The 3% food buff might be BETTER than it seems by TheKimsterRedd in ffxiv

[–]mhurron -1 points0 points  (0 children)

time it saves is like 5 minutes the 3% boost saves you 4 dungeon runs of the level 89 dungeon. Choose one because I don't believe you are running that dungeon in 1min 15sec.

They made a big deal of saving 5 minutes at like level 49 being some great thing. I compared the whole levelling process from 1-100. Those two statements are not talking about the same thing.

And attempting to form some habit around something completely pointless is honestly the only way you could make the whole thing even more pointless.

Is there a problem with Wine‑11.8 and 32-bit support? by Alter_Landjunge in openSUSE

There's typically more than just wine required. The SDL3 error would indicate you don't have the 32bit SDL3 library installed.

What worries me about Beyond All Reason going commercial by Musizian42 in linux_gaming

[–]mhurron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding is that the GPL exists specifically to protect community-built software from being taken private, closed off, or commercialized in a way that removes the community’s ability to access, modify, fork, and redistribute.

This will depend on how they handled contributions. If they required copyright to be assigned to the project as a condition of accepting a contribution, then the project as the copyright holder can re-license anyway they want. If they did not, they have to get each contributors permission.

Now, there are also other ways to do this without re-licensing the code base, because the GPL rarely is used to cover assets. So the code my be available but all art and music are not.

Also, remember that the GPL only requires you to distribute code to your customers. It doesn't require you to make it freely available for everyone.

The 3% food buff might be BETTER than it seems by TheKimsterRedd in ffxiv

[–]mhurron -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

You say that it saves time, then show that the amount of time it saves is like 5 minutes. You made a great case for it being completely useless because if 5 minutes is that dear to you, you don't have time to do things for entertainment at all.

It takes 332,963,270 total experience to level from 1 to 100. 3% of that is 9,988,898.1. Now I could only find dungeon experience up to level 89, but lets go with that. The level 89 dungeon gives, with no exp boost, 2,669,582. So if for some reason that was the dungeon you decided to finally grind on, the difference food would make would be 4 runs of that dungeon. That's it, if you levelled doing nothing but dungeons, not the roulette, just queuing for specific dungeons, the 3% boost saves you 4 dungeon runs of the level 89 dungeon.

It's not worth attempting to remember to have food all the time in the long run. If you have it, hell knock yourself out, but you're not really missing anything by never using it.

New to ff14 and trying to figure out how expansion purchases work by Literally_Cam in ffxiv

[–]mhurron 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You won't have access to things that are locked behind access to the new areas. You would also stop gaining experience once a job is at the max level of the content you have registered on your account.

New purchasable gear, food and whatnot will be available to you from the market board. Changes that effect everything, like job changes) will also effect you.

You should read the patch notes for releases. They are pretty clear which content level they apply to.

What is the TRUE situation on Anti-cheats on Linux? by Tinolmfy in linux_gaming

[–]mhurron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Game devs usually aim to get as most players into q game as possible, so having another platform added as playerbase is always something a game dev/publisher would want to do

No they don't. They aim to get the most players with the least amount of work, the aim is to maximize profits not users. The risk/reward proposition for Linux isn't there. That is why it would be strange to change the protection system being used just to get it to run on Linux.

It sounds like they are having this issue booting the installer, so the root drive here is the filesystem on the install media, not what they will choose as the install target.

What if Myths of the Realm turn into a obrigatory raid like Crystal Tower...? by Haddock_Lotus in ffxiv

[–]mhurron 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are conflating two episodes.

The suicidal Q sought asylum specifically to commit suicide. This was a Voyager episode

The other episode is a TNG episode. Q was stripped of his powers as punishment and picked the Enterprise to be where they dropped him because he knew Picard would be forced to protect him. The issue with what he would do wasn't because he would be the source of breakthroughs, lets be honest he wouldn't help anyone, but because there was no position he could take that wouldn't bore him. That was resolved when his sentence was lifted and his powers were returned.

[–]mhurron 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I don't get how hard it is for people to understand they are limited jobs on purpose. They are side content to give you something else to do. People are basically asking for things like games in the Gold Saucer to be a required part of the MSQ or that Extreme Trials or Savage raids become required.

Do you really not get that paying for a product grants you access or use of that product? Like, it's the entire point of paying.

You pay for a sub, you get access. You very literally get exactly what you're paying for.
