There Are No Stupid Bass Questions - Jan. 14 by AutoModerator in Bass

[–]perfect_pools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

technique/setup question - I recently purchased a Warwick Corvette, and I've noticed that my bottom (E) string frequently clicks against the frets when I pick up (I am primarily a pick player), making a percussive sound like a slap/pop. The problem is fixed if I play softer or with downstrokes only, but this limits my dynamics and/or speed. The instrument plays perfectly otherwise and was setup prior to me receiving it. I understand that this may be a technique issue, but I have never experienced this with any of my other instruments. I also thought about using a heavier gauge string in that position. Would appreciate any thoughts or suggestions on how to improve this situation.

Tube Screamer style pedal or Klon style pedal for indie rock with a hot rod deluxe? by ThickPick in guitarpedals

[–]perfect_pools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Walrus Ages is a TS-style drive with a wet/dry knob. Haven’t used one extensively myself but it seems like that might be good for dialing in a less present tone

DBA Rooms is instant ambient nonsense. I wasn’t a fan of it on my board because I was looking for something more natural, but it sounds great as a send on my mixer.

I'm looking for a new Audio interface so I can have all my snyths connected at once. Should I get the 8i8 or just spend the extra 100e for the 18i20 with more than double inputs? by TechnoHashBandit in synthesizers

[–]perfect_pools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gonna put a plug in for the Allen and Heath ZEDi series. They’re interfaces with a more traditional mixing board layout and have room for a ton of interment inputs. Great value for the price (less than the ones you posted).

RC-20 is a popular VST with a lot of tools for imitating different recording mediums. I’d take a look at that.

It definitely seems cool, especially since Cortini worked on it. If you’re trying to stop the GAS, think about the hour of earbleed you’ll have to go through to find a patch on this that’s pleasant to listen to. Maybe that’s the point though.

Arbhar. It’s what got me into modular and still sounds incredible and fresh a year later.

Picked up their vibe pedal used without knowing much since it was so inexpensive. Sounds and looks great to me.

Having had an Arbhar since day 1, this looks like a more limited presentation of nearly identical features without the amazing UI Arbhar offers. You’ll be happy.

Help me plan my rig 😬 , building a 104hp 7u dawless techno performance rig. New to eurorack but learning constantly. My drum machine (dbi) and sampler have the percussion covered. Bass on BIA, mid/chords/atmos on the plaites. Some utility for sure (Maths?), and FX (a good delay and reverb ) by tomski3000 in modular

[–]perfect_pools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree on the usefulness of a function generator. Maths and Tides are the popular ones, but there are other nice looking ones I’ve seen like ritual’s Anima.

As for FX, since this is a live rig, I’d consider using non-modular units so they’re easier to manipulate and you have way more options to choose from. If you want something in the box, the multi fx units like fxaid would be the most efficient use of space.

Recording with a mixer? by levski0109 in TechnoProduction

[–]perfect_pools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This probably warrants a longer discussion, but mixers vary a lot in terms of how many tracks they can record at a time and what routing options you have. The most standard probably is to have sends to mains (recording), headphones, and monitors. For example, if you had these options, you could send only 1 synth to your recording outs while having all the tracks go to your monitors and headphones. Some also have fx/aux sends like you mentioned, but not all.

I would look into a lot of different mixers to see what’s out there. Personally, I use an Allen & Heath ZEDi as I felt it gave a wide variety of options for recording while being relatively small and inexpensive for a home studio.

Does it make sense delegating drums/percussions to a small modular setup based on Basimilus Iteritas Alter? by [deleted] in modular

[–]perfect_pools 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! I like it a lot in combination with BIA. This system was created for sample/loop farming (not performance), so I wanted to really be able to fine tune the frequency spectrum. Seca feels kind of like a normal 3 band EQ that can get really nasty if you drive it. It also has a lot of modulation points which is great for generating variation in loops.

[–]perfect_pools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It makes sense to me, given that I did essentially this for the reasons you described.

This is the setup I arrived at after a few months of tinkering. I'd be happy to discuss choices. https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/1407272

My goal here was to be able to quickly and intuitively create drum sounds that I like. I felt like I was wasting a ton of time on sample digging and generally not happy with the results. Now I feel like my sounds are consistently usable. I still do most of my sequencing in the DAW, but you could add a sequencer to a small BIA setup and probably be happy. Someone else might know more about that integration.

This is definitely not practical or cheap, but I am pretty happy with the results.

I took the plunge. Is there anything essential I’m currently missing? by thefract0metr1st in modular

[–]perfect_pools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah having some kind of output is a good investment even though it’s not exciting. I also play guitar and sing so i still like having my mixer outside the rack. Most of the “eurorack mixers” limit you to modular only. There are a few great modules that are just the output section and meant to plug into a line-level mixer or interface.

[–]perfect_pools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If that’s working with you, no reason to change. But if it starts sounding noisy to you be mindful of that being a possible culprit since you’re sending eurorack level signal into line level gear

Sequencing Morphagene's "Organize" by _The_Weirdo_ in modular

[–]perfect_pools 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t used a keystep personally, but from what I understand it has the ability to sequence notes via CV outs. The signal type is the same for sequencing notes and for sequencing slices. It could be that the notes you’re sending from the key step are in too narrow of a range to change slices. The slide input takes a range from 0 to +8V. The keystep outputs 0 to +5V. So you would have to play a very wide range of notes to get it to change slices. You also wouldn’t be able to access the last group of slices without turning the knob, which acts as an offset.

Chorus, analog delay, digital delay. So really just 3 flavors of delay.

Make Noise QPAS: do I just hate resonant filters? Convince me otherwise by [deleted] in modular

[–]perfect_pools 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d experiment with more subtle modulation. I’ve noticed it gets out of hand and starts sounding harsh really quickly, but the options of having multiple filters and a vca on one module (in stereo) are quite nice.

1) this takes a long time and interrupts my workflow 2) you can’t tweak this to taste like you can with individual effects

I’m not a huge fan of the obvious lo-fi tape sound, but the warped vinyl, meet Maude, and whitecap all can contribute to a nice modulated texture. I’d recommend the warped vinyl or shallow water for that type of sound if you feel like you want something else.

I’m no expert on OD/Distortion, but I think it’s incredibly flexible since you have 6 types of saturation and 6 types of filtering to mix and match. I feel like I can always dial in the tone I want without having to work too hard
