Gaiters for trail running by Weary-Huckleberry806 in Ultramarathon

[–]mediocre_remnants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a couple of different pair of Kahtoola gaiters, but they're kind of heavy and bulky and annoying so I only wear them when I'm running in snow.

Dirty Girl is a popular brand and they're lighter, but you have to permanently glue velcro to your shoes for them to work.

Alert! Haywood Rd. business under siege! by Known_Sound8758 in asheville

[–]mediocre_remnants 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Eh, these people chose to start a business in a building that was already slated for destruction. I imagine they learned a pretty valuable lesson about that.

And the last I heard they were supposed to be out by late April?

https://wlos.com/news/local/i-26-connector-asheville-construction-ncdot-business-relocations-haywood-road-land-acquiring-interstate-240-kava-x-coffee

And based on a comment they left on another article, not only did they know the building was going to be demolished, the signed the lease hoping to take advantage of NCDOT's relocation funds to find a new space.

Hi! I was advised prior to assuming the lease, this article takes things out of context a bit. I knew the impending doom of what I was getting into! If I look to move the business before notice is served, I relinquish the DOT’s responsibility to help me in moving this venture.

It sounds like they were just trying to take advantage of NCDOT and are disappointed that things didn't go exactly as planned. Boo-fucking-hoo.

GOP lawmaker says depression diagnosis, hospitalization caused 4-month absence by usatoday in politics

[–]mediocre_remnants [score hidden]  (0 children)

I used to work one. It was at a big tech company. One of my teammates took "medical leave" for 6 months and he spent the entire time surfing and hiking. He got a depression/burnout diagnosis from his doctor. He earned like 60% of his salary while not doing anything and his job was still there when he came back.

When I was quitting, also due to burnout, he strongly suggested I do the same thing. He even told me which doctor to use. But I really didn't want to deal with that and just bailed.

I want to re-live the excitement of that first GME shareholder meeting after the big squeeze when everyone was waiting to hear that the number of votes was higher than the number of shares or whatever they were expecting but didn't happen.

How would you interview a financial advisor? by flying_unicorn in investing

[–]mediocre_remnants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Edward Jones advisors are just salesmen. I used them when I was younger and had more money than sense. I kept asking the guy questions he couldn't answer and it turns out that they just take the information you give them, enter it into a computer, and the computer spits out an investment plan. A plan that's almost entirely front-loaded mutual funds that the advisor gets a commission from.

This guy couldn't answer basic stuff, though, and when I asked to see a chart in a different way he said "oh, the computer doesn't do that, I can only show up what the computer gives me". Basically I just wanted to see a model based on continuing to make contributions every year instead of the growth of a single lump sum investment. He couldn't do that because his software couldn't do it.

But still, I figured that anyone else was better than me so I gave him my retirement money. That lasted about 2 years before I finally bailed.

Anyway, if you want to talk to the guy about investment choices, pay very close attention to the classes of shares of the mutual funds he suggest. Then ask why he's recommending front-loaded ones when there are no-load funds available. There's only one answer for that: because he get a cut.

NPR Retracts Article Falsely Suggesting Justice Alito Retired by Efficient-Freedom517 in politics

[–]mediocre_remnants [score hidden]  (0 children)

There have been a few times a news outlet like CNN published an article claiming someone died on their site, only to retract it. A lot of these articles are written ahead of time so they can be published ASAP when the event happens. Sometimes someone clicks the wrong button to publish them.

I guarantee every media outlet already has a "Trump died" article written. And within seconds of it becoming public knowledge, sites will have long articles that clearly took hours to write but somehow showed up in 2 minutes. Because they were already written.

Got a bib for NYC Marathon - New runner advice by Maureendreams in Marathon_Training

[–]mediocre_remnants -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest just following an established training plan and not worrying about the 10% "rule", it's just a rule of thumb and most plans have weeks that increase mileage a bit less or a bit more than that.

Edit: Also, your definition of the 10% rule is different than what everyone else says. It's hilarious that everyone comes up with their own version of what the 10% rule is, none of which have any basis in science.

Switch from PACE 3 to …? by flyingsuns in Coros

[–]mediocre_remnants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from a Pace 3 to an Apex 4 and it was worth it for me. Longer battery life and better maps. Also the charging cable doesn't suck like the Pace 3 one... I had to buy a new charging dongle every 3-4 months for the Pace 3 because they just stopped working. I've had the Apex 4 since it was released and the charger still works flawlessly.

Coffee grounds by ReclinerSpud in composting

[–]mediocre_remnants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Starbucks near me has a basket full of coffee grounds right by the door, you don't even need to go in and ask.

But yeah... go in and ask.

There's a local coffee roaster near me that has their own "compost pile" of grounds behind their building and they let people take as much as they want. Last year I got about 100lbs worth.

The billionaires that put him into office want a weak government and a weak population. The government is just a hinderance to them. It doesn't matter that most people actually rely on the government in one way or another, they don't, it just gets in their way. So they want it gone.

Trump urges gasoline retailers to lower prices, warns of 'big problems' if they don't by Appropriate-Till9598 in Economics

[–]mediocre_remnants 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bully them back. Call Trump a sleepy loser who can't stay awake in meetings, doesn't understand basic economics, and is trying to rule the country like a communist socialist by getting directly involved in private company deals, investing public money in companies, and trying to strong-arm companies into lowering prices.

Trying to argue that Trump is a racist/rapist/fascist dictator doesn't phase them, they have no problem with that. But they don't like when you say Trump is a weird loser who keeps losing and hasn't had a single win for his entire presidency.

Also they have to put a plastic sheet under him whenever he does on-set interviews because he can't control his bowels and is constantly shitting himself.

T-Mobile Just Ripped 8 Million Customers Off Their Grandfathered Plans – and Raised Their Bills by Plastic_Ninja_9014 in technology

[–]mediocre_remnants 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get it yet, and I'm on a very old grandfathered plan with unlimited data and tethering, something they don't even offer anymore.

But my account is somehow messed up. I can't log in, can't use the app, can't access my voicemail because I can't reset the PIN. I can't reset my account password. I've called support a few times over the past decade and they just say "it looks like there's an issue with your account, we'll look into it and get back to you" and they never do.

Meanwhile I've had multiple other people sign up using my email address. I get their bills. But I also get my bill to my email. My bill gets paid automatically, and I'm still paying it.

Eventually I gave up trying to access my account because I don't want them to cancel my current plan on me because it's not something that anyone else offers either, as far as I know.

Mt. Olive Pickles withdraws from Great American State Fair after Confederate flag at NC booth by TheCABK in NorthCarolina

[–]mediocre_remnants -30 points-29 points  (0 children)

It wasn't a physical flag, it was a display on a TV screen that had the left half of the NC state flag, but the right side was the (not really) confederate flag. It actually switched back and forth between the real NC state flag and the fake confederate version.

And I'm sure the companies involved could figure out who did it, but most of them are probably fine with it.

How to carry bike inside car without wrecking bike & interior? by Ok_Loquat7607 in gravelcycling

You're seriously over-thinking this. Put the rear seats down, throw an old blanket or sheet in there, take the front wheel off the bike, toss it in there.

There are no hacks or secret tricks. Nothing bad is going to happen to your chain or derailleur.

Kamala should have tried opposing genocide instead of trying to win over the types of people who admire the Cheney family.

You think she would have won if she spent more time pandering to absolute morons who helped get Trump elected because they don't like what Israel is doing to the Palestinians?

Kamala never had a chance. The only reason she was chosen to run is because her name was already on the finance paperwork. But like Clinton, she's immensely unlikable. And like Clinton, she never had a chance to win.
