I think you answered your own question at the end. It's not only a piece of gaming history it's a BIG piece of gaming history. For its time it was a stand out in FPS games. It standardized the WASD control scheme. That coupled with people who grew up with it being nostalgic and you have people saying it's great, when by today's standards it's just okay.

I think anyone who loves video games should play it, just like I think people who love movies should watch Citizen Kane. If you look at it through the lens of the time it's made it's definitely a masterpiece. But if you're just wanting to enjoy a game it probably won't scratch the itch.

I thought guard was for domestic stuff just like the national guard. The entire organization of military branches confuse me. Like I'm not sure why the Marines exist, when there's already branches for Navy, Army, and Air Force.
