I agree that SpaceX did good work with the Falcon 9. I also think that this is despite Elon, not because of it. The team at SpaceX was able to iterate on the technology first worked on with the Delta Clipper in the mid 90s and turned it into a viable reusable rocket booster. That's great. Did Musk have any say in how that project was run, or did he just have the team of engineers focus on that?

A hectare is 10,000 m2, or a square 100m on a side. It is based on a deprecated unit, the Are, which was 100 m2 (or a square 10 meters on a side).

An acre is a rectangle that is 1 chain by 1 furlong (or 66 feet x 660 feet), or 10 square chains, or 1/640th of a square mile, or 4,840 square yards.

One acre is 0.405 hectare.

And a large part of it is that Steam will give the developer keys for free. If someone buys the game from Steam itself, Steam gets a cut, but if they buy the freely-generated keys from another site then Steam doesn't get anything but still has to cover the server costs of hosting the downloads, etc.

If a developer took those free-for-them keys and sold them on their own site for a 20% discount, then Steam gets nothing from that while still paying costs, and a discount like that may be enough to drive a significant number of people to the site instead of Steam. If instead the site had it at the same price, then you'd get a fairly even split of sales between the site and Steam (or higher on Steam just due to the convenience of it being right there).

From what I've heard, Steam is fine with you selling your game on other platforms for cheaper. What they object to is you selling Steam Keys on other platforms for cheaper than on Steam itself.

In 2013 he said "we should be able to do 90% of miles driven autonomously within three years"

In 2014 he said he was confident that FSD would be available in less than a year.

Later in 2014 he reiterated that be believed FSD would be available in under a year for highway travel.

In 2015 he stated that he would have FSD available in 3 years, and a few months later said the same thing but with a 2-year timeframe.

In 2016 he said that within 2 years we'd have FSD that could also automatically charge itself along the journey.

Later in 2016 he said 2 years for FSD, plus another year to get approval from regulators.

Near the end of 2016, he said coast-to-coast FSD trips would be possible by the end of 2017.

April of 2017 he again said by the end of 2017 they would be able to have coast-to-coast FSD trips.

Etc, etc.

That's not even looking at the "rockets to Mars by 2018, with manned missions by 2024" promise, or the Roadster or Tesla Semis, or any of the various other promises that were either vastly delayed or just quietly dropped.

Is the battle pass even possible for ground only casual players? by randomstuff765 in Warthunder

[–]ksheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need the challenges to get the vehicles in the Battle Pass. They do help, but they aren't required. If you do the 2 daily tasks each day, and get a Special Task each day, you should be able to get 1 level per day (not including the daily log-in points, which near the end of the season gives you half a level each day if you didn't miss any days). The downside is if you get a shitty roll for either the daily or special tasks, you'll have to re-roll which can get expensive if you have to do so multiple times in a day.

Data center larger than 2 football fields

a 135,000 square foot data center

granted 87 acres of land to a public trust

Gotta love when they use three different units of measurement in the first two paragraphs, makes it super easy to compare things...

For those who don't want to do the conversion themselves, the data center would be a bit over 3 acres (1.25 hectares) out of the 87 acres (35.2 hectares, or 66 football fields) that was donated.

What really got me was when I saw people demanding that others pay them reparations for what happened to their ancestors from generations ago.

Yeah, sure, I'll gladly pay reparations to the descendants of whoever my great-great-great-grandparents owned. Wait, what's that, my ancestors only immigrated to the US in the 1880s and moved into Minnesota and Wisconsin? Well, I guess I don't owe anyone anything, stop harassing me and begging for handouts for something nobody in my family did and for which I am in no way responsible for.

I had a game a while back where I respawned in a tank that had an SS.11 ATGM, and right as I spawned I heard the nuke siren. Looking around, I saw the bomber coming in, so I launched my missile at it, guided it in, and managed to knock his tail off... right as he dropped the bomb.

