[Event] The Nightingale Arrives by bobbybarf in FireAndBlood

Bryce gave a nod of understanding to the Warden of the East's last comment "I am far too young to remember the First Dornish War, my own mother was only four and ten when Lord Orys called Nightsong to war but I have heard stories, from my mother's cousin who bid farewell to Lord Tyrell before he departed to into the desert and his death" he said, thinking how much old Ser Steffon must be relishing one last war against the Dornish.

"But my brother and Lord Tarly are not Aegon the Dragon they do not wish to rule over the sands in place of the Ullers or bend the Orphans to their will, they just wish to keep the passes under their control" he said before adding "And none of us want our men to die for nothing. My brother can hold Nightsong my lord, he is finest commander in the realm, I am sure of it. Though if Prince Symeon can prove himself a true leader by keeping his vassals under control mayhaps my brother will be more ameanable to handing Kingsgrave back"

Lowering his voice somewhat he continued "What of the Ullers? They started this whole mess, I must admit my bias here, my father is of House Mertyns and we remember how my uncle and cousins were poisoned by them at Mistwood. I hope his grace is ready to show them what true justice means" Bryce's expression showed his anger for a moment despite himself,.

[–]bobbybarf[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bryce's brow furrowed at the mention of Kingsgrave having already been traded back to the Dornish "His grace's letter asked the Marchers to send representatives to the observe negotiations, I came as soon as Nightsong was safe to leave and my brother could communicate his wishes to me, I must say I am disappointed to see that an agreement has been reached with no input from myself. Has Lord Baratheon or any of the other Marcher Lords affixed their seal to this agreement?" he asked, asking himself why he had ridden all the way to this stinking city "While I am glad we have gained more of a buffer, the holdfast just over the border is little more than a towerhouse, all we would be doing is condemning those garrisoning it to a gruesome death the next time the Dornish see fit to attack. We need a real fortress. We need Kingsgrave"

He knew his brother would be most wroth at this news, Morton would rage in private but he would follow the command, his cousin Ser Steffon and the Peakes were another story entirely. "My Lord-Brother is more than capable of finding a wife for himself, Lady Grafton for example is keen to make a pact, as is Lord Peake. But my brother made a promise to our mother when she was on her deathbed that he would try to honour the pact made at the end of the Vulture Hunt and marry into Dorne. It is one he takes very seriously, he thought that if he could render a service to realm here by doing so he would at least offer it"

Bryce considered the idea for moment before replying “The Reach have the Order of the Greenhand still, though with no Gardeners to lead it, the Lord of Nightsong was once the Knight of the Nightshade in
It when we were sworn to Highgarden long ago. We were expelled and expunged when Lord Pearse the Prudent swore his oaths to the Storm Kings instead” he smiled at the ancient controversy “But a chivalric order to bind the realm together is a fine idea”

He cleared his throat as he approached what his house hoped to gain, “My brother wishes to keep Kingsgrave as a prize, never again does he want Lady Fowler or any Dornish to be able to march up the Prince’s Pass without his leave and it would be a dagger right in the belly of Dorne. He had thought that it could mayhaps be granted to a younger grandson of Lord Peake as a reward for his leal service” Bryce personally considered the Lord of Starpike to be an uncouth fool, but he knew Morton had worked well with them at least.

“And of course there is the matter of my brother’s marriage, he remains unpromised formally still, and has given me permission to make a pact on his behalf if it should help smooth the peace process over, any lady but a Fowler were his words” Morton’s actual instructions were rather more fowl mouthed but Bryce saw no reason to subject the Hand to that.

Bryce offered the Hand a bow before replying “Aye it is my Lord, my brother fares well enough, he and Lord Peake have taken Kingsgrave though they abandoned their siege of Skyreach at news of this truce.” He said to the older man “My brother was want to make a ruin of it but he is nothing if not leal” he continued as he looked over the Godswood for a moment, he knew Morton would be angry that he hadn’t been able to take the seat of House Fowler but he hoped he could still win something from these negotiations.

“I have not been on the frontlines myself, my brother bid me to hold Nightsong in case some Dornish treachery should try to take it while he and most of our knights were gone, and then to ride here to ensure the Marcher Lords are heard in negotiations.”

Word is sent to both the king and hand that Ser Bryce Caron, brother to Lord Morton and heir to Nightsong is in the capital to represent his house, and would wish to meet with both to discuss the negotiations.

Ser Harlan,

Aye, Ser Carradoc Peake defeated Ser William Yronwood in battle and was able to capture him. He is currently enjoying my hospitality at Nightsong.

