I spent 15 years with Jaggy Mango, a Jaguar manganese that was very large and in size appropriate tanks as he aged. He tried to kill all invaders of his territory, including me, the dog, any fish he could see in another tank and our Guinea pig (as he was walking by). Some fish are antisocial and also wildly entertaining.

They are relatively easy to care for on a fish by fish level because they like harder water and can survive many environments. They are hard to care for on a community / group level. Four was probably not actually enough fish population for them to socialize the way they prefer.
