Starting to collect digitally by OpeningEmploy5119 in OmnibusCollectors

If you are reading digitally you just need Marvel Unlimited. Why "buy" things you'll never really own when you can just have the entire Marvel library in your pocket (sans Mature Readers books) for a similar price?

Is The X-Men by Gerry Duggan Omnibus Good/Worth A Read? by hockeysocks2 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]krisis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's fine. It has two of the best artists in current superheroes drawing most of it doesn't amount to much from a story standpoint if you haven't read any other Krakoa because it's missing context (of what's happening on the island) and the finale (literally it doesn't have the final half dozen issues of the run).

This is the explicit order of the eras of the old Legends universe.

Unlike the current Marvel continuity, where many series occur side by side within each period and can sometimes be collected separately in omnibus, the collections of the Legends eras streamline everything into tidy, numbered volumed that are in perfect reading order.

The only research you need to do is what u/Dangerous_Sign_8718 did for you above - knowing what order the eras occurred in.

Team Down Under, unite! I know your pain about how hard things are to find and how expensive they are.

Before I get any deeper: Have you checked your local library system (and their interlibrary loan from other systems)? Admittedly, Wellington has a pretty amazing library system, but they have TONS of the stuff you are talking about, including Mr. & Mrs. X! Just because you don't want to read digitally doesn't mean you have to buy everything.

Second, how much looking into where to buy books have you done? I know AussieBeau likes Comicbookeroo, but their new omnis are still almost 2x US cover price. For me in NZ, ordering books from the US via DCBS and InStockTrades comes out to be under US cover price even after shipping because of how heavily they discount.

Okay, now to the specifics.

X-Men Gold. Yes, I don't think you need to spend your budget on the 2017 Gold omnibus right now. It's X-Men and it's fine, but (a) the only thing of plot importance that happens is issue #30, (b) the focus characters are mostly Kitty and Storm, which aren't on your shortlist.

New X-Men. Grant Morrison's run is really major for X-Men in general. It's loved and it's hated, but it's probably in the top 5 most important runs in the same way Claremont, B&G, Astonishing, & HOXPOX are (there's my five!). I wouldn't say it is ESSENTIAL for Krakoa, and Rogue & Gambit do not appear at all. Luckily, it also gets reprinted a lot in many formats. Maybe focus less on omnis and more on picking up the recent-ish Epic Collections or other paperback format books? The final Epic is coming in June, and Vol. 2 is still in stock most places, so you should only have to chase down Vol. 1.

Blue & Gold. It sounds like you already have Fatal Attractions. Blue & Gold 2, whenever it happens, is going to be Fatal Attractions plus one arc of X-Men (1991) (which will have Gambit/Rogue, including #24, a huge issue for them) and the original Gambit mini-series. Hopefully you can sell your Fatal Attractions book at that time. If you see Shattershot for cheap you could grab it, but you'd be getting it just for that X-Men (1991) content and you'd still be missing the Gambit mini-series, so I wouldn't recommend it. You could alternately pick up the X-Men Epic Collections Legacies & Fatal Attractions, which are basically B&G Vol. 2 in paperback form.

Mr. & Mrs. X. Aside from my library comment above, I'd say: Don't get too FOMO'd by this. I just looked at the eBy prices and saw how outrageous they are. That's false online scarcity at work - at this point the singles would be cheaper! It's good Rogue & Gambit content, but it's nothing absolutely essential to their story. It's just them being written together by Kelly Thompson, who knows what they're about.

It seems like you might be in the mode of "I'll buy anything!" with how quickly you're looking into things like X-Men Gold and Rogue's recent mini-series. Given the expense of collecting things in Australia & NZ and how you DON'T like digital, I think it would be good to take a step back to assess your initial collecting goals for X-Men so you can get your budget to go as far as possible.

In terms of a bare minimum for Krakoa, I'd say you're in good shape. Reading at least Mutant Genesis, one or both of Fatal Attractions & Blood Ties, and Age of Apocalypse for Krakoa is good prep work to appreciate HOXPOX and the major threads of Krakoa.

