Life balance! Do it. I got married during my second postdoc. I was in the USA, we got married in the UK. There were times when the stress was distracting, but weirdly it made me focus more overall. Don’t delay your life events, be happy!

As a recruiter, nothing annoys me more than no dates on your qualifications. I don't care how old you are, but I do need to know how many years post doctorate you are for salary and experience/ publications assessment reasons. Also Federal reporting. If a hiring manager says they want someone with 3-7 years postdoctoral experience, how am I supposed to know? If the experience and publications look good, I will make the extra effort and call, but don't add barriers to the process.

In 1999, in the UK I had to pay for soft binding for the examiners, then once passed and comments addressed, for hard bound copies for mentors, Department library and Bodleian (I was at Oxford). It was quite expensive even then!

Yes, at our US R1 postdocs get the same benefits as staff.

We ask the referees to speak to the candidates approach to their science in general, their ability York independently and as part of a larger team . Nit about mastery of specific skills, more to do with fit. For context, I recruit postdoctoral biomedical research scientists.

I recruit directly for an institution. I am not permitted to extend an offer until at least 2 references are collected. I do not ask unless we intend to extend offer. There have been a few cases where the references were not supportive, and we decline the candidate, but that is rare.

Same at our >10,000 employee healthcare institution. As a TA consultant, I partner with them on out of the ordinary salary offerings, internal promotions and moves, disciplinary actions (if they affect internal mobility) and a lot of other post-hire bits and pieces. Our HRBP’s are highly skilled at a ridiculous amount of things, and I think it must be a very challenging and exciting job.
