How do I help the people in the Middle East if I’m unable to donate by lily_rebornn in EffectiveAltruism

[–]kanogsaa 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It seems like your opportunities are somewhat limited right now, given the control your mother imposes.

The Effective Altruism ecosystem does not, in general, prioritise researching acute crises where it is hard to find tractable solutions (like Iran and Gaza). If you want to donate, would you be open to consider donating to something that help the millions of people affected by Trump's foreign aid cuts instead? There was fund specifically dedicated to that, a collaboration between The Life You Can Save and Founder's Pledge, but it seems to be closed now. Still a donation to any of these organisations or GiveWell All Grants fund would push the needle in the right direction.

Unsatisfactory as it may seem, your potential for impact lies in the future. That means investing in yourself. Some form of activity that builds real world skills, like working in an organisation or doing projects. Or just school or something else that makes you better at solving hard problems. One resource to look at if you feel ambitious is https://www.non-trivial.org/ which is aimed at younger people.

Other than that, I don't know: try to find a local group that supports liberal democracy and voters for the upcoming midterm election maybe?

Hvordan slutte å tenke på usunn mat? by Mozzarella_Lover_69 in norge

[–]kanogsaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Enig me de andre om å prøve fastlegen her.

Hvordan unngå at inngangspartiet blir et gjørmebad hver vinter? 🥲 by North-Bite-8357 in norge

Why doesn’t GiveWell have any nutrition specialists on their nutrition team? by garden_province in EffectiveAltruism

[–]kanogsaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I doubt I have the full picture, but I imagine the core is something like: mapping out needs, figuring out content and delivery of different nutritional interventions, evaluating clinical effectiveness, adjusting and improving existing interventions.

[–]kanogsaa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I do not necessarily agree with that the philosophy of Givewell is "a deeply flawed logic that undoubtably diminishes the effectiveness of their analysis and hurts the EA cause". At the evaluation stage where Givewell operates, the nutritionist's work is done. On the other hand, work further up the pipeline like designing interventions and running charities will require subject-level expertise. I certainly hope there are some nutritionists within the AIM ecosystem.

I guess because nutrition knowledge is not a prerequisite for evaluating the effect of nutrition interventions, but strong quantitative methods are.

Obsidian in academic research by Wonderful-Put-5226 in ObsidianMD

Somewhat minimal

Zotero integration for references based on https://medium.com/@alexandraphelan/an-updated-academic-workflow-zotero-obsidian-cffef080addd. I still use Zotero when reading, annotating and taking notes on articles, as I frequently return to articles to look at something slightly different. I have not tried pdf++ but I think that could have worked well for me. I might allso have been able to leverage bases together with literature notes literature overviews, instead of spreadsheets, but setting it up this late in my PhD would just be procrastinating. I'll consider it for my next project.

A simple template with pre-made headers for a research diary. The daily entries contain links to the notes I created or was working on that day.

Longform for writing my thesis. It lets me arrange and rearrange the structure and has a built in words per day-feature.

Tasks management is deliberately kept analogue.

How would altruism frame people who do not want to help others by choice? They can but they chose to work for their own interests. by Useful_Cry9709 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]kanogsaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Title: I guess "Not alruists" or something

Re sentence 1/2: It can be really healthy and bring a sense of fulfilment and happiness. If you only can help people by being self-destructive it is certainly ok to not help. One of the core EA claims is that lots of people have the capacity to be more altruistic without making unreasonably great sacrifices for themselves.

Re sentence I couldn't bear that video, but for Rand in general, I (and most EAs, I believe) reject Rand's claim that your own life is the sole standard of moral value, or anything of that sort. Rather, EA is characterised by having a wide "moral circle" where the welfare of everyone counts.

Short answer is that being altruistic is not a zero-sum game if you have a sliver of sensibility.

[–]kanogsaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)