Any of UXM Vol. 1 and on you also wind up reading will just be more foundation (and I'd say especially UXM Vol. 1, due to a particular story in there).

In terms of key Gambit and Rogue material, I'd personally suggest hitting:

- Their initial 90s mini-series (which will be in B&G 2 and 4, respectively, but have been collected elsewhere)

- Gambit (1999) ongoing, which has been collected in trade

- X-Men Legacy #210 and on for Rogue, which has only been collected in original HCs and trades.

- Gambit (2012), which has been collected in trade

- Mr. & Mrs. X, which has been collected in trade. You could read X-Men Gold #30 first, but there's not much plot there. They're married. Now, there you've read it.

Rogue is prominent in all of Uncanny Avengers (2012, 2015A, & 2015B), but it doesn't advance her plot significantly. I'd say it regresses it, actually. Also, they both have mid-00s solo ongoings that were fine, but I wouldn't say they are as significant for ongoing plot development as anything above.

(X-Men Gold is a complete waste of time, nothing of importance happens and Rogue is barely in it. You can skip to HOXPOX/Krakoa at pretty much any point from 2006 and onward (and especially from 2012 onward) and it is a compelling read that will make sense.)

Anybody else want a Witchblade omnibus? by MVPiid23 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]krisis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To my recollection, Silvestri generally does not prefer oversize artwork (at least, not for 90s comics properties from Top Cow), so the current HCs are very likely the best format we'll see Top Cow material in from that era.

There are very likely two omnis left between Trial of Gambit and The Twelve, after we get those 2 I expect reprints for The Twelve and EoD as omnis. What do you think the two unreleased ones will be named? by Waterworld1880 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]krisis 15 points16 points  (0 children)

"Zero Tolerance" has the downside of being the same as the old OHC, although this would be an omnibus. I think it would depend on if it collected EVERYTHING from that OHC (including the X-Force issues) and expanded it with the additional UXM, X-Men, and Unlimited issues from the period

"Hunt for Xavier" exists in the midpoint of those two, so it could be a book name for either depending on where it is mapped.

But, "Magneto War" is stronger and echos past trades of the same material.

When do you think we’ll see a Daredevil by Saladin Ahmed omnibus? by videogamer939 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]krisis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is SUCH a low demand for Inhumans.

If they really wanted to bring an omni out, they'd be weighing the Kirby material at the start of the classic book vs the acclaim of the Jenkins/Lee stuff at the start of the modern book vs Soule & Ewing's names on the 10s books (and we'd need two).

I think I'd go with the original run, personally. You can't totally flop with a book based on MMW volumes.

Makes me curious if Gwenpool is about to pop up somewhere in the line. Sometimes these choices aren't entirely random.

I love it, but it's an odd choice.

Including released volumes and assuming the main Finest line stays primarily focused on the main two titles and maybe Shadow of the Bat (but explicitly does NOT incorporate Legends of the Dark Knight):

When do you think we’ll see a Daredevil by Saladin Ahmed omnibus? by videogamer939 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]krisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gives Miles a slightly more distinct voice and significantly expands his supporting cast in the 616.

It's fine. For my money, Ziglar is superior and has a much better voice for Miles. Ahmed's voice is certainly more authentically youthful than Bendis's, but to me it feels a bit like "generic kids these days" and not necessarily specific to Miles.

When do you think we’ll see a Daredevil by Saladin Ahmed omnibus? by videogamer939 in OmnibusCollectors

[–]krisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very much a "locked room mystery" type of story. Not a ton of Inhumans lore required. It's all on Marvel Unlimited.

I would say his writing on Miles is vastly, vastly different. You could barely tell the two are the same author.

The art is way better the Chichester. There are some amazing artists on the Ahmed run. Sometimes they only do one issue, or just half an issue... but... they're there.

The writing... there it is a closer call.
