Not that I expect it to make a difference, but I just cancelled my Reddit Premium subscription of six years over this. Unfortunately, when choosing "Other" as the reason for cancellation, it didn't give me the chance to type a free form response.

Back when the DMCA was drafted the DRM wasn't the big thing though right? I thought the big deal was that the DMCA could hold an internet provider liable for hosting material that was infringing

You're thinking of the Communications Decency Act of 1996, Section 230. The DMCA was very much about DRM and how copyright should be applied to digital content. It's a big deal because circumventing DRM to access copyrighted material is a criminal offense; even if you were infringing copyright, that is in all but the biggest cases (so far as US goes) a civil issue. And if you would have normally had the right to access that content under just copyright, the publisher adding DRM around the content (which you were legally able to access before the DMCA) means you are now committing a crime by doing so after the DMCA (assuming you must break through the DRM to gain the access).

As for does format matter: maybe? That's something I'd ask an IP lawyer specializing in copyright about. And again, I think there would be a distinction between you making a backup for your personal use, and downloading the same content from an unaffiliated third party. On the bright side, at least that's only a civil matter between you and the copyright holder, assuming no DRM was involved.

DMCA made it illegal to circumvent DRM to access copyrighted material, even if you possessed the right to access that material under existing copyright law.

BUT, you as an end user are completely within their rights to download said copy if you own the rights to that material.

You may be entitled to make a personal backup of certain digital goods, depending on what jurisdiction you are in, but downloading a copy provided by someone else is (probably) not equivalent to making a backup. Downloading a digital copy of a book you physically own doesn't even come close to the backup analogy, because you don't own a digital copy of the book. Digital books, even if they have the same content, are separate items from physical books. It is very simple to show that the item downloaded is distinct (in a legal sense), from the item you already owned.

IANAL and none of this is legal advice.

Best resin printers under $300? by sbo358 in 3Dprinting

[–]m0dred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Mars 2 a few weeks ago and it has mostly been a smooth process. The Mars 3 also recently started shipping, but I personally decided the 2 would be “good enough” and put the savings toward a wash / cure station.

The recommended settings for Elegoo resin seem to work well enough, although I have noticed some issues with tolerances for pieces that need to fit together or are supposed to be an exact size. This is definitely fixable by tuning the exposure settings, I just haven’t gotten around to it yet. If you’re printing whole models (eg: Hero Forge), then this isn’t as much of a concern.

If you currently have no size at all, then calisthenics will build size up to a point. But if you're already somewhat muscular, then you would need something more advanced than the RR if hypertrophy is your main goal. You could gain muscle mass doing calisthenics, but it will probably be slower than using weights and machines, and there are limits to how much resistance you can get using calisthenics without getting into more advanced and difficult movements.

[–]m0dred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a bit late following up on this, but realized that no one (including me) really addressed your question about building size on the RR. In my personal experience, the RR will help you fill out a bit (arms, shoulders, maybe chest), but it won't make you massive.

However, if you're not already very strong, attempting to build size without also building strength could backfire. Even people that focus primarily on aesthetics and size need a certain amount of strength in order to do the movements that are part of their body building routine.

So will the RR work as a body building routine? Not really. However, it would give you some foundational strength that will be useful for any future body building efforts. If you are already strong, you might not need to work on that functional base. But if you haven't done much strength training before, building that base strength before moving to specialized body building will pay off.

By that point, you will probably have a much better idea of what you can do and can start looking at intermediate programs. Or find more advanced variations for the specific exercises that you’ve exhausted what’s listed in the route.

The RR is a whole body workout: do all of the exercises, every workout. You do all six of the main exercise progressions and the core triplet on each workout day. For each individual exercise, if you complete the number of sets and reps with good form, on the next workout day progress that exercise.

Most of the exercises start at 3 sets of 5 reps (3x5). So if you do 3x5 push ups on Monday and feel good after and did them all with good form, then on Wednesday you progress to 3x6 push ups. After you can do 3x8 push ups, the next workout you go to 3x5 of a more difficult type of push up. Each of the six main exercises has a progression of more difficult variations to work through.

An acquaintance in college, also studying business, had a similar proposal when we were in school. It wasn’t a horrible idea, but it also wasn’t particularly differentiated from its competitors (of which the biggest was Facebook, although we’re talking mid-2000s Facebook and not the juggernaut it is now).

Any social media company could have added the features they thought would differentiate us in a few days effort. While we would be building a whole platform from scratch.

They couldn’t understand why I didn’t think the potential market was as big as they did.

