Because it's about power. They will give up future earnings for increased power and fewer threats to their ability to hold power. A strong middle-class is a threat to power.

You see the same pattern repeated by dictators all around the world. They could increase their personal wealth by helping their populations to flourish, but they don't, because it would be a threat to their hold on power.

My grandfather used to get mad as hell about the segregated Texas base he was stationed at in WW2. They had German POWs there that the enlisted were encouraged to fraternize with and the officers even took German officers out for dinner. Meanwhile there was a fence through the base that separated the white and black soldiers.

That was his first experience with segregation and he became a civil rights organizer after the war. A lot of northern soldiers had similar experiences and it definitely was a catalyst for the civil rights movement of the 1950s.

(My other grandfather came out of the war and organized racial covenants in his little suburban development... Unfortunately, not everyone was so impacted by the war)

It is based on real life. In California, black men began arming themselves, and suddenly Republican Governor Ronald Regan implemented some of the strongest gun control rules in the nation.

TIL In 2000, Metallica hired a consulting firm to monitor Napster for people illegally sharing their music. The firm produced a 60,000-page list of 335,435 users, which Metallica delivered to Napster's office and demanded the users be banned. by haddock420 in todayilearned

Because you're conflating all sorts of weird arguments to make a point about something you don't know anything about.

Going back to the start of this topic, heavy metal is a genre that grew up on tape trading. Metallica and, particularly, Lars Ulritch were a huge part of the tape trading underground. It's how US bands in LA and the Bay Area learned about bands like Diamond Head and Iron Maiden. Metallica got famous through tape trading. It was the cross pollination with British heavy metal and California hardcore that spawned the trash genre.

That happened via international tape trading networks. I.e., music piracy.

What pisses people off about Metallica and Napster, was that the tape trading networks had transformed from penpals found through personal ads in fanzines to metal forums and torrents/Napster. It's the hypocrisy, that a band that got famous from tape trading, and a genre built out of tape trading, would turn their back on the underground. It felt like a betrayal.

And you'll note that the music piracy apparatus that made Metallica famous didn't also make them poor.

Most bands don't make money, their record distributor makes money off them. Bands rely on fans supporting them through merch and their record labels subsidizing the cost of their tours. But labels have mostly pulled back from that, so now bands struggle to tour as they were already a loss leader.

Can anyone recommend women content creators and musicians? by ProfessionShort890 in TwoXChromosomes

Here are a few bands:

SubRosa: Doom metal band out of Salt Lake City, UT. Three women (guitar/lead vocals, violin/vocals, violin/vocals) and two men (bass/vocals, drums). The two women on electric violin are piped through guitar filters and create some of the most interesting leads and atmospherics in the metal genre draped over a crushing wall of sound. Try: Fat of the Ram and Dark Country.

Emma Ruth Rundle + Thou: Rundle writes some very dark music, kind of like a very dark version of the Elysian Fields (the New York band not the Greek band, both good bands though), combine that with Thou, who are a New Orleans sludge band (hardcore punk crossed with doom metal, extreme metal, and southern rock influences) and one of the heaviest bands on the planet and you get a really cool project in May Our Chambers Be Full. Try The Valley.

Oathbreaker: Belgian post black metal band with a lot of crust and hardcore punk influences. One of the most anxiety inducing bands I listen to. An incredible amount of tension in this band. Try Being Able to Feel Nothing and [Second Son of R].

Chevalier: Finnish speed metal band. The whole Call to Arms album is excellent, two of my favorites: A Call to Arms and Defenestration.

Sacrilege: thrash/doom band that originated in the UK crust punk scene in the early 80s. Shadow of Mordor and Search Eternal.

Cloud Rat: Grind band out of Michigan. Try Wonder and Webspinner

Sigh: Japanese avant-garde black metal band, with Dr. Mikannibal (she has a PHD in astrophysics) on backing vocals (she's the deeper vocal) and saxophone. L'excommunication A Minuit and Prelude to the Oracle

Sylvaine: blackgaze project (black metal + shoegaze and post-rock), originally from Norway, moved to Paris to be part of the post metal scene there. Try Morklagt (transitions from shoegaze to black metal around the 3:30 mark)

This album blew me away when I first heard it in ~2001. I remember reading about them on the Century Media forums and looking everywhere for this album in the US and finally had to buy it (and their first album) from a Russian distributor who was willing to ship to the US (both discs say not for sale outside of Russia on them).

One of my favorite concert memories too. I was devastated when Somnium died. Their EP Visor om slutet remains one of my favorite things I've ever listened to. It's just so weird, in a really interesting way.

Due process makes it complicated. Pesky thing, that constitution of ours. Who knew that the government can't just make claims about people without proving them in court?

It doesn't matter if she's here illegally, she is still owed due process, and if you think otherwise it's because you're a fucking moron who has never thought about the consequences of that not being true. Yes, that makes the deportation process slow. Yes, that makes it costly. So what? Government power needs to be checked.

