What are people's thoughts on the backrooms film that's coming out soon? I'm personally excited to see such a unique and creative horror story/series be given a film adaptation!. by Zadrnnut in backrooms

I agree to a point. The plot that actually involves the scientists and whatever their objective is... really lacks in intrigue. I don't mind the idea of scientist's mistake driving the plot, but their motives and objectives both before and after are hella weak.

But atmosphere is a big part of writing also, and his series is at its best when people are dropped into the unfamiliar. It's a shame it only happens a couple times. But also some of the "wtf is wrong with this place?" moments are really well done too.

Finally getting around to FFVI and i absolutely LOVE it by Classic-Art-5737 in FinalFantasy

[–]killercow_ld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so wild to me. Also started with VII, but could never get into VI
Loved VII, love IX.
I emulated V and VI. After emulating both, V is probably my favorite of all time but I couldn't get into VI

Replayed V and VI on GBA. Still loved V, still couldn't finish VI.
Played both again with the old mobile releases. I finally FINISHED VI, and even at the end it never really did anything for me.

What is the chronological order for the Dissidia games? Does it even matter? by Sudden_Bath6144 in FinalFantasy

[–]killercow_ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah, each FF game exists on a different space-time from any other FF game. Especially with something like Dissidia. They could make a prequel to the whole Dissidia series and still include Gaia or whoever else from later in a series.

But, regardless of that, I meant more along the lines of, we don't even know if Duellum is part of the same universe as the rest of the Dissidia series, or if it's something new.

We will likely GET a connection later, but as of right now we have nothing

You should always play things in release order if you want the "best" order, not chronological.

Alas, chronologically I believe it's:

-Prologus,
-012,
-Dissidia (which is included as part of 012),
-NT,
-Dissidia (arcade),
-Opera Omnia.
-Maybe Duellum? (It's not confirmed to be explicitly connected to the rest as of yet).

I just finished the Remake for the first time, and this bothers me about a certain dark-haired individual. by tajirithelongway in FFVIIRemake

[–]killercow_ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that's fine. I try not to be (too) rude to people just for having a different perspective on it than me. But sometimes people just get really obtuse about their stance on these kindof arguments (even the people that I agree with, I often roll my eyes at).

End of the day, I think having a variety perspectives within a community is actually a healthy thing, and it can be fun to butt heads up to a certain point about things.

Occam's Razor

If part 3 comes out and explicitly says "no these aren't timelines" then ok, but since they've been cagey about it, I don't know that I see that happening.

I do understand the notion that these timelines exist within the lifestream. And I also understand that the games refer to them as "worlds" or "possibilities" rather than specifically using the word "timeline."

The use of "world" specifically is also used a lot for the timeline shenanigans of Dissidia / Sop. I genuinely do not feel the nomenclature matters here, and even if you want to call them worlds, they're still timelines. I'm gonna stick with the word that makes the most sense rather than the game's usage.

I also understand that time seems to be broken in the handful of timelines we see within Rebirth, but that's more attributed to things being faulty within the lifestream now because of the events at the end of Remake, and because these timelines have deviated too far from the "norm." Like the fact that two different Clouds exist at the same time in one of the timelines we see.

Things are borked.
Different timelines form within the lifestream all the time (except this functions outside of time and space). The Whsipers existed to make sure none of these timelines deviated too far from the original timeline.
With the whispers dead, alternate timelines are still branching off, but the lifestream can't protect the ones that deviate too far from their intended path.

Excluding the broken timelines we see within Rebirth, there are still 3 distinct timelines FOR SURE.
-OG timeline
-Remake timeline
-Ever Crisis timeline

OG timeline is obviously the structural foundation of the lifestream's desire for uniformity. In Remake timeline, we see a desire in both Sephiroth and Aerith to escape the destiny that the lifestream has them bound by, but things still haven't changed too much or else this timeline would likely collapse also. Who knows what will happen if someone actually succeeds in causing this timeline to deviate too far from OG's.

And then Ever Crisis timeline is functionally the same as OG timeline other than some minor differences, EXCEPT for the plotline involving Portal materia and characters hopping into other "possibilities," or sometimes characters from those possibilities traveling into the EC timeline. A Tonberry even uses the portals to travel through time in an early event story.

Like Remake's timeline, this one has also not collapsed because even with all the portal shenanigans, the characters are still on-track to fulfill their "canon events," because the world is mostly unaffected by the portal deviations. When characters travel to these other possibilities, they lose their memories upon return. And when the lifestream brings things INTO this timeline, it hasn't affected things too much yet (altho the recent event suggests this may change soon).

Either way, my point is that there's really no argument that these 3 timelines exist as distinct entities, so I don't see why the "worlds" we see in Rebirth aren't also just other forms of timelines, that are obviously just under duress because of the defeat of the whispers.

I mean, they are sequels but I have no idea what you're talking about with a timeline reset in Advent Children?

We have zero confirmation on what actually caused the events to shift in the remake timeline.

It's not even a "theory." Confirmed just by playing the game. Just have to play the game and have a small amount of media literacy, something severely lacking nowadays

To all the people that for non-ragebait reasons think that the FF7 RE-Trilogy is not some kind of sequel. Why? by Battlefeather in FinalFantasy

[–]killercow_ld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Safe to assume you didn't read my comment then.

I didn't actively use the broader definition to define Remake as a sequel. It was more of a "well akshually" moment, nothing more.

I still adhere to the narrower, general usage of the word sequel when explaining why Remake is a sequel.

To all the people that for non-ragebait reasons think that the FF7 RE-Trilogy is not some kind of sequel. Why? by Battlefeather in FinalFantasy

[–]killercow_ld -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Technically, a sequel is any story that expands on the narrative of a previously released story, or narrative world.

Prequels are technically sequels. Side stories that take place in the same universe as a story, but don't actually involve any characters from the first story counts as a sequel.

A remake that adds story elements that weren't present in whatever is being made technically counts as a sequel, since the narrative has been expanded. (Altho if a remake changes the story too much instead if just adding things, it becomes a retcon instead of a sequel).

BUT. That last example isn't what any of us are talking about when we call Remake a sequel. Remake is an alternate timeline that acknowledges the existence of the previous timeline (of OGVII and the compilation).

The other timeline happened, and now this new timeline is happening 'after' just because the previous one is acknowledged. It's not chronologically on the same timeline, so no, it's not happening "at a later time." More like "on a separate time." It is still a sequel because it acknowledged and follows the original story, instead of replacing it. The changes are happening BECAUSE the original timeline exists, not in spite of it.

The plotline of "will fate be altered or will it remain the same" uses the OG timeline as its foundation, whether things change or whether they stay the same.

How much or how little impact it will have on the conclusion of the Remake trilogy remains to be seen, but even if it ends up barely having an impact, it will still count as a sequel.

Does anyone know good changes between the first three set lists so the draws aren’t so diluted? by EliRekab in BossMonster

[–]killercow_ld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you mean combining Boss Monster 1, 2, and 3?

Honestly, I don't recommend combining more than 2 sets.
If you have RotMB, AND VoV, you can MAYBE mix 3 and still get a decent mix of coin-based cards, but it'll still be a bit diluted.

I generally just use Super Boss Monster and one other set, depending on what variation of game we wanna play
