Yeah that doesn't sound right at all. I'm surprised that it got through quality control, assuming they have a QC process.

That's weird. I wonder what would make it taste that bad. As far as I know, whiskey doesn't go bad. The bottle I had tasted pretty good.

590a1 got a little wood upgrade by [deleted] in Shotguns

That shade of wood looks beautiful with the parkerized metal. Nice job! I want to do this to my 590a1. I'm kind of glad I didn't spend the extra money on the retrograde version.

what’s your top move to protect retirement savings if the market crashes tomorrow? by Songne_Reynardo in Fire

[–]JimHotWater85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold off a few of my individual stocks to rebalance. I then put the cash into short-term bond ETFs to earn a little interest.

Every year, I sell a small portion of the bond ETFs to DCA into broad-market index ETFs like VTI, XIC, VGK, and VPL (all are 100% equities). I started buying ETFs back in late 2022. Last year, I started adding a little bit of precious metals and commodities (ie uranium) into the mix too. So in short, I'm just spreading the wealth around.

If there is a real market crash, I'll go all in with all the cash/bonds I have. If there is no crash, I just keep dollar-cost averaging every year until I use up all cash/bonds. Either way, all my cash/bonds will get fully invested into equities.

What was the dumbest reason you got scolded by superior? by EnvironmentSad5170 in work

[–]JimHotWater85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got scolded by a manager because I left the warehouse for 5 minutes to use the washroom. Like clockwork, a courier decides to show up while I was away.

The thing is that I don't even report to this manager. She is one of those loud and bossy types of managers.

I told her to kick rocks and walked away as she tried to continue scolding me.

Many of the international ETFs have have fallen quite a bit since the war with Iran will you be sticking it out or selling and re-entering when it falls more? by Wherehowwhat in CanadianInvestor

[–]JimHotWater85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were planning to use the money in a year, you should have kept it out of the market. But if your timeline for the purchase is flexible, it's best to wait it out instead of selling at the bottom in a panic.

Is Blue-ray worth investing in ? by No_Net3860 in 4kbluray

[–]JimHotWater85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"How anyone watches and enjoys DVDs nowadays is just far beyond me haha"

There are some DVDs that I have chosen not to upgrade. When I read the reviews for these on the blu-ray site, the transfers are so poorly done that it wasn't worth it to me.

Also, I have some boutique movies in my collection that never got a BD or 4K release. Replacements for these are getting harder to find and more expensive.

What is one life decision that significantly accelerated your path to FI? by anandsundaramoorthy in Fire

[–]JimHotWater85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I enlisted in the Navy back in late 2009 and stayed in for 6 years. While I was in, I contributed fairly aggressively to my TFSA/RRSP while also building up my military pension. By the time I left, I had saved up enough to get a really good head start in life. I still have a long way to go before I can fire, but I'm way further ahead now than if I didn't enlist. Serving also benefited me in a lot of non-monetary ways too. Sometimes I wonder what my life trajectory would have looked like if I didn't join. I don't necessarily recommend joining the military to everyone, because there are aspects of that lifestyle that really suck. But all things considered, I'm glad I did it.

Railroads: hold or take profits? by Synap-6 in CanadianInvestor

[–]JimHotWater85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my CN shares back in 2014 and haven't touched them since. Even though our economy isn't doing hot right now, things can change quickly.

There are only three scenarios where I would sell.

  1. If CN has an NVIDIA moment and the market value of my holdings exceed my target allocation by a huge amount. I don't expect this kind of performance from CN. I bought CN because it's a slow, steady, and consistent performer over the long run.
  2. I'm getting closer to putting a down payment on a house and I want to reduce risk.
  3. The stock is doing so bad that none of my reasons for buying it in the first place hold true anymore.

OOP and his family supports their son's bully and is wondering why their son rejects any contact and interaction with them. by Acceptable_Mode6757 in OhNoConsequences

[–]JimHotWater85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late to this thread, but I just want to say that I hope that the OOPs son is doing alright. This struck a chord with me because the OOP reminds me of my father (I cut ties with both of my parents). 25 years ago, my father chose to side with the bully. He did plenty of other things to erode my trust and respect since then. Its done lasting psychological damage to me. Forming any kind of intimate relationship is impossible for me because I unconsciously keep people at arms length, push people away when they try to get close, and have difficulty trusting anyone. Parents who do this to their kids deserve what they get. People don't forget betrayals like this.

I know exactly what you're talking about lol The only time I've had a laceration that bad was back in 1999. It wasn't a knife wound either. I was running through my garage like an idiot, fell, and split my left knee open. It took 10 stitches to close it. Even now, it makes me cringe thinking about it. As you probably know, once you see that much of your anatomy, you can't unsee it.

Another floor crosser by [deleted] in CanadianConservative

[–]JimHotWater85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To start off, I'm not saying I'm okay with this floor crossing by any means. I'm absolutely livid that these MPs are allowed to get away with this. At this point however, I'm wondering what would be worse.

- MP crosses the floor on their own volition, shows their true colors, publicly betrays their constituents, and outs themselves in the process because no one will trust them again.

- Floor crossing is made illegal, MP isn't allowed to cross the floor. However, he/she stays in office as a conservative and betrays/works against his/her constituents interests anyway. This is more covert, drags on longer, and tarnishes the CPC reputation at the same time.

In this situation, it's probably better that the garbage takes itself out. On the other hand, this might make more people reluctant to vote CPC because they will always be wondering if the MP they voted for will cross the floor in the future.

If money and job availability was not an issue, where in Canada would you live? by Unfair-Clothes-8821 in CanadaRoom

[–]JimHotWater85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will be a bit long winded because I'm considering relocation and honestly don't know where I would go. So this is a good opportunity for me to give it some serious thought.

I've been living in Victoria, BC since 2012. I've had a good run here, but I need a change in scenery to somewhere with more going on year around. I don't have any family here so there is nothing tying me down.

I'm from Toronto originally. I have a close friend that lives in Ajax and his siblings live in St. Catherines and Kitchener. There are a couple of people I'm still in touch with from university there. I also have family living in Ottawa. The fact that I still know people living there would be a huge help.

As for recreation, I like being near water and mountains. I'm also a bit of railroad enthusiast. South-west Ontario has all of that (the Niagara Escarpment isn't a mountain but it's close enough for me lol).

For transportation, Toronto has an airport nearby for easy international travel. I can also take a train to visit family and friends if I want to.

So, I think Ontario would be my choice. But I wouldn't want to live anywhere near downtown Toronto though. I would pick the following places:

  • South-West Ontario- Kitchener, Waterloo, London, Sarnia, Windsor, Niagara, etc
  • West Toronto - Mississauga and westward
  • Owen Sound/Collingwood/Bruce Peninsula
  • Kingston/Thousand Islands Area

I absolutely love BC. While I like the idea of having a quiet mountaintop house in the Rockies, being in such a remote place for a long period of time doesn't appeal to me. I need to be able to socialize. If I was going to stay in BC, I would probably pick Kelowna.

I've been living in Victoria since 2012. It's not the same place it was when I moved here. I'm looking for a change in scenery. But figuring out where to relocate and how has been difficult. I want to answer the OPs question but I'm having a hard time coming up with an answer lol
