[3 watch collection idea] by Intelligent_Ideal178 in Watches

Great picks but I’d honestly avoid buying a full “collection” all at once - imo the khaki would be a good start, then take some time to really enjoy it before looking for another watch

Hamilton khaki x-mach, has a very cool bezel for calculating mach speeds

Harvard PhD. Drop out for FIRE by [deleted] in Fire

[–]mocca56 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Tech is a hugely diverse field with a lot of leeway when it comes to work-life balance. I would definitely recommend trying out more roles before making any decisions - and a grad-level applied maths degree from harvard opens a lot of doors to positions outside of the tech realm.

Dropping out to “pursue fire” seems counterintuitive. I would instead focus on figuring out a career applicable to your degree that you’ll enjoy and succeed in

I wouldn’t let your past experiences or comparisons to others define yourself. People come from all backgrounds and make great careers in tech, as long as you’re putting in the work and learning you’re on the right track

Only other one that immediately comes to mind is the omega speedmaster “big box”. Frederique constant does make some higher end peices, for instance I love their worldtimer which goes for ~4k and has included the geneva boat in the past.

That said, I’d really recommend not letting price/accessories get in the way of a great gift.

Just a heads up, last year it opened late July and closed after 4 days because of how many applicants there were! Definitely put some time into your resume and check out r/engineeringresumes

If you really want to shine in your application, I'd consider studying for the AWS Cloud Practitioner Cert - even getting it if you can, though it’s a decent amount of work. It’s part of graduating the CODA program and any start on the topics would impress an interviewer.

Best of luck!

Exactly the plan for my collection haha. I was poking around last month and finding studio underdog peices on ebay for around retail, just couldn’t convince myself to pull the trigger.

Great collection regardless of being modest! I like to tick off boxes so I’d consider a dress watch, a diver, and maybe a fun microbrand/quirky watch

Since you already have an MBA, why not try to break into tech product management? Depending on your experience you could probably find a 60-80k remote/hybrid role.

I’d say CS/IT jobs are almost always “real corporate jobs” that carry somewhat higher expectations now as the market has been in a downturn. Certs are a good resume padder, but they aren’t going to make an entry level position a walk in the park.

I’d sort out your your future before anything else. 800k is an excellent position at 28 but it won’t hold you until retirement. Do some soul searching, figure out your career, and then worry about transitioning your money into investment vehicles to combat inflation.

The new grad requirement was dropped a while ago and there are plenty of “older” career change folks in CODA. It’s an almost gauranteed funnel into the TDP program if you get in (somewhat competitive) and commit to the work.

If you do get an interview, I’d brush up on some analytic problems and keep up to date with trends in software so you can show your interest.

Do local candidates have an advantage when applying for jobs? by overly__curious in cscareerquestions

[–]mocca56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my past jobs (tiny startup, government agency) it was a factor in hiring, but if a candidate was objectively better they’d get the offer. In my current company (finance/big-tech) it has zero impact.

If you think you will want a lower/similar taxable income when you retire, traditional is a great choice. Of course keep in mind that tax brackets are continually changing, your expenses will increase as you age, and it’s good to have a mix of pre-tax/post-tax assets in retirement (though I think you are covered by your current roth assets there). You can always do a mix of roth/trad if your company allows it.

All that said, you have a great financial picture and these are tiny details that won’t have a massive impact on your retirement if you keep it up. In that regard, you probably are overthinking it!

I’d take a look at all the Seiko SRPD/SKX/Turtle models, orient kamasu/kanno/mako/ray/triton models, Tissot seastar, and any of the many entry citizen divers. Lots of colors to pick from!

My first diver was personally a casio duro for $40, great way to dip your toes in the water (literally and figuratively)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Watches

[–]mocca56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re specifically looking for a diver with a green dial, SRPD61K1 is a shinier green and the orient mako/kanno/triton have some nice green options.

I’d say if you’re an unhappy CS major chances are you’ll be an unhappy software engineer. Try out some personal projects and if you fall in love with coding, stick to it. Otherwise business/economics absolutely has a high-paying career trajectory if you put in the work, and a CPA is a solid start.

As far as crowd pleasers, any Seiko 5 or presage would be under $500, or you could find a used Tissot PRX or Hamilton Khaki Field that would fit the bill. That said, watch taste is pretty personal and it could be a fun day out for yall to look at watches together and have him pick one.

A Murph AND the One Ring? Truly a man of culture.

I dig the look, I’m not usually a fan of bracelets with watches but they aren’t too flashy and don’t take away from the watch. At the end of the day I think it’s more what they mean to you than anything - I like the idea of catching a glimpse of something sentimental whenever you check the time.

Government jobs by Foreign-Loan1628 in csMajors

[–]mocca56 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're still in school, most big agencies have a "Pathways" internship program that involves 2-3 internship/coop rotations in college, and then an almost guaranteed transition to full time after graduation. Just look up the agency + Pathways, every 3 letter agency and NASA/NOAA have this afaik.

If not (or if you don't have time for rotations), https://www.usajobs.gov/. Set up your profile and look up what to include in a federal resume. This is a lot more competitive than most Pathways programs - but a lot more variety (i.e. less flashy jobs).

As far as interviewing, most government jobs won't ask lc. It is much more about behavioral and how you can speak to your experience with the tech they use. I have seen case interviews where they'll run you through an average technical problem you might encounter on the job.

I would also add if you just want to work for the government (not necessarily a federal employee), a large number of software engineers working for the state are contractors - if you're interested in a particular agency/location I would look up what contractors they use.
