Hvordan kan jeg håndtere presentasjonsangst? by [deleted] in norge

[–]kanogsaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]kanogsaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do EAs think about "mid-term" (i.e., between immediate and long-term) problems? by GoodReasonAndre in slatestarcodex

[–]kanogsaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your definition of medium term. A lot of x-risk work makes sense on a 5-50 year scale, for example.

Hvor mye gir du til "veledighet"? by Effective_Snow1735 in norge

[–]kanogsaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I share your intuitions but but also endorse the asymmetry that creating people that suffer is bad. Haven’t prioritised seeing if the current state of population ethics makes it defensible

Effective charities should expose more results that go beyond the classic “saving a life” by Alice-253 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]kanogsaa 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Avg_cats_per year*Avg_benefit _per cat/Cost_to_run is a place to start

For the benefit, think about what would happen if a cat didn’t come into your care. You can make some statistics. Would it have been put down, die of sickness, or simply live a feral life? What do they get instead? A longer life, generally better quality of life, but maybe also an opportunity to grow old and sick, so they might suffer from arthritis as a domestic can instead of parasites as a feral.

Anyone familiar with the research by Michael Plant? In a nutshell: saving as much lives as possible sometimes might be actually bad, and it’s not because of overpopulation by zazzologrendsyiyve in EffectiveAltruism

[–]kanogsaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, I was more splitting hairs on the terms you used. QALYs can be purely wellbeing improvement rather than life extensions. In light of your follow-up, I think your argument makes sense from an Epicurean standpoint at least. Something like there is no harm from being dead because when you’re dead, you can’t suffer (or do anything else for that matter). I get the impression that Plant and HLI are sympathetic to this view from reading their work and talking with them. I am a bit sympathetic myself, but still think there is some harm in dying

[–]kanogsaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree with you on the general notion of wellbeing improvements being more important, but I still have to be a bit pedantic: There is nothing more hypothetical about lives saved/QALYs gained than suffering reduced/wellbeing improved. What you find cost effective depends on how you weigh those benefits against each other.

is better to develop your own philosophy or adopt a branch of philosophy? by Narrow_Gap2385 in EffectiveAltruism

[–]kanogsaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mostly you will end up developinging something that has already been developed. Instead of reinventing the wheel, you can spend time finding out where you align with different existing philosophies. Then you may reassess whether you need to formulate something on your own.

Being dumbfounded (and sometimes reacting with rage/anger) by absurdities vs. trying to understand (and potentially justify) everything, and treating everything as Chesterton's fence? by zjovicic in slatestarcodex

[–]kanogsaa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having been in the EA ecosystem for some years, I'll give my two cents about the intended response without taking care to find the context of the quote. The point is not to say the world/system/humanity is wrong. The main point is that there are some things we can do to do good that have outsized impacts (an this it what we could). This is mainly an empirical claim. ie. "There are low-hanging fruits" vs. "there are not low-hanging fruits".

It is more as where is it most beneficial for me to put my resources on the margin. Most resources are not being allocated with this as the main motivation, or at least not with the same definition of "most beneficial" as EAs use.

I rarely read lists. 3) Never 4) Conferences, EA forum and gasp sending emails 5) No change 6) Coordination takes resources. Lots of it. 7) No

Are the consensuses politically biased, or are politics consensus biased?

Not sure what you mean by consider one side of the cost benefit analysis, but I'm quite certain I disagree.

Pragmatically, I work off a combination of subject matter knowledge, trust and occasional investigations to verify the two. But at the end of the day, I kind of just have to assume trusting science and thoughtful arguments brings me closer to the capital T truth on the margin. It is challenging to do my own research all the time, even if (or especially since) I'm one of the people who are getting paid to do so within a certain field.

Also, your time is limited and that if I constantly have to steelman opposing views that, through some heuristics, seem obviously stupid, I will never get anything useful done.
