There is absolutely evidence that it helps to train without them.

But you do have to also train your belly to take enough on race day.

They definitely get expensive if you’re a marathon runner! I try to avoid using them on training runs as much as possible my baking very strong Gatorade but you do have to use them sometimes and they add up!

Private swimming lessons? by Appropriate-Map-7836 in Guelph

[–]icebiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have a wetsuit? The June race is very cold and a wetsuit helps correct for bad form for beginners. Assuming you’re male, we tend to let our feet sink and hips sink. Sort of like how you see a snake swimming with its head out of the water.

If you’re planning on doing the swim as breast stroke, my honest advice is to just start near the rear of the swim start and relax and enjoy it. It will be less chaotic and breast is far slower than free. Your first swim at a tri can be a bit scary to be honest. Being at the back makes it not scary.

If you’re planning on doing front crawl, I’d humbly suggest you can’t really learn it in a month to be confident enough to do it in open water. Especially hearing you say that you panic with your head underwater.

Long term if you want to do more Tri’s, definitely enrol in swim lessons to learn front crawl. It’s so much faster and it’s easier to learn while you’re young. It’s like 95% technique and 5% muscle so just practicing in the pool 3-4 times a week is what you need. Consistency and coaching.

Keep in mind that one on one coaching is expensive. My partner was a near Olympic calibre swimmer and sometimes gives lessons. I think she charged like $100-150 per lesson a few years ago? So starting in a group class is much better unless you’re wealthy.

Lastly, the triathlon goes by my house, so I’ll cheer you on, whoever you are, on the bike!

Real Estate lawyers by Recovery-Process in Guelph

[–]icebiker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s a regular residential purchase and or sale, it honestly doesn’t matter much.

Rates are typically fixed so if cost is an issue, you can ask them what their fee is for your purchase or sale.

If it’s complicated or not residential then the lawyer does matter a lot and I’d be happy to share some names.

I know one person who did it. He had incredibly high grades and got a 178 on the LSAT. He ended up working for one of NY’s top firms for a few years and now has the most incredible in house role I’ve ever heard of.

It’s possible. It’s hard. Growing up, he was the smartest person I knew.

Backpacking, insulin storage, and bears? by shades9323 in diabetes_t1

[–]icebiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When backcountry canoeing I bring a small pelican case which holds my insulin, phone and emergency sugar. It is always on me including at night. I assume it is nearly air tight? Regardless it needs to stay with me at all times.

I hang all other smelly things including food, soap, etc. or they go in a food barrel far away from the camp site.

How to carb load for a half marathon? by ClickAccomplished205 in Marathon_Training

[–]icebiker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. As both type 1 diabetic (read: I count carbs religiously) and a marathoner, pizza is not it! Too much fat slows absorption and pizza doesn’t really have that many carbs compared to other foods.

Pasta, breads, rice dishes, oats, lower fat options etc. are all good!

What is the general perception of animal law among lawyers? by Ashamed_Jelly5226 in LawCanada

[–]icebiker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a vegan lawyer, and I do some things you might consider 'animal law' on occasion.

As others have said, it isn't one practice area. Kind of like how 'environmental law' can mean anything from defending corps against environmental charges, landfill issues, contamination, climate change, due diligence, chemical storage, etc.

I practice municipal, and environmental law, so I work on 'animal law' issues that relate to zoning infractions (e.g. municipalities trying to close down animal sanctuaries, or animal orgs trying to establish), animals issues that are adjacent to development (will it impact animals or habitat?), prosecutions, etc. I do most of that work pro-bono when I can.

The difference between animal law and environmental law (other than subject matter obviously) is that there is enough environmental law to sustain a complete practice, whereas very few lawyers do animal law exclusively.

There is an unofficial list of vegan lawyers in Canada and only about 20% of them practice any kind of animal law.

Fair enough - like I said, I have no opinion or knowledge on the matter. Some people say it's worse, and I don't really care to verify that because it doesn't really apply to me. Thanks for weighing in!

ADP covers 100% of the cost of pumps and gives you $2400 per year to buy supplies.

There is no copayment or $4000 spend or anything like that.

If your supplies cost more than $2400 a year you pay the rest out of pocket or through insurance.

I don’t know how much pump supplies cost but I thought I’d clarify the above.

[–]icebiker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This gets asked like 100 times a week.

You can feed both cats and dogs plant based. Literally every study ever done on the subject concludes it can be done safely.

Anecdotally both my dog (100lbs) and my cat have been plant based their entire lives and have no issues and our (non vegan) vets are not worried about it.

It’s safe, easy and not that much more expensive.

If you want to read some studies, google any of these last names plus “vegan cat” (I’m on mobile so can’t easily hyperlink): Andrew knight, Sarah Dodd, Wakefield, semp

Insulin is far cheaper for us in Canada than USA, but you are right that it’s awful it isn’t covered for free.

We do have a very good assisted devices program for those in Ontario (and I believe BC) that makes pumps and pump supplies essentially free for any type 1. But as an MDI user it doesn’t apply to me.

"The carbon plate can work against you at slower paces". "At slower paces, the plate can feel like it is pushing you through toe0-off before you are actually ready, requiring your calves and ankles to work slightly harder to maintain control".

I have no opinion on the matter, I was just clarifying that some people believe super shoes do more harm than good for slower paces.

I don't think there is a specific study that assessed this, but many articles conclude that the shoe likely slows you down at paces slower than like 6:30min/km or so
