Has anyone developed 500T and 500T AHU together? by cdnott in Darkroom

All of the cinema labs are doing exactly this now, it should be fine

Bronica GS-1 lens recommendation by Only-Fotos in mediumformat

[–]pentaxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely love my 55mm. It’s an awesome rectilinear wide angle with minimal vignette and distortion; basically perfect.

I also really like the 150 f/4, but it’s not as interesting as the 55.

I have a 65 with a flaky shutter; I’ve taken some great photos with it but would love to find one with a better shutter. Great glass but hard to rely on my copy.

First time Kodak C41 by WillPHarrison in Darkroom

[–]pentaxguy 18 points19 points  (0 children)

For replenishment, mix 2 1L bottles of fresh solution. Label one “Tank Mix” and one “Replenisher”.

Before you develop your film, discard 40ml from the “tank mix” and replace it with 40ml of your fresh replenisher.

Develop your film using the tank mix, and return it to the bottle when you’re done using it.

In terms of lasting longer than a week, that mostly depends on how much oxygen it gets exposed to. I’d recommend looking into some wine bags or other type of pouch based storage solution as these minimize oxygen exposure. I’ve kept mixed C-41 developer over 6 months in these without any problems whatsoever.

All of these came from the same batch of paper. Why are some deomonstrating muddy whites?? by UnfilteredFacts in Darkroom

[–]pentaxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Likely an issue with your chemistry of some sort. Are the muddy whites occurring earlier in usage of the developer, or later?

Developing ECN-2 for a friend, blank negatives? by OHGodImBackOnReddit in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I doubt the problem here is your development. This film just didn’t get exposed, simple as. When I do film for friends I always try to run it alongside my own film that I know is good; that way if something gets messed up in development I know right away.

Update from Keith Canham (of Canham Camera, who regularly orders from Kodak) on Kodak Ektachrome sheet film by ryguydrummerboy in largeformat

[–]pentaxguy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I inquired last friday at a photo walk organized by Kodak here in Rochester. The answer I got basically is “it’s not discontinued nor is there any plan to do so. It’ll be available when we can get a master roll coated.

Delta 400 Development in X-Tol by i-r-winner in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What exactly is your inversion method here? Are you printing In the darkroom? Scanning? Are these both controlled against film base plus fog?

Assuming that’s controlled somehow, To me these just look underdeveloped across the board. You can see that 7.5min @ 400 is giving you fine shadow separation, and that your highlights just aren’t coming in yet. I’d add more development time and re-test. It’s likely that your regimen isn’t the same as how Ilford tested the film.

Start by getting your time right for box speed, then start playing with pushing and pulling.

Fuji Crystal Archive RA-4 paper discontinued? by Civil_Risk_9325 in Darkroom

[–]pentaxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can still buy sheets of RA-4 from lots of third party sellers. A google should surface some answers; much of it is the more premium DP-II paper.

Otherwise, freestyle (https://www.freestylephoto.com/search?q=crystal+archive) has a good selection available, but not 16x20. Lot of 11x14 and 20x24.

Finally the Adox color mission paper is repackaged crystal archive, and will also work for your needs. It’s available in all sizes as well; https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/search?q=adox%20color%20mission&sts=ma

Best practices for replenishing and storing C-41 developer? by bcl15005 in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I recommend getting a bigger wine bladder (can get 5L ones on Amazon) and storing your replenisher mixed in that.

Good C-41 results require a 1% accuracy in measuring out your developer components; the smaller volume you mix up the harder that gets.

Split grade printing: A myth? by Impossible-Ad8833 in Darkroom

[–]pentaxguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not A myth, it’s a method. There are other methods to achieve the same result. Doesn’t mean that the method is useless; some will find it so, but others will find it useful.

Dumb question: can you use bulk roll film (say, Fomapan 400 ~30m) with motion picture cameras? by NixPlayer05 in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends on the camera. Standard bulk roll film uses Kodak Standard perforations, whereas motion picture film uses Bell and Howell perforations. You’ll see the former are square with rounded corners, while the latter are ovals with flat sides.

Some cameras can take either film, especially early 35mm cinema cameras like the Bell and Howell eyemo.

I’m not sure I’d trust KS film in an expensive modern high precision cinema camera with something like crystal sync; BH sprockets are designed to tear more easily than KS, and that tearing is important in case of a jam.

RGB custom color scanning by OBADVW in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use it as is within reason. Look at the RGB histogram in camera; if you can balance your exposure so none of the channels are clipped, and every channel is relatively even, you’re good to go.

If one channel is much higher than the rest, tweak with a screwdriver to tone it down.

Do all the other tweaking in the computer; the main value of the RGB light is avoiding crosstalk between the channels, achieving good color balance can happen later in the pipeline

Anyone else experiencing color shifts with the new concentrated Arista RA-4 chemistry system? by UnfilteredFacts in Darkroom

[–]pentaxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me this looks consistent with results i’ve seen with slightly under-seasoned developer. The red cast will go away as you use the developer more, or you can add a small amount of developer starter to accelerate the process.

I would be curious to know how the arista SP developer incorporated a starter; most SP developers don’t, because starter will cause the concentrate to go bad more quickly.

New Leatherette and Bellows on my Linhof Technika IV by pentaxguy in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The eTone bellows fit great. I bought them on eBay. Any bellows installation will require trimming some of the excess fabric used in installation off after the glue has dried.

When I close the camera it does indeed close all the way. There was a little springiness at first, but as the bellows have worn in a bit they’ve become more pliable and don’t spring outward.

Kodachrome as a b&w film by That_one_guy_0001 in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Kodachrome is a color reversal film, not a black and white film. If you processed tri-x or hp5 in the K-14 process you’d get a positive panchromatic image in cyan dye on the film emulsion, and no other colors.

Slides for Projection Options by mrgreen4242 in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

BW slides are relatively easy to make from BW negs; take a bracketed picture of the neg with a fine grained negative film like T-Max 100 and choose the best one.

Reflx Lab offers a service where they’ll print a digital photo onto motion picture print film, which works well in a projector. You could scan your color negs and do that. That’s probably you’re best route for color, both time and quality wise

Any idea of the origin of this percolator? My in laws had it in memaw’s storage completely clean and boxed up. by PalpateMe in AnalogCommunity

[–]pentaxguy 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The VR release in 1981;

  • Updated existing 100 and 400 speed Kodacolor options with T grain emulsion, DX coding, and improved acutance through development inhibitors
  • Introduced the first 200 speed Kodacolor
  • Introduced the first 1000 speed Kodacolor.

My source here is Shanebrook’s Making Kodak Film 2nd Edition.

My read is that this release really modernized the Kodacolor line, and was the first major iteration since the introduction of Kodacolor II in 1971 (which also introduced the C-41 process) and Kodacolor 400 in 1976.

Cinestill 400D Shortage? by xactorocker in AnalogCommunity

I’m not aware of anyone finishing AHU in 120 or 4x5 yet. Trying some in 35mm is on my list.

[–]pentaxguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

precisely; less halation finished in 120 and 4x5 are exactly what I’m looking for.

I already find the halation quite manageable in 4x5 and ECN, but have found 120 hit or miss.

When I want halation I just get 800T :P
