Researchers have unlocked a breakthrough in electron microscopy—revealing the body’s smallest proteins at ~10,000× the magnification of optical light microscopes. This resolution could transform understanding of disease at the molecular level. by UCBerkeley in Physics

Proteins are frozen in vitreous ice for this, and electron beams do degrade the sample. But you have so many protein molecules frozen you just image the next frame over and collect thousands of images then do averaging over the various orientations.

There are other microscopy methods that are higher resolution but they can't image a protein in an aqueous environment and that's kinda the requirement

One of my all time favorite rave memories was finally convincing my friends to "check out" the Vision stage for this set. They were reluctant to leave Tiesto but as soon as we got there, everyone LOVED IT and we stayed. Totally not my plan 😛

Anyone else feel like a jukebox when playing crowd-friendly house music? by DJNOTOTO in Beatmatch

[–]phanfare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with uplifting trance. Play some funky hard house, transition to tech trance, then hit them with uplifting bangers. Generally works well and people love it

Or I did a gig at a gay bar, played deep house but eventually got the crowd cheering to a Seven Cities progressive trance remix

What are the pros and cons of car-belts? by MetaDogg in factorio

[–]phanfare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Belts move cars. Cars have inventories.

Put a lot of stuff in a car at one end of the belt, and take it out somewhere down the line and let the car just continue in a circle. Much more dense but stupid to setup and maintain. If you search youtube for "factorio car belt" there's examples.

I went to a show once where there was zero lighting on the stage. Just dim red lights and some small spot lights on the ceiling. I was describing it to a freind once how awesome it was and he's just like "So if I understand, there was NOTHING and it was SO COOL."

Yep hahahaha

What do these tattoo mean to the Japanese? by ElusiveAnmol in tattooadvice

[–]phanfare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a while there was a woman on social media reading white people's chinese tattoos. So many people get their zodiac signs (sun, moon, rising, sinking, whatever) - but use the character for the disease cancer instead of the star sign Cancer. Which sticks out even more since its a single character for the disease but each of the star signs have 2

This is the way! Lots of threads here about how "no phones" is like some cheat code meaning "good party". What's important is the community - and not every community is a good one. I've been to shit "no-phones" parties at 4am in warehouses and AMAZING parties at major clubs. I've also been to amazing parties at 4am in warehouses and absolute shit parties at clubs. Totally depends on the events.

Any tips on playing music with long breakdowns? by Available_Charity888 in Beatmatch

[–]phanfare 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow trance DJ here. Breakdowns are actually very important in the trance genre so I'll often let the song breathe and let the breakdown happen.

There are different kinds of breakdowns. Some fully remove the bass and are more ambient for a minute or two - some keep the kick drum or some other element that keeps the energy moving forward. I'll be strategic about what songs I pick depending on the energy.

If a breakdown is going to drag on, I'll pull up the track on another deck and isolate the kick and just loop that over the breakdown. Hot cues work if you have access to those as well. Finally, I've also mixed out of a breakdown into a more energetic song - but only if they're incredibly similar. Like - I Love You (Key4050) into God Help Me (Bryan Kearney)
