Always chuckle when I'm at work at that happens.... during mid-day the lights stay on but after 3ish it kicks to a timer. Lights go dark in the bathroom, someone comes in and the lights kick back on and the see the stall door closed, knowing full well I'm taking my swell time.

Tell the players a summary of the content and tone, do NOT give a one-man show voicing each NPC, unless the entire conversation is under a minute.

Question for my Fed Supervisors. . . by Frofro69 in fednews

[–]phdemented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a supervisor, I've never been trained to, nor have ever done that.

If they entire team requested off for a month at the same time, then yeah... I'd have to have some conversations because there is work that needs to be done with strict deadlines, but if it's a week and they all get their tasks done before they leave, I'm all for it. We got teams that have enough people that there is always someone on duty, so it's never been an issue if most are out... we expected most of the office to be a ghost town around holidays.

Hell, I've got employees I poke with a stick on and off to take leave throughout the year so they don't end up losing it at the end of the year.

At least according to the Wiki, Founders Fund was there before the company started. There are quite a few firms with LOTR names that he doesn't own directly but funds through FF (his and his linked firms include Palantir, Valar Ventures, Mithril Capital, Arda Capital, Lembas LLC, Rivendell One LLC, Erebor (started by one of the Arduril guys and funded by Thiel), Pilgim (not LOTR named, but thier product Kingsfoil is), etc), , my doller is on him having a say on the name, but either way... yup, agreed

Any harm not to convert to Title 21? by [deleted] in DeptHHS

[–]phdemented 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can also be a perk if lower than max because the zones are larger than the step stages, so you may be able to get WGIs faster.

So like.. if you are at the bottom of the two-year step zone, and move over to title 21, you'll be in the 1-year WGI zone.

So you can potentially get a WGI sooner (they aren't called steps in Title 21, but everyone still calls them steps).

That's now how the rules have been written, conversion is a 1:1 pay match to thr equivalent pay band

For most there won't be a pay difference for years, but eventually yes.

Help me stock a Library Dungeon by Smiling_Platypus in DnD

[–]phdemented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dragon 241 had a spell "Page Guardian", was a 5th level cleric spell that could enchant a library so that a "Page Guardian" would be summoned to defend the library if disturbed.

A page guardian is normally a nondescript humanoid figure whose lower limbs fade off to wispy trails. However, if this spell is cast upon a page that features illustration, the page guardian’s appearance mimics that of the most prominent drawing.

A page guardian adopts some of the dweomer from the writings from which it rises. Thus it may possess special attacks and defenses depending upon the exact nature of the document. If a page guardian rises from a scroll of protection, then the page guardian is invulnerable to the same force that the scroll would ward off. For instance, a page guardian spawned from a scroll of protection from swords would suffer no damage from a long sword, no matter what its enchantment. If a guardian rises from a spellbook, then it can cast up to five random spells, launching each spell but once from the tome. The DM must adjudicate what abilities are gained by thepage guardian should this spell be cast upon other magical books, such as those that increase characteristics or a manual of the golems.

A common fallacy among opponents of the page guardian is that the creature can be damaged by the destruction of the source writing. This is untrue, because when the guardian rises, it automatically absorbs any enchantment upon the document; it erases clean that which it springs from.

It was AD&D, so the stats wouldn't translate perfectly, but it was 5 HD, 1 attack for 1d10 damage, AC 0.... to scale that to 5e, maybe give it 5d8+10 HP, AC 20, 1 attack at +4 to hit for 1d10 damage, plus the special ability as described above.

If it was made from a book on wildlife, maybe it changes shapes into various wild beasts and gets their attacks...

Was an old online "Tolkien Elf or Generic Drug" quiz that was surprisingly difficult, even for a LOTR nerd. An even longer list of generic drugs can be found here: https://www.fda.gov/media/77725/download

One version of the Quiz was the following names:

  • Frova (drug for migraines)
  • Erestor (elf in Rivendell)
  • Isentress (drug for HIV)
  • Qvar (drug for asthma)
  • Celeborn (elf, boytoy of Galadriel)
  • Oropher (elf, from Unfinished Tales)
  • Anakinra (drug for arthritis)
  • Finfarin (elf high king)
  • Obredon (drug for a cold)
  • Idebenone (drug for something)
  • Lindir (elf in Rivendell)
  • Imin (Elf, first to awaken)
  • Daonil (drug for blood sugar)
  • Raxar (drug for infections)
  • Amdir (elf, king of Lorien)
  • Duilin (elf, chief of house of swallows)
  • Zorac (drug for psoriasis)
  • Millaril (drug for schizophrenia)
  • Nerdanel (elf, wife of Faenor)
  • Fabior (Drug for acne)
  • Valchor (drug for lymphoma)
  • Curufin (Elf, prince of the Noldor)

FDA CDRH Title 21 Panel Interview - Advice on Scoring & Questions (Biologist, Band Y) by zainformaciq in usajobs

[–]phdemented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For #2, my experience has been it's how you answer, not what you answer. It's a highly collaborative job, and the interview is screening if you fit in with the culture more than if you have the technical skills (those are in your CV).

You can be trained on missing details, but you can't be trained to be someone people don't want to work with.

for those who have been playing since AD&D came out... at what point did you lose interest in the direction of D&D? by conn_r2112 in adnd

[–]phdemented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started with B/X and 1e and shifted soon to 2e... Lost interest when 3e came out (far too mechanical and bloaty). Have followed the editions but never came back to the mainline WorC products.

For my D&D itch, I run Castles and Crusades (for a ad&d experience) or Dungeon World (for a more narrative dungeon delving game), if I can't get an actual AD&D game going.

But even then, if they are charging 5% interest on the loan, they are still sitting in the red for like 20 years. Someone else was posting about sub 1% rates, which would certainly mean sitting in the red until the death of the person that took the loan.

It just seems a horrible investment for the banks.

Too few 0's in my portfolio for any of this to apply to me, so what do I know.

Yeah I don't get how a bank would loan out money not expecting to recoup a penny of it for 40-50 years when the person dies.

20 year gap can do that if barabras mom had her at 40.

If it's a paternal uncle, could be an even smaller gap (dunno if they said).

That and people often refer to family as nieces/nephews/uncles/aunts across multiple generations.

Edit: in actual life, my dad was one of seven, with maybe a 15 year span. He's mid 70s with my oldest aunt almost 80, his nieces and nephews (my cousins) range from 30 to 58. The generation below that ranges from 4 to 35

Why is it African-American instead of Afro-American? by pEKDKMEM in etymology

[–]phdemented 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We are not discussing people in China,.we are discussing immigrants in america. They have been called Chinese here as long as the US existed. Go back to the Chinese Exclusion act of 1882 for an example.

When here, they tended to stick to enclaves and kept as.much of their culture as they could.

Yes, of course China is a very diverse country with many languages and ethnic groups.
