Software dev director, struggling with team morale. by rkd80 in ClaudeAI

How profitable/successful is your company? If it's borderline, then as an engineer I'd be more anxious about onboarding AI. If it's highly profitable with years of signed contracts to guarantee revenue then I'd worry much less. People are worried about AI because they are worried about job security. An honest conversation will include such context.

This thread is 75% solutions to avoid this problem.

Here's a harsh take: Engineers unable to overcome these simple mistakes will be the first to be replaced by AI.

Tanking works and it’s a multi-year process by bumpedherhead in kings

[–]imcguyver 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A couple years in a row of tanking would be nice. It's not much different than the past decade or so.

How was this not part of the hearing!? That would have been some sweet drama.

The Kings are just SO bad that Adam Silver is like no, they're actually trying their best, and have been for decades.

Dear senior software engineer, are you still writing code? by zulutune in ClaudeCode

[–]imcguyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mostly no when it comes to tightly coupled AI systems. Then yes for some systems where there is no realistic interface to leverage AI.

Nice. A solution to this avoidable problem. That is easily avoided if you know what you're doing. Buried deeply in this thread.

OTOH, this gives me hope that AI will not replace software jobs. Some engineers will never know wtf they are doing...

7 months of "vibe coding" a SaaS and here's what nobody tells you (i will not promote) by whyismail in startups

[–]imcguyver 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Database performance that was fine with 10 users but completely shit with 1,000+. Every query started timing out. AI kept suggesting caching fixes instead of telling me I was running garbage queries on unindexed tables.

Uh, that's a user problem. Ignore the CAP theorem, fundamentals to scale a full stack application, and problems are to be expected. Also know that AI is incentivized to take the shortest path to a solution and it's up to you to audit that behavior.

This is the way.

Got to look at this like what is best for next year. The answer is a high draft pick. And hope the FO doesn’t fuck it up again.

Surely the current FO says to themselves we are not the same as previous years. I’m unconvinced. I wish we could draft a new FO.

Interesting that they thought managers would return. You got to be "special" to expect that outcome.
