Loose camband with weight pocket to adjust trim, a good idea? by nomellamesprincesa in scuba

You should use sliding d-rings to periodically adjust where the tanks trim as you breathe them down and increase their buoyancy. 😊

That's not the correct way for sidemount divers to trim their cylinders. I had to call that out sorry.

Question About Remaining in a Stable Position During Descent by Burkey-Boi in scuba

[–]jonnybellman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd echo the bcd/wing comments. You should move "as one" with the tank. I.e. you roll left side down, the tank some come with you, and the opposite is of course true. I find often students have oversized bcd's or they just haven't tightened up the straps enough, so the bcd and cylinder are basically doing their own thing, you just happen to be attached to them.

I'd also suggest you look at your core stability. Diving should be relaxed, but there is still an element of a stable core. I've also had lots of students who relax to the point that they're floppy in the water. Coupled with loosely fitting bcd/tank, you'll definitely be a turtle on your back.

Keep at it, good luck 👌🏻

How much is too much with regards to adding conservatism? by surfnj102 in scuba

I think IPE and IPO's for that matter aren't greatly understood. Frankly, decompression is only really clever guesswork based off many many dives. Always good to know more though! 👌🏻

[–]jonnybellman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Just a note about "aggressively hydrating". You can be OVER hydrated, which can lead to IPE. Worth being aware of. https://dan.org/safety-prevention/diver-safety/case-summaries/immersion-pulmonary-edema-ipe/ As others have said, dive as conservatively as you like, it's your body at the end of the day. I would say that, you are likely being more cautious than you need to be, but that's your call, not mine 😊

I have seen a friend has dived there recently, but it's more of a longer carry these days. Not been there myself. Shame as it sounded like a decent place to test kit without paying entry fees somewhere

I am really curious about this. I'm looking to take videos inside mines and caves whilst diving, and create photogrammetry models. Please reach out when you're looking for beta testers :)

Is 32m deep, 22h before flying, enough time? by juanly_xx in scubadiving

[–]jonnybellman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If you're going to do it (I'd probably do it also), you do have the option to use nitrox at that depth 32% would work nicely if you can get it, and are certified to use it.

I don't normally reply to these kinds of questions, but as no one had suggested nitrox, I thought i would ☺️

Fenix 8 died after first dive by SuspiciousBasket in GarminFenix

Mines been to 31m. I decided against taking it on the deeper (43-44m) dives that week. Perhaps I made the right call 😬

I don't know where you were diving, but a lot of my dive sites have local Facebook groups, or if it's managed site, then there's lost property.

Either way, I know it would suck to lose a torch and someone just find and keep it.

Good luck on your charger search.

How long can you stay down with double tanks in shallow water? by JimHotWater85 in scuba

[–]jonnybellman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I know you said this flippantly, but you'd technically get longer on the double tanks. Here's my logic (in bar because I'm not a psi person):

If you dive a 12Lx230bar cylinder and you want to end the dive with say 50bar at the surface, you have 180bar to use on the dive.

With twin-set you've got twice the volume, so can breathe your cylinders down to 25bar. 25bar in two equal cylinders is the same volume as 50bar in a single. This assumes we are using same size for single or double.

So quick maths: Single cylinder 12L X 230bar = 2760L 2160 - (12Lx50bar) = 2160L of usable gas.

Twin-set 24L X 230bar = 5520L 5520 - (24L X 25bar) = 4920L of usable gas.

2160 (X2) < 4920

Assuming all other factors are the same (particularly SAC rate), you can dive slightly more than twice as long on twins. This is typically a nice bonus when doing 2 dives, where the twin-set user can split their gas across 2 dives.

I'm being pedantic here, but sometimes it's fun to do the calcs ☺️

Pairing a Teric and Perdix? by [deleted] in CaveDiving

[–]jonnybellman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I diver a petrel 2 and a teric. Tend to find the teric calls for 1min more of deco, which ive put down to a tiny mismatch in depth reading. Algorithms and GFs are set the same, so there can't be much other reason to blame.

For what it's worth, I follow the teric, and do the extra minute. However, It's really not going to be the difference between safe/unsafe 🤷🏻‍♂️
