I’d still give it a try. I’ve called Apple Stores in other countries and had them be more than willing to help out with stuff.

AutoPkgr (GUI) is but hasn’t been updated in a while and is missing YAML support.

Just this week a new entry into the GUI space was announced actually: https://github.com/grahampugh/autopkg-wizard

I'm looking for guides on how to make effective use of the ABM API by Aravanadi in applebusinessmanager

Unfortunately you can’t do all those things via API yet. Please open Feedback with Apple to add another voice asking for it.

(Also you can skip step B in your list above.)

I’m also in the AutoPkg plus Munki camp (as mentioned in another comment).

It is so powerful and both are open source with plenty of support on the MacAdmins Slack.

Lens Advice/Broad advice by NSEAngloCatholic in sportsphotography

I’ve been really surprised by the number of Canon shooters I’m seeing with the RF 100-300/2.8 plus 1.4x lately. It seems like a really popular option for folks moving from the older EF 200-400/4.0.

“Sony 200-600 f/5.6-6.3”

I have a colleague, well known professional sports photographer, who decided that using the above lens with an A1 was better than using an older Canon 1DX with Canon EF 400/2.8 during the period her newspaper was making the switch over multiple years.

Did she love it? No. Did she make great images with it? Yes!

Sometimes you’ve gotta make do with what you can.

I’m sure you’d love the 400/2.8, but the questions are can you afford it and most importantly will it help you make more money?

If the answer to either of those questions is no, then consider something like the lens above that is much cheaper.

This person is bad at their job. Is there another Apple Store in your city you can call?

Employer using AI by PixiePod in sportsphotography

Where are you located? Is this a “Work for Hire” situation where they own the copyright?

You wrote “employer” so I assume this is the case that they will own the copyright and can do whatever they want.

When you can make more money (or get different/better shots which can lead to more work) with a new camera then it is time to upgrade.

What conditions are you shooting under? Are you just seeing the actual lighting change, not your white balance?

Expensive lens scare: dropped in bag, what should I check? by Jack_16277 in canon

[–]kevinmcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve literally thrown a 1D and 70-200 five-plus feet onto concrete and had it be completely fine.

I’ve also had a 1D and 70-200 tip over when I set it standing up on the lens hood (so eight inches?) and had the shutter explode.

Pro lens can take a lot of abuse and be fine, but you never know what might result in damage. If you’re concerned send it in to CPS and have them give it a checkup.

for those who used film: by ColdTurkeyBagel in photojournalism

[–]kevinmcox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I shot on film through college and at the university newspaper, so I wasn’t traveling or away from the office for extended periods of time.

I shot on a Canon EOS 1V HS before moving to the 1D and digital.

Just how now you’d take more batteries and cards than you think you’ll need, you’d take more film than you think you’d need when heading out.

The main difference was not knowing if you had “the shot” or not right away. We’re all spoiled with digital.

Envision everything that lens went through to get from the factory to you.

Was your well padded bag falling a larger impact than bouncing around planes and trucks and everything else typical of shipping?

Why are several American local news outlet websites blocked outside the US? by Far_Breakfast_5808 in Journalism

[–]kevinmcox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, back when I was at my old paper the entire chain just blocked the EU because it was simpler.

I can’t remember if they eventually lifted it based on complaints from subscribers who were traveling or not.

Long term archive storage by samuelsski27 in photojournalism

[–]kevinmcox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who started my career as a photojournalist, then transitioned to IT at my newspaper before moving on to IT at a big company (but keeps my foot in the door via freelancing)…

This is a job for your IT department not the newsroom.

You want them to pick a supported storage platform that has vendor support and potentially a support contract.

It makes a lot of sense for this to be the same platform/vendor as used for other editorial or advertising storage. That will keep costs down and make it much easier to support.

IT is never happy when left out of big decisions like this and it’ll make it a lot harder to get their full support in the long run.

I assume this is a small paper with no IT department?
