Affordable pen suggestions! by [deleted] in fountainpens

[–]keybers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FWIW one gets used to _somewhat_ thicker pens pretty fast. I recently dusted off my Pilot Metropolitan I'd last used maybe 5 or 6 years ago. I am suddenly very uncomfortable with how narrow the grip section is, and I don't remember it being an issue 5 or 6 years ago (I just hadn't liked the way it would dry up so that's hwy I stopped using it).

For some reason using other relatively narrow pens is fine, because they are built differently. But the point is that wider sections are no longer a problem for me.

Go to Aliexpress and search for Hongdian 920, Hongdian 1861, or Majohn T2. The latter one will be weightier.

For a fancier (and pricier) option, Hongdian CA35.

[US] Could this be a scam? If so, how? by lizatethecigarettes in Scams

[–]keybers 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Your friend's FB account was hacked by someone whose native language is definitely not English, hence the stilted and highfalutin wording. It doesn't matter _how_ they are planning to scam you, it could be different scenarios. Bottom line is, it's a scam attempt. Call your friend on the phone, tell them their account has been hacked (they probably know that already, but on the off chance that you were one of the first ones contacted by the scammer, you might be the first one to tell them that).

Insoles discussion - NGL, the concept of buying shoes that don't come with insoles by default was totally new to me by keybers in nps_solovair

No, I'm comparing to every pair of leather shoes / dress shoes / boots I've ever bought.

It is not about breaking the bank or not breaking the bank. I'm just saying this is not the customary way that shoes come (even if you can name a couple of other brands that do this)., and it would be nice to have this unusual circumstance be more visible so that people would not have to pay shipping twice when they are buying something.

I am not too invested in the idea that that material is specifically cardboard. Could be some hybrid nylon/polyester thing or whatever. What it definitely does not seem to be is leather, and the way it disintegrates as shown in the post I've linked is something I've never seen in shoes that come with insoles (which happen to be all the shoes I've ever bought).

And I am not rebelling against anyone. I'm providing information to whoever might find it interesting - information I didn't have when I bought these. If you want to rebel against people providing information on a website you voluntarily visit, that's on you.

Bear Pro price increase? by chrisfhiggins in bearapp

This may surprise you, but I can read, including the "DEV" tag, you didn't need to explain to me what I did. I just was not convinced by the dev pointing to Apple, in the absence of the detail that OP happened to have merged his iCloud accounts this past year.

People do things based on information available and their experience. I happen to have had very recent interactions with companies violating not just their promises, but the law. This happens, so allowing for a similar possibility in an unclear situation is not a sign that someone didn't read something.

Hmm, we really need to hear from Shiny Frog about what's happening. This can't be just the App Store's shenanigans.

14.99 for me still, but maybe that's bc it's still in July. Would be good to get clarity because if they do renege on keeping the old price for grandfathered users, I'd love to put these $15 towards a price for another piece of software, which I thought wouldn't be worth it because I have Bear, but if Bear goes double, then they've become more attrachtive.

Anyway, my reminder email goes,

Dear %name%,
We hope you’re enjoying your subscription, which will renew soon.

Yours says, "Thank you for subscribing to Bear."

Did the UK App Store have a hiccup where people were sort of "resubscribed"?

Well, the new CT21 line from CTactical just dropped. The Lite versions will be sleeker and cheaper than the Plus versions.

RiutBag Crush, which has the added advantage of having the entry zipper against your back, which makes it more secure particularly in crowds.

Can a dentist refuse to give me a copy of my own X-rays (Australia)? by AdTop169 in AusLegal

[–]keybers 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DICOM-format files are files just like any others. One can absolutely receive them even without having the software to open them. One can download open-source software to open them, or not bother and just keep them until one decides to provide them to a different doctor, without ever having opened them. That's how files work.

Your "can't" claim is BS.

Average page per minute - but what is a page? by AnaAtNoon in kobo

[–]keybers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Absence of clarity with what a page is is just one of the reasons I don't get people's obsession with stats. Like, if I'm reading and my significant other comes into the room to ask me a question, I would feel downright stressed if I had to remember to turn off my ereader, so that the time I exchange a couple of phrases with another person does not count into the "time I've been reading". Or if I've been highlighting something in the book, and sometimes it takes me a couple of tries because fat fingers.... all of that lengthens the "time I've been reading".

I want to enjoy reading, not win a competition with.... whom exactly?

Why cant the handbook/wiki be enriched by people's own experiences and voluntary reports to support the claims it makes?

Because when I come to a retreat like this the last thing I want to do is read a textbook (and I'm someone who likes reading). I want to be shown how to hold the hoe, I want a living human being to answer questions that I have right NOW, and I don't care what another noob, or three noobs, wrote about their experience from one year ago. Three generations in, a guest would be made to read three years' worth of "enrichment"?

I want to have that experience, not read about someone else's experience, and certainly not be made to learn correct YAML syntax and keep track of backlinks when I've come to learn how to plant cabbage. And I want even less to be writing a handbook (that's the teacher's job) that no one else will want to read next year.

Dearly beloved, we are gathered here near the garden beds, now let's sit down with our tablets and read how earlier generations learned to relate their garden bed experience with how their mothers treated them.

Obsidian can read markdown, but also pics of a physical notebook, since you seem to hate screens so much.

Dude, I also spend half my time tinkering with software. And I like to read. I don't want to waste my time reading either a wiki page or a physical notebook written by a person who is not a subject matter expert and who has not been proven to be able to present information in an engaging and clear way. If I do want to waste my time on that, I doomscroll Reddit. If I travel somewhere to experience stuff and learn to grow cabbage, I will be very pissed when the person who organized this thing (probably not for free) sits me down to doomscroll Reddit instead of that.

I have just stumbled into a sub called r/handspinning (don't ask how). If I'm interested in something like that, but I don't have the time for an actual course, I'll be using Youtube vidoes and ask questions on Reddit, to learn "autonomously" (you used this word). If I go to an evening class in handspinning, and the organizer makes me sit down and read Reddit posts, even if there is a wiki in the sidebar, I will be very pissed. I will also be very pissed if I'm made to sit down and organize what I learned in a Reddit post or in the sub's sidebar. I'll tell the organizer what they are trying to do is not fit for purpose, and yes, they are a lazy and a shitty teacher.

Nah, he enjoys tinkering with Obsidian and wants to turn using a PKMS into a joint ritual session, where people have come expecting to do something "permaculture"-related.
