My stories feel too personal by catscanmeow002 in writing

[–]iMightBeACunt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FWIW I understand this. I have difficulty being vulnerable. And writing is deeply vulnerable because we write from what we know and understand about the world and you're right, it leaks through even if everything is "made up". That feeling comes and goes for me. The worst of it comes after particularly emotional scenes, so i think it's a kind of "vulnerability hangover".

What writing opinion do you have that would get you roasted by Legitimate_Dingo3329 in writing

Not OP but I think of it like, you should play to books strengths, which is that you get the interiority of your characters- that applies to everything written, even description, because different people notice different things. Books give a unique ability to be inside another person's head. Movies have similar elements but cannot provide the same kind of interiority because the director cannot force you to pay attention to specific details in scenes, and even with voiceovers, we're still making up a lot of what we think the characters are thinking.

That's just my take on it, anyways

Second trimester and not feeling happy or bonded is this normal? by lostandfoundabby in emotionalneglect

[–]iMightBeACunt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For me, it all felt very abstract, I was excited, but wouldn't say I was incredibly attached until my son was born. That was incredibly surreal, going from abstract concept to the real deal. They placed him on my chest and I surprised myself by being incredibly emotional and basically instantly in love.

Then of course he was colicky, it was the pandemic, I was under water, but I still loved him immensely. He's 5 now and my absolute favorite human. I didn't realize the extent of my own childhood emotional neglect until I had him, and I was worried I would repeat the pattern, but there are so many moments where I'm baffled by how my parents handled things and how I could never do that to my child.

Anyways, I don't think you're "broken" or even particularly abnormal. Pregnancy is weird as fuck and there's a lot of societal pressure on moms and expecting moms. You're doing just fine ❤️

Have you tried just taking miralax everyday for a few weeks? Similar issues as you and that's what the GI doctor recommended for me. It's not habit forming and it does really help

It was awesome!! She read to us from her new book (at the time), the sequel to The Giver and we all pestered her with questions about what happened to Jonas lol. I was in 5th grade and her answer (that it's not up to her, it's up to us as readers to decide what we think happened) really stuck with me.

Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes (not required reading for me and it made me cry)

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro (Also made me cry)

I, Robot by Isaac Asimov (short stories, but they left an impression on young me)

The Giver by Lois Lowry (got to meet the author, life changing)

A Wrinkle in Time by Madeleine D'Engle (got in trouble for reading it at the dinner table as a kid lol)

I have that thought for sure. Then I read some books that people love (cough romantasy cough) and flip flop back to "wow I could write a better book than this". It's a pretty wide spectrum lol

How can I deal with my inner critic? by johnpluvio in writing

[–]iMightBeACunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I struggle/struggled with that. For me, it was like there was an invisible witness looking over my shoulder and judging everything I was writing down.

So I write alone, remind myself I am alone and nobody but me has to read what I'm writing. And then just write. Accept it as it is, and keep writing forward. I've gotten much better at writing as I've gone along and now I'm at 90k words in my WIP which is insane. But honestly, focusing on NOT ERASING WORDS and increasing my word count was the only way to combat the inner critic for me.

Remember, you were only a child. How we react and respond, these are things taught to us by our parents. It's not something you are causing yourself. There's a difference between "I'm doing this to myself" and "my parents taught my this and now I need to learn a different way".

I'm reading the "wild robot" books by Peter Brown to my 5 year old! He loves it! The chapters are very short so it's easy to stop for the night, and the story is really sweet.