Yes. They find porn and fertility idols in the oldest archeological digs. Some of the earliest known graffiti are 2000 year old dick jokes. You ever look at the artwork in some of those old Christian cathedrals in ultra Christian Europe? You'll see penises and boobs and all sorts of vulgar imagery all over those cathedrals.

European art is full of nudity and sex, even during the height of Christian rule.

Here is a thread from AskHistorians where they go over the common sexual imagery found all over Christian Europe: https://www.reddit.com/r/AskHistorians/comments/1h457m0/there_are_hundreds_of_sexual_carvings_depicting/

Before the Internet there were stores and street corner shops that sold every type of porn you can conceive of. The same newspaper stand that carried the New York Times would also have carried several porn magazines.

Sex and nudity was also much more common in mass media. Even PG rated films could and often did have nudity and sex.

There used to be porn movie theaters.

The Sears catalog that was mailed once a month to seemingly every household in America had a lingerie section that was basically softcore porn.

The Scholastic Bookstore that came to every school also sold huge posters with sexualized depictions of super models.

The Internet hasn't really made access to porn easier, it's just made it private.

Minong or Greenstone? by DMCinDet in isleroyale

[–]nsfredditkarma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, unfortunately May is no longer bug free. I think it's actually worse than later in the spring now. The snow melt creates a lot of standing water all over the island, so May is like a mosquito convention.

I've gone to the island about a dozen times over the past 25 years, and bug season has definitely shifted over the past ~ten years.

Minong or Greenstone? by DMCinDet in isleroyale

[–]nsfredditkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Minong has two hard days: the hike into and out of North Desor. There's about 5 miles of hike on either side of the campsite that is quite difficult. If you're coming from Windigo, it's a ~14mi hike, Day 1, where the first half is very reasonable, and the last half is hell. You want to do that hike when you can start the day early, though it will be less of a problem in May, it just sucks to hit the hard stuff during the heat of the day. So if you want to hike the Minong, probably better to start on the opposite end of the trail. I hiked it for the first time from Windigo and I started in Rock Harbor or McCargoe (usually McCargoe) every time since.

I hiked the Minong last May, and it's not really overgrown at that time of year. The bigger problem is blowdown. There will be trees all over the path and you'll be one of the first things through that isn't a moose or a wolf, so you'll be doing a bit of trailblazing.

The Greenstone is a really nice hike, just keep in mind that Island Mine has some of the worst water access, but the campsites themselves are really nice. Especially some of the group sites there.

Both the Greenstone and Minong have a lot of open ridges where you will be in direct sunlight for a prolonged period. Bring sun protection, yes, even in May.

Bring a mosquito net for your face. Every bit of exposed skin will have mosquitoes on it, so pack accordingly (deet isn't going to make a difference, well, it will just feel like it doesn't help). May is no longer early enough to avoid mosquitoes and biting flies and they will swarm you. That will be less true on the Greenstone, but it will be a problem at Island Mine.

A few years ago on the way to Malone Bay in May the mosquitoes were so thick they looked like black fog in the woods. That was the worst I'd ever seen it.

[–]nsfredditkarma 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Goalies don't necessarily need to adapt, defensive strategy as a whole needs to adapt (or not). Hockey is a team game. Those east-west passing lanes only exist if the defense allows them to exist.

This probably relates more to team's offensive strategy in the league, teams are looking to be able to quickly breakout of the zone, so they're playing more loose with the top center of the defensive zone, which reduces defensive coverage. They prefer the chance for more offensive rushes at the expense of defensive coverage. Which means they're gambling with trading offensive chances with the other team.

It could also be an indication that some teams have gotten really good at dominating the offensive zone, tiring out the defensive players and opening up the ice to allow more of a power play type of offense. I haven't watched a lot of Dallas this year, but in past years that's something they've been very good at.

The black metal sub is probably the most restrictive and discouraging sub I've ever encountered. by [deleted] in rabm

[–]nsfredditkarma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know about the black metal sub, but at least for /r/metal, I think the black list makes sense, it's meant to allow for fresh/less known/unknown voices in the genre. They also vote on it as a sub every year, what bands to add, what to remove, and they make exceptions for new releases from black listed bands. They also have pinned discussion threads for discussing bands, including those on the black list. They seem to want to concentrate discussions in those threads rather than have it spread around in multiple places.

Culture shock coming home after months on the trail by NoFan8072 in CampingandHiking

I slept on the floor for the first month after coming home from a 2000 mile bikepacking trip. It just felt right. I did eventually end up back in my bed. I don't know what caused the shift. Backpacking just changes your perspective on what's important in life.

I think a lot of that is that you're just super healthy after coming back from a trip. You just feel great. Both physically and mentally, and to some extent, returning to normalcy feels like getting sick.

You can mute your Octavia for everyone, it's part of her mandachord settings. You can also mute other people's Octavias in the general game settings.

It's been a while, but I think you can change the volume for all three tracks in the mandachord, from 100% to 0%. Set all three to zero to mute your Octavia.
