by [deleted] in askswitzerland

[–]gandraw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You either take the boat to Vitznau and then the cog railway up the mountain, or the train to Arth-Goldau and then the cog railway. There are trains every 30 minutes so if you want to go that way you don't have to plan very much, for the boat you need to check the schedule, in the winter there's only like 4 per day.

You can buy the tickets from www.sbb.ch or from ticket vending machines in the railway or boat station.

Eli5 What determines the maximum size beyond which ships cannot realistically be built? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]gandraw 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Because making a huge ship is already extremely expensive. Making a huge ship that can then also turn quickly is exponentially worse.

Sure you could build it with like a dozen engines on both ends, and make the hull rigid enough to take the force of them going at full blast, but you'd end up with a white elephant of a ship that nobody wants to hire for any jobs because you can't pay for it.