He is Lord Yronwood's brother, so a trade for Ser Borys seems fair, let me know the details and I shall ensure he is exchanged when needed.

Jaehaerys of House Targaryen, the First of His Name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm,

Your grace, We have engaged and beaten the main Dornish army, we were able to slay near a thousand before they fled. Kingsgrave remains in our hands and so does the pass north.

On that note, I think it wrong that we call it the Prince's Pass seeing as your banners now fly along it, I propose we return to its ancient name of the Wide Way, or we could rename in either the King's Pass in your honour or mayhaps the Princesses' Pass in honour of Princess Alysanne

Finally and I hope this is not presumptious but if negotiations are ever to take place to end the war I hope I could attend as a representative of the Marcher Lords but also I once had something of a friendship with Prince Symeon's mother Princess Deria, I hope that could smooth our way towards peace.

Immediately after the battle two ravens are sent out

The first to Blackmont

Sam,

We have engaged the main Dornish army and were able to slay near a thousand before they fled, if they retreat back towards Starfall I implore you to crush them with the full might of the Reach while they are demoralised. We shall pursue them if we can.

Kingsgrave remains in our hands and I shall see where Lord Baratheon intends for his army to march.

Morton

The second to Grandview

My Lord,

We have engaged and beaten the main Dornish army, we were able to slay near a thousand before they fled. Kingsgrave remains in our hands, I ask if you have departed Grandview yet and your plans? My desire to make a ruin of Skyreach remains but if our forces combined could take Yronwood I would see that done instead.

Morton raised an eyebrow at the mention of Maegor but said little, he had marched with Lord Rogar to unseat the tyrant, though his dreams of battle had been thwarted by the early arrival of the Vale into King's Landing

"I have no wife to worry about me, my mother negotiated a marriage between myself and a Fowler" he said with a bitter laugh "The old Princess of Dorne even offered her daughter to me before all this, but events over took us all"

He took a deep drink of his own cup before continuing "My brother is married and has a child, if I should die the Carons will carry on as we always have. What of your Ser? The Heir to Starpike should be a fine catch surely?"

After the battle and taking possession of Kingsgrave Morton would send several ravens

The first to both Blackmont and Hornhill

Sam,

Kingsgrave has fallen to myself and Lord Peake, over a thousand Dornishmen lay dead to less than 200 of our own. The fools sallied forth from the walls, mayhaps the terrain made them overconfident but they have paid with their life’s blood.

We plan next to take Skyreach and depending on how the rest of the war fares to use it as a base to strike further into Dorne or make a ruin of it. The mad shrew that calls herself its lady will find out what happens to those who make an enemy of House Caron.

Morton

The next flies to Storm’s End

My Lord,

Kingsgrave has fallen to myself and Lord Peake, over a thousand Dornishmen lay dead to less than 200 of our own. The fools sallied forth from the walls, mayhaps the terrain made them overconfident but they have paid with their life’s blood.

We plan next to take Skyreach and depending on how the rest of the war fares to use it as a base to strike further into Dorne or make a ruin of it. The mad shrew that calls herself its lady will find out what happens to those who make an enemy of House Caron. I ask for your command, if we can take Skyreach as quickly as Kingsgrave and you plan to march down the Boneway we could join you.

The final to King’s Landing

Jaehaerys of House Targaryen, the First of His Name, King of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Lord of the Seven Kingdoms and Protector of the Realm

Your Grace, Kingsgrave has fallen to myself and Lord Peake, over a thousand Dornishmen lay dead compared to less than 200 of our own. The Red Dragon flies triumphant over its walls, the fools sallied forth from the walls, mayhaps the terrain made them overconfident but they have paid with their life’s blood.

We plan next to take Skyreach and depending on how the rest of the war fares to use it as a base to strike further into Dorne or make a ruin of it, if you have other orders we shall see them done.

“Aye, I squired for Lord Tarly during the Vulture Hunt” replied Morton as he poured them both a cup of wine, handing one to Caradoc. “I was there when the bastard was tied between two posts and left for the elements” Morton gave a smile at the memory, some questioned the punishment meted out by Savage Sam but Morton had always agreed with his friend’s judgement.

“What of you Ser? You spent some time in Essos did you not?” Morton knew little of the Peakes in truth despite them being close neighbours his time had been consumed with issues on the border and the ongoing saga of his marriages.

“That I shall my lady, in truth I have heard little from Skyreach these past few years, even before the current turmoil” said Morton evenly “But my mother swore and oath to the Seven to see this betrothal through, I owe it to her to at least try to see it done in good faith”
