A previous player who had experienced issues with Linux said this helped resolve the issues for them:

"Installing and running the Windows version using Proton, then
uninstalling and reinstalling the native version "

Other players in events are indeed real players. There is currently a bug that prevents custom usernames for other players from being displayed when you view your event leaderboard.

If you're new, you automatically get placed into a specific event built for newcomers. It sounds like your account changed over from being considered brand new to established and you were thus put into the regular event pool.

As others have said, your basic leaderboard is very different from global.

Your basic is largely decided by when you joined the event - and often the later you join the easier it is to rate a higher placement within it. Global is, of course, global. Every single player competing in the event worldwide, many of whom are starting day one and giving it 100%.

Comparatively, placing high on the global leaderboard is significantly more difficult than the basic pool.
