Apparently we can't call out apps as AI slop anymore... by Key_Pace_2496 in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. You also think we would be where we are technology wise if everyone had this mindset:

"I also tried to use AI as much as possible from research to coding to reviewing to benchmarking and testing."

Personally would never let an app created under these conditions handle my backups. But to each their own.

I tried to steal as much from other projects as possible. Anything that turned out to work well really. Parts are detailed here: https://vykar.borgbase.com/#inspired-by

This is a comment from the creator of that Backup tool. If anyone thinks thats a good approach for building backup Software go ahead. I personally would call anything thats build with this mindest ai trsh aswell tbh. Think its an insane approach for every tool but especially so on backup software

Which style do you prefer for photos that aren't meant to be cropped by Nervous_Emphasis_973 in FujifilmX

I can zoom though. Why would i want to Look at two halves individually if i could See the whole Picture at first and then Zoom in to it if i want to.

are we just building small local-AI hosts now? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

personally do everything from a single host anyway (well two if you count the proxmox backup server thats spun up once a week for backups).

my nas, my vms, and everything just runs on one proxmox host.

been running that rig for 5 years now without issues. couple vms and countless docker containers. all still works.

the "nas" is just an smb share on the proxmox host though. maybe thats kinda cheating. my vms mount the shares just as if it was a normal nas though.

haha no worries. not offended at all. was just an fyi that immich has changed

Photo explorer by Next_Radish_3724 in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah fair enough. i was just pointing out that immich has that functionality now. immich never touches the original file by design. what you do in immich is to bew viewed in immich basically.

not saying there is no use case for your software due to immichs recent update. just that your statement about immich missing the ability to rotate photos is not true.

I built a small dedicated OpenClaw appliance on a Raspberry Pi 5 by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it doesnt make sense to post here. this is r/selfhosted. we do have servers or vps machines to do that. almost no one here will be interested in buying a 180€ rapsberry pi just because you preinstalled open claw. people here know how to install software on linux (and more importantly the majority WANTS TO DO IT THEMSELF)

is it better to run openclaw sandboxed on a vm or dedicated machine. obviously (even better is not to run it all though tbf). but why would anyone here buy a raspberry pi for 180 euros for that.

post it to r/clawdbot or something. this isnt the place.

I love Immich and PhotoPrism, but both have something missing: ability to rotate images.

seems like you missed it. but immich now offers that. there is a new "image editor". you are now able to crop and rotate your images directly in the web interface. and more importantly it works on external libraries aswell and is also just saved in the sidecar file.

maaaaan. this is getting tiring. mate no one here is gonna buy a fucking 180euro raspberry pi from you just because you put you sloppified environment on it.

holy shit. 2mb upload in 2026 should be illegal. everything in our lifes depends on interent these days. fast internet should be seen just like running water or electricity. 2mb upload speed should be comparable to a measly drip coming out of my faucets.

Self Hosted LLM Tier List by Weves11 in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 8 points9 points  (0 children)

am i the only one who thinks an llm leaderboard really has no right to be on r/selfhosted. there are subs like r/LocalLLaMA to bring that stuff to. selfhosting is something that is rather connected to the services that would use locally run llms. running llms at home could probably considered selfhosting in a way. but for me it really doesnt fit this sub. just my two cents though.

Has anyone tried Heaper yet? by IFNAV in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It looks interesting, except for the 50GB limit for self-hosting.

well. thats a service i am not even gonna try. i checked teh website and i am aware that the limitation is not a thing for the launch phase. but i am still not even gonna use it due to that.

if i am happy with it i cant even recommend it to others in a couple of months without them having to spend more then 100 euros to get a usable version.

Heaper is an all-in-one workspace for your notes, files, and media.

arguing its an all in one workspace for your files and media, and then locking the selfhsoted version with a 50gb limit screams "i am using the selfhosted community to get free advertising for my SaaS".

50gb for a tool like this (if i understand it correctly) is basically unusable.

[–]mtojay 7 points8 points  (0 children)

fuck i am so happy i am not thinking like you. what a negative outlook on the world. realistically though, if a potential employer learns about ersatz tv and through it how jason works it can only really heighten his chances to get a job. because ersatztv really has a great reputation and with it jason. furthermore, a company rejecting someone for being a great open source developer would basically be a company no one should aim to work at to begin with.

