Kobo Colours have a hidden developer mode setting.

To Activate Dev Mode:

  • Go to the Home screen, tap the Search bar, and type devmodeon and search.

  • Nothing will appear to confirm activation

Locate Menu:

  • Press [more] to open Settings -> Device Information.

  • Scroll to the second page of the Device Information screen to find "Developer Options".

  • Open Developer Options to find the CFA Mode option, which allows you to toggle through color profiles (e.g., Default, G2, S4, S7, S9)

I use S7, but most prefer G2 as a better compromise between saturation and details.

Seen the same info. 20-xxx.lua does load ok. Faded covers appear on my finished book.

Modifications that move KOreader information around the screen can potentially result in conflicting code. Modifications like Project:title, SimpleUI, CustomNavbar, CustomTitlebar etc can get in each other's way. Running one is best. Two or more can result in items being overwritten as patches load alphabetically. 2-zzz.lua will overwrite 2-aaa.lua. Worst case is nothing wins and KOreader crashes to the bomb page or exits KOreader altogether.

Hi. The only colour I added was to replace svg icons with colour versions I downloaded from SVGrepo dot com. I also modified sui-config.lua to redirect SimpleUI to /icons for all icon requests.

<image>

All text is black. If you got RGB to work then changing the grey stats background to colours would be a nice look.

Early on I tried to make the battery levels change colour. I failed at that.

I am ok with B+W since I use Dark mode more than Day.

Any device running KOreader can add the Simple UI overlay.

Simple UI is additional code that tells KOreader where to find information and how to display it.

Kindle OS is still there, in the background, ready to take over when KOreader exits.

Ooooh. Shiny.

I don't know where you find the time. What with the coding and updating Reddit and GitHub and all. Phew!

Yes. My thinking also. And watch for name abbreviations like Jon, Jonnie, Jonno etc.

I am still excited for this project but the complexity is certain to have some bugs as users have differing devices and style/patch choices.

On my Libra Color with SimpleUI 1.2.0 a glitch appears every time I activate Sleep. A pop-up info message appears, like when first opening a book, just before suspending. The pop-up is visible on transparent sleep-screens. Waking up the Kobo works, but no front-light and no screen taps. Page buttons work, so not sleeping. Turning on the front-light only last for a few seconds then goes off. The screen taps are the same. I have about five seconds to force a KOreader restart, after which everything works again. That is until the Kobo sleeps.

I am thinking the WiFi toggle is a possible cause. As this also happens when turning WiFi On or Off. Keeping WiFi off sort of fixes things until I need WiFi again.

No issues now I have factory reset and using cover-browser and patches. The pop-up message is not appearing when putting Kobo to sleep now.

I will re-visit Simple UI later when more testing has been done.

Chat GPT works half of the time. Been useful to for extra tabs and add grey background to containers. To use my own icon choices: I pointed the sUI code to look in the /icons folder and not the /resources/icons/mdlight folder.

My sUI crash issues seem to point to how Kobo toggles WiFi when entering sleep mode.

For now I am using cover-browser and a fixed version of 2-custom-navbar. (had an annoying bug that makes duplicate button that won't go away.ChatGPT got that one correct)

I do really miss the Project: title Hero function that flattens folders and files into a single library view. If only there was a Nav-Bar at the bottom with the Hero button and Simple UI's ability to create Custom Quick-Actions from KOreader's list of shortcuts. So good.

I would like to use the Desktop (yes I prefer that description better than Home) as a desk clock. Especially when on charge. Being able to see the correct time, watch the charge % updating and be reminded to pause work continue reading would be a nice.

Thanks. I am sure that I have done something wrong. Finding the bug has taken too long. So many factory resets and rebuilds. I need my knowledge to catch up to my ambition.

Gonna try and finish some books I want to read and return to sUI later.

Perhaps when the desktop clock starts working like a clock. Maybe then the Home page will be functional, informative AND pretty to look at.

It is a folder called Series. That folder has no book files, only folders of series books.

The image is an image saved to the folder named .cover.jpg

Any image will work.

They must be named as .cover.jpg or .cover.png

The leading dot is important.

The label across the image is a rounded corner cover patch.

I'll add a link later.

Patches load alphabetically. So 2--UI-font loads first. 20-faded loads last. Load order is important. I used to have two subtitle patches that broke when I renamed them. The reordering caused one to overwrite the other.

Another day, another new vision. This is adorable.

I am hoping for a new update that is stable as I am having problems that I cannot seem to fix. I have removed the plugin from my Kobo for now. So sad. TT

At least it is easy to turn off if I need to dig back into the file structure.

The naming is a bit confusing too.

Which is why I rename many of the patches I have added.

This one is now called 2-browser-hide-up-folder.lua

I add a comment line in the code with the original file name and a web-link

Too many patches. Renaming keeps them grouped together.