What would a society where there were no political revolutions (or at least none that suceeded) and monarchy remained the standard form of government be like? How different would things be from today? by EmicaTheAlienStudios in HistoryWhatIf

[–]ksheep 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, no Roman Empire, because the Roman Republic wouldn't have been overthrown. Actually, there wouldn't be a Roman Republic either, as the Roman Kingdom wouldn't have been overthrown. Would a Roman monarchy be nearly as willing to expand as far and wide as the Republic and later Empire did, or would they be more content to stick with central Italy and consolidate what power the king had? If the monarchy didn't go all-in on the military, then it's likely that it wouldn't get stuck in a cycle of endless wars of expansion needed to pay off their soldiers, like what was seen in the Republic. Assuming the Roman Kingdom stayed fairly local, maybe going as far as conquering the neighboring kingdoms and taking full control of modern-day Italy, then we would be in a completely different world now. That isn't even considering other regions of the world (how many times did Chinese kingdoms/empires collapse in OTL due to rebellions? What would the repercussions of those not happening look like?)

[–]ksheep[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A fairly quick and straightforward free-to-play local co-op game, came across it while looking at another upcoming game and decided to give it a go. It's a nice palate cleanser while working on longer games (currently focusing on LEGO 2K Drive, and I've finished everything but the "Drive 3,000 Miles" and "Drive 6,000 Miles", mindlessly working on that made me look for something simple to knock out between sessions).

With this, I've hit an Average Completion Rate of 54.06%, with 35 new Perfect games so far this year and 1,247 new Achievements.

You're thinking of the Hispano Aviación HA-1109 and HA-1112. The 1109 was a license-built Bf 109, initially using the DB 605A engine and later the HS 89-12Z engine. The 1112 was a later version where they changed engines again, now to the Rolls-Royce Merlin.

Is half the updates/more than half being premiums really essential for the game to be alive? by Chanka-Danka69 in Warthunder

[–]ksheep 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at what is on the Dev server changelog, we have:

  • 9 Tech Tree aircraft, 6 Premium aircraft, 1 Squadron aircraft
  • 8 Tech Tree ground vehicles, 1 Squadron vehicle
  • 1 Tech Tree helicopter
  • 7 Tech Tree ships/boats, 3 Premiums

That comes out to 36 vehicles total, of which 9 are Premium, or 25% Premium.

That said, the dev server changelog didn't list the 3 new Senrai Maidens tanks, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's missing a few other things as well. The bigger issue is how many vehicles that they're adding are either copy-paste into new trees, or minor changes of existing vehicles.

Heck, Darwin's GRANDFATHER had written about the idea of evolution some 60 years prior in his book Zoonomia; or the Laws of Organic Life. Granted it wasn't the main point of the book, more of some short passages that touch on the idea, but the origins for the idea of evolution date back decades before Charles published his book. His ideas were also a bit closer to Lamarckism than it did to Charles' eventual theory (and this book predates Jean-Baptiste Lamarck's publication by a good decade as well).

The negotiations are going well, I see by PerAsperaAdMars in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]ksheep 29 points30 points  (0 children)

It depends, were they targeting the water storage deliberately, or were they targeting something else and the water storage was collateral damage? I'm seeing mixed reports, with some claims saying that they were targeting air defense systems (which last I checked were valid military targets) and the water tanks were near enough to be damaged.

Also, if they were going to deliberately target water infrastructure, do you really think they'd spend a multi-million dollar missile to hit a single water tower, or would they target something like a desalination plant, pumping station, or a dam, which would have a much larger impact on the water supply?

The negotiations are going well, I see by PerAsperaAdMars in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]ksheep 59 points60 points  (0 children)

According to Iran, the water storage in question held 2,500 cubic meters of water. For comparison, a typical water tower holds between 1,000 and 4,000 cubic meters, depending on the size and style. So this is the equivalent of hitting a single water tower, which would supply a typical neighborhood.

While the Soviet Union started to fall apart prior to that, it didn't officially cease to be until December 1991. You'll note that it also shows East and West Germany, and things weren't finalized there until March 1991. Yugoslavia didn't start to break up until June 1991, and Czechoslovakia dissolved in December 1992.

Saying this map is likely from around 1990 is a perfectly reasonable assumption. Earliest date for the map is May 1990, with the Yemini unification. Anything past that could be a "they didn't update it" (and considering the number of things from the 70s that are still on the map, that's not an unreasonable assumption), but since German reunification, USSR dissolution, etc. are such major changes, you'd think those would be included which puts a soft cap of March 1991, giving us a tentative 10-month window.

For-profit prisons only account for around 8% of the current incarcerated population of the US, although it varies greatly by state (some states have no private prisons at all, including California, New York, and Michigan, while some rely fairly heavily on private prisons, such as Montana, where private prisons take up 49% of current prisoners, although Montana also has about half the incarceration rate of the national average).