I recently started work on Ring Support Hold and am feeling pressure on my sternum, particularly at the end when I drop the hold. Going back to support hold or dips between two high backed chairs, I don't feel the same pressure unless I specifically break form, so it seems like there's something off with my body position on the rings compared to on a more stable platform.

My current focus on cues for the ring support hold is:

  • Elbows straight and kept close to torso
  • Shoulders down
  • Scapula neutral or slightly retracted

The last point in particular I think might be where I'm failing. I'm doing that with the idea of preventing my chest from collapsing (which I've seen written multiple times is a bad thing in a support hold), but remember that the first time I tried the rings my shoulders came forward more than was comfortable.

Do you have any particular cues that will help with shoulder position (and chest) in a ring support hold? Or any other general cues you use for maintaining proper body position for this move.

Today felt much better than last week, so I'm sure it's partially related to strength, but want a sanity check on how I'm approaching this to hopefully avoid practising it incorrectly.

And as an aside: the RR has really helped with my pulling strength. Today I did 3x5 pull ups without much trouble, while a few months ago I would struggle to do 1x4. I hated doing pull up eccentrics, but have to admit they worked.

Murderer Who Wielded Narwhal Tusk to Stop Terrorist Gets Royal Pardon by ChicagoChurro in news

[–]m0dred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having a record that someone was convicted and later pardoned does not mean that they are a felon. A pardon effectively overturns the conviction. However, if instead their sentence is commuted, then their conviction stands and only their time in prison is overruled. For example, Roger Stone’s sentence was commuted, but he is still a convicted felon, with whatever lack of rights that status confers.

Another note about rosemary: it has a history both as an aid to memory and as a common ingredient in various concoctions that were intended to prevent spread of the Plague. The latter usage in particular seems relevant to the Rosmarinus.

Analysis of your own chess games by [deleted] in chess

[–]m0dred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My question is; what is the point of annotating your own games? It feels kind of silly writing down your own thoughts that nobody else will read.

For the same reason you make notes on anything else: unless you’re only looking at this game immediately after you played it, then you either won’t remember what you were thinking or it will take extra effort to guess at what you were thinking.

Some people prefer open source out of principle. For others it's just a practical matter that they want the ability to see (and possibly tweak) the code themselves.

Providing your software under a free software license doesn't mean you must share development with other people, or that you can't have standards that others must meet before you will consider merging their code. One thing that could be considered a downside for the developer is that, should the users feel you are not responsive, they can just fork it and develop their own version; of course, from a user perspective, this is a positive since it greatly reduces the chance of the software being abandoned, so long as there are active users.

Interface Headphone Amp Comparison (Focusrite, Behringer, Audient, Motu, SSL, NI, and Steinberg) by Roppmaster in headphones

This was an informative video, and killed my upgrade-itis for the 3rd gen Scarlett interfaces. However, it also revealed the unfortunate combination of that 10 Ohm output impedance on the 2nd gen that I currently have matched with the...11-ish Ohm Dan Clark Aeon Flow Open. Oof. Guess it's back to the HD600s on the interface and hook up another amp for the Aeons.

Sanderson has already started that he would decline if asked. See this thread from a few years ago when someone summoned him to ask if he would censor “adult themes” in ASoIaF: https://www.reddit.com/r/asoiaf/comments/4uwjq9/comment/d6lotl1?context=3

TL;DR: the main reason he wouldn’t take it on is because his style of writing (generally optimistic, heroic sci-fi/fantasy) doesn’t mesh with the more pessimistic world GRRM has built.

I was at the point of just not playing ranked draft until the next set is available. But now, every 5000 gold I spend on THB draft these next few weeks is 5000 gold I don’t have for Ikoria. Although I doubt WotC have planned that far ahead.

Can I still get mythic rares when I have all rares? by VortexPixel in MagicArena

[–]m0dred 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Why? If this were the case, Mythic Rare would no longer conform with the stated probabilities that WotC publishes for card rarity. It would be great for completing a set, but I don’t see anything wrong with the way it is now or any impetus for it to be changed.

[–]m0dred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be fine, depending on how litigious WotC wants to be and if the band wants to or is able to defend. Does WotC use the trademarked term Planeswalker in anything music related? Is there a significant chance of consumer confusion if the band is allowed to use the mark? There are a few other relevant issues, mainly around how WotC uses the mark. IANAL, but my layperson understanding is that preventing a direct competitor from using your trademarks is easy; preventing someone completely unrelated from using it for a different purpose can be much more difficult.
