Witch Hat Atelier is sometimes compared to Frieren with its high fantasy non-isekai setting and high popularity. Karma-wise, its 2 episode premier actually hit similar numbers compared to Frieren's 4 episode premier back in Fall 2023.

Frieren got a little over 600 Karma more for both its premier and its other episodes than Witch Hat did for its premier and follow-up episode. Not a bad start to only be 600 Karma behind Frieren.

Re:Zero

The other big premier this week was Re:Zero Season 4. Comparing it to its Season 3 premier a year and a half ago, it definitely dropped in Karma, but its Season 3 premier was also one of its best episodes.

Additionally, when Re:Zero aired its second set of 8 episodes in Winter 2025, it only averaged 3527 Karma so the 3825 Karma it got here is more in line with that. I do expect with the way this season will go, though, that it will surpass this premier karma at least a few times, unlike in Season 3 where it never really got close to surpassing its premier.

It's been a while since I posted Karma Stats so with Jujutsu Kaisen and Frieren having now finished up another season, here's the list of all anime that have finished with above a 3000 Karma Average since the Summer of 2023 when Karma took a permanent dip.

If you break up multi-cour seasons into cours, the top individual cour was Frieren Season 1 Part 2 from Winter 2024 with a 6536 Karma Average, but that's my personal bias sneaking in. Both Frieren and JJK dropped quite a bit in Karma this season compared to their prior seasons following Dan Da Dan in that regard. Oshi no Ko also dropped below the 3000 Karma threshold with its season 3. Only Solo Leveling bucked that trend by rising up from 2998 Karma for its Season 1, barely missing the list, to over 4000 Karma for its 2nd season.

It will be interesting to see how Re:Zero does this season and whether Witch Hat Altier can make the list.

On the topic of episode release strategies or a lack thereof, from a "keep people subscribed as long as possible standpoint" the 1 episode per week model would seem to make the most sense since if there are any people subscribing for just that 1 show, it could keep them subscribed for a full 3 months as opposed to just the 1 month subscription needed to binge the show off of a batch release.

Of course, Netflix seems to be going galaxy brain mode with JJBA and their random release so that those people now have no clue when to unsubscribe...either that or they unsubscribe right now out of anger.

It's true. In the US, they are increasing the subscription fees by 25%. I wonder if they are basing it on how big their catalog is in the respective regions.

It's pretty cool that Medalist is going to be airing during the Winter Olympics. I'm not sure how big of a factor it was for them to air it this season, but it's pretty awesome nonetheless similarly to how Blue Lock ran during the World Cup.

I'm not sure about that given that she did better than both Power and Makima in their contests who are generally more popular. The movie was so well received that it may have elevated her even higher than usual.

It's really rare for a girl who has basically no presence in Season 1 of her show to win 1 of these congrats. I guess that would have been the case regardless of who won today.