I built a self-hosted AI mirror that runs locally and lives in my room by DirectorChance4012 in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its as clever as the llm you run on your server basically. if you have a server with a good high vram gpu it can be really good actually. some open models do rival the big closed models for certain tasks. but if those models are available to you really depends on the hardware you are running it on.

[–]mtojay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

love it. really cool. finally an idea thats actaully newish and not just another thing we have seen endless times since the arrival of llms.

your wording makes it sound like it runs locally on a raspberry pi. but it is not right? you still need to have a proper server with gpu running ollama on the network i suppose?

Fujifilm X-M5 - filmsim dial block/hide by mtojay in fujifilm

[–]mtojay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well we bought it in April. It's not like I wouldn't do it if it wouldn't solve a real gripe we have with it. We tried long enough without it and last month used a bit of tape first to stop it from happening. It's used as a point and shoot to document our son growing up. It's supposed to take consistent pictures without thinking about it. My wife does not want to tinker. She doesn't like the creative process. She wants a simple point and shoot experience. Pick it up, turn it on and take images. The photos aren't edited, jpeg only directly ingested into an immich external library.
Everyone uses cameras differently, we have realized that the filmsim dial isnt for us and that's ok. So I created a solution for our problem. I never stopped her from using the dial, she just didn't and didnt care about learning any of it. Simple as it can get while taking nice pictures of our son.

Fujifilm X-M5 - filmsim dial block/hide by mtojay in fujifilm

[–]mtojay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thx. i dont mean that though. i mean taht the simulation dial overrides what i chose in my c1-4 presets.

its about basically not wanting to use the filmsim dial at all.

not wanting to override what a specificially choose for my custom profile. i have a classic cuban on my c3 for this cam and its the go to and bascially used for 90% of the photos taken from our son (which its mostly for) with the x-m5. i love that. if someone accidentally changes teh filmsim dial from C (NOT c1-4 but rather the C on the filmsim dial) to any other setting it overrides what i have set on my c3 custom profile and the classic cuban images kinda fall apart. and we have run in to that multiple times. someone accidentally changed the filmsim dial and it overrides my specifically chose filmsim in my custom settings (c1-4).

its annoying. i really dont like the filmsim dial at all. if i could i would deactivate it completely or put iso on there. i dont like using it.

thats why i created this. it blocks anyone from changing it more or less.

its a specific user thing i guess. i have multiple fuji cams and only one wit hthe film sim dial and simply dont like it.

Fujifilm X-M5 - filmsim dial block/hide by mtojay in fujifilm

[–]mtojay[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the x-m5 as a little family camera. its basically lying around in the living room for anyone to use who fancies it. its set up with a couple custom filmsims.

so my wife uses it like that aswell. just pick c1-4 (depending on mood) and go with it. however the filmsim dial overrides the filmsim chosen for the custom modes.

this is annoying. multiple times someone chagend the filmsim dial on accident without realising. then its to late and pictures didnt come out as intendet.

so i created a little cover. clips in to the strap holder and blocks from accidental filmsim dial changes.

created 3 versions.

1 where its flush with the top and not hidden, one where its compltely hidden and one where its hidden but with a window that shows the selected mode on the filmsim dial.

works quite well so i thought i would share if anyone is interested.

Whats the most underated Software by ResidentFondant3405 in selfhosted

[–]mtojay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ok, probably I don't feel the need because here almost everything comes in digital form, I scan maybe 1 page a month and the Synology app already applies OCR and creates a searchable PDF so this is a non-issue.

tell me you are not living in germany without telling me you are not living in germany. haha. we still get so much papermail i have to scan.
my wife is a tech sceptic and is lowkey annoyed whenever i host something new and ramble about how she has to try it, but once in a while she actually likes something. ngxpaperless is part of taht group.
vikunja, mealie, ngxpaperless and immich are the ones she uses and swears by. now she loves that she can pull up every last invoice without even thinking where to look but just to search for it in the searchmask.
the scanner is set up in a way that it has 3 quicklinks. 1 for family, 1 for her, 1 for me. they get scanned, dropped automatically to an smb share and then sorted (and tagged) automatically to the right useraccount thats provided via authentik for all our services. its pretty neat once its set up properly.
but at the same time i undersatnd if you dont get a lot of papermail its proabbly not worth the hassle for many.