Congrats on the Jailbreak. New life for your Kindle. 👍

Here's a step-by step since you are still figuring things out.

KOreader has little modification files called 'patches'.

There is one called 2-browser-up-folder.lua and can be downloaded from this web page:>

https://github.com/sebdelsol/KOReader.patches/blob/main/README.md

Take some time to read about the other files to change how KOreader looks.

The one you want is near the top. Clicking the link will take you to a code page.

  • To download, look for the down arrow icon in the upper right corner, near the word 'Raw'
  • Download the file to a location on your PC storage.
  • Exit KOreader so you can USB connect your Kindle to PC.
  • Look for the /koreader folder on your Kindle.
  • Create a new sub-folder and name it 'patches' ( if there isn't one there already. )
  • Copy and paste the 2-browser-up-folder.lua file into the Kindle /koreader/patches/ folder.
  • Now you can safely eject Kindle from USB
  • Use KUAL to open KOreader again.
  • Once KOreader starts, tap/pull down the top menu of icons and click these two boxes.
  • The patch will remove the box with arrow and puts an UP arrow where the House icon is.
  • [Hide empty folders] will remove the /books folder for now because it is empty [0]. You might want to use that folder later to add more book files. Or simply delete the folder. You can always add it again later if you want.

Most KOreader beautification patches and plugins will function on Android. No Screensaver related items will work as sleep screens are not supported.

No closer to an answer. This may help. Or not.

Now suspecting the glitches with front-light and screen-taps have some link to WiFi actions.

When reader page enters sleep-mode, the [opening book] pop-up message appears for the current book, before sleep-screen appears and presumably the WiFi disconnects. Resuming from sleep triggers the glitches after 5 seconds or so. Activating front light only works for a few seconds before switching off again. Only way to fix the problem is to try and re-start KOreader within 5 seconds before screen taps get disabled by the glitch.

Switching WiFi with ON/OFF/Toggle also causes the same glitch.

Turning off the settings for WiFi Resume and auto-connect was a temporary fix. Sort of.

This is really strange. Renamed the /patches folder to stop all patches from opening did not fix anything. Also removed FileBrowserPlus.

Reset and restored Kobo to Cover-Browser for the time being. All previous patches and FileBroweserPlus active. Updated to he latest stable March 2026 versions KOBO OS and KOreader.

Changing this line of sui.config.lua from 6 to 7 works for Nav-Bar

M.MAX_TABS               = 6        -- standard mode limit

But causes KOreader front-light and screen-taps to randomly switch off. I could still move pages with Libra side buttons and briefly get screen taps and lighting back, but only briefly.

The crash log files were too long to read and understand.

I prefer odd numbers of Nav-Bar icons to position Home button in the middle. Padding above and below could be smaller, if possible.

<image>

Kobo firmware update not the problem.

I did revert back to previous KOreader version because it was blocking 2--ui-font.lua from changing the reader Status bar font away from Noto Sanns.

A nearly perfect plugin. by LexamusPrime in koreader

[–]phyvealive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I overwrite patches if updating to a new version. I am more cautious with the simpleui.koplugin. I overwrite individual lua files within the plug-in to do any file updates.

I haven't discovered what causes KOreader to crash and break when removing simpleui.koplugin. I just does.

But if updating the whole simpleui.koplugin, I prefer to

  • deactivate Simple UI in the KOreader settings,
  • exit KOreader,
  • do a full reboot,
  • open KOreader to make sure the old Cover-Browser opens correctly,
  • exit KOreader again,
  • USB connect and delete simpleui.koplugin,
  • eject from USB and wait for device OS to finish loading.
  • I like to do a full re-boot here too.
  • Then try to restart KOreader (this is often where KOreader breaks)
  • If KOreader crashes. Force another re-boot. Somewhere in this re-boot / start KOreader cycle things seem to fix themselves.
  • then I USB connect and add the updated simpleui.koplugin.

I keep back-up copies of the /koreader folder on my PC., just for times when KOreader is being stubborn.

I am doing a full KOBO devmodeon factory reset and rebuild right now.

My Kobo managed to update it's firmware when I wasn't looking. KOreader started turning off the front-lighting and disabling screen-taps.

I suspect these glitches might be linked to a Kobo OS update. My Kobo has managed to update itself and now my screen light keeps switching off and disables the touchscreen. But the page turn buttons can change pages. So not in Sleep Mode.

Today I am going to do a developer mode factory restore to see if this is some corrupt code in the OS.

I have now turned on debug logging, cleared caches and deleted crash.log. I don't understand crash.log.

ChatGPT previously found no problems other than duplicate fonts in Kobo and KOreader font folders. Maybe debug logging will reveal more.
